Quote:Thanks, that is appreciated advice.  I just found this somewhat intimidating sentence on Wikipedia regarding game play.

Yeah, it's that kind of thing that can be really intimidating when you hear all of the rules up front. But if you just sit down and play a game with some folks who know, it all clicks. It's kind of like football. All of the arcane rules seem arbitrary, but when you know them and see how they fit together, there's a method to the madness.

In theory, you can play without the robber token at all for your first game and introduce it after you've gotten comfortable with the basic flow. But then you won't having anything to do when a '7' is rolled...

I think you can also play the game online and that will teach you the basics.

Settlers is indeed really easy to learn if you play with someone who knows how it works, but be warned, if you don't like the kinds of games where people can capriciously screw each other over, you might not like this one too much.

Game night. My house. (Seattle.) Any night. Any game. (Yes, I'm a bit over the top. I own a few hundred.) I love Settlers of Catan.

This is quickly becoming the nerdiest thread on a Stanford sports message board, which probably puts it in the running for nerdiest thread on the internet.

Anyways Settlers is a great game, and actually not that complicated once you've played it a couple times. Seems to be a gateway drug to the true depths of nerddom. My personal favorite nerdy boardgame is the game Junta, in which the various players each play as various high ranking members of a fictitious banana republic, trying to backstab, murder, and coup their way to winning, which is by appropriating the most foreign aid money. I imagine Garvin would be a natural.

I just added Junta to my Amazon cart.

Re: Grantland on Andrew - magnus - 01-07-2014

If you are learning Settlers, it's not enough to have players who know how to play.  Make sure they actually will teach you (instead of feeding on your new blood).  Nothing ruins a game faster than having experienced players dominate your first few plays.  Also, once you get the hang of it, the best experience (most checks and balances) is with the 4 player version (not including the expansions)

That said, my fave is Race for the Galaxy (and the first few expansions).  Hard as heck to learn, but once you _really_ learn it (10-20 games later), it's faster and more fulfilling (IMO) than Settlers.  Definitely, make sure you first play with an experienced player that is willing to handhold you.  The other benefit of RftG over Settlers is that you can play with just 2 players.

Robbie, do you have Titicaca? (don't add that to your cart, but just testing the bounds of Robbie's collection. =))

That's a good one too...also plays well w/2 players, and can be _very_ fast...if you have an automatic shuffler.  Otherwise...I hope you like shuffling. =)
