I don't think the history of other dudes' successes and failures teaches you anything. Especially because you can't run a counterfactual on a given player.

I was being somewhat facetious...seemed like people thought Keiser and Thomas' experience would dictate Reynolds should reconsider coming out early, but I don't think that's what those two examples taken together actually show.

I think Reynolds probably won't be picked until the later rounds. Maybe he thinks that, maybe he doesn't, but if he thinks he's ready, does that really matter? And would Reynolds be picked any higher a year later? Not so sure...

I think Yankey is gone but the rest are staying if they know what's good for them.  Reynolds has not been as good a center fielder this year as he was last year, nor has he been as good a run-stopper.  Those are the top two jobs of an NFL safety, and I don't think he's shown that he's ready.  I actually think Richards is the more NFL ready of the two.

I think what happened to Chase Thomas have an affect on the decisions of some of our players.  It was pretty shocking when he didn't get drafted.  He was the leader of our defense and an All Pac-12 player.

Perhaps the better example was Thomas Keiser, who declared for the NFL after his junior year, when many people thought he would be better off staying put a year [to be fair to him, he wasn't a perfect fit when we switched to a 3-4 defense].  He went undrafted, but then was signed as an undrafted free agent, and has stuck around the league; I think he's on the Chargers roster now.

Keiser left after his senior year. He had one year of eligibility left but he did graduate.

What effect will it have? I'm not sure what lesson people are supposed to draw from that.

Just that there is no guarantee that you will have a career in the NFL, even if you are a star in college.  So, if you are a good college player you should use all of your eligibility before entering the NFL draft.  If you are an Andrew Luck, you must weigh the risks of injury in returning to college.  I'll bet that Gaffney would tell them to stay in school as long as possible.

DAT is going drafting: http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=209360406

Re: Early entries into the NFL draft - BostonCard - 01-05-2014

Now that his college career is over, is it fair to say that DAT's career was a disappointment compared to the (over)hype? Not that I'm not glad he's gone, but there seemed to be a large gap between potential and achievement, perhaps because of injury when he was to be the featured back.

Re: Early entries into the NFL draft - washingtonismoney - 01-05-2014

Many Irish fans felt that Tuitt might surprise, so his leaving is a pleasantly unwelcome surprise. Don't think they have much depth on the defensive line.

His yards per carry and total receiving yards went down each year, and he never broke out as a game-breaking receiver or game-breaking running back (though he was and remains a game-breaking returner). I think it's the fact that he was only a bit-part player at two positions contributes to that impression of not living up to the hype. Plus as Stanford fans, we've seen him fail to be much of an influence in two key Oregon losses in the last two years.

Re: Early entries into the NFL draft - FarmBoy - 01-06-2014

What position will DAT play in the NFL? He's a dangerous weapon in college, but I'm not sure what he'll do in the NFL where his speed is not as dangerous and his small stature a bigger liability.

Do they still play Arena Football?  If so, dat's where DAT belongs.
