Andrus Peat good at football. (https://twitter.com/StanfordRivals/status/439833934696706049)

(oh, apparently Shuler too.)

Re: Spring practice thread - yvonne - 03-01-2014

I like your explanation better than Andy's.

Re: Spring practice thread - 2 for 2028 - 03-01-2014

Does anyone have any further insight on Alex Carter's plans for next year?  According to Lombardi he is at practice, but not in uniform.

Re: Spring practice thread - terry - 03-01-2014

Carter reportedly has an injury.

Re: Spring practice thread - ChicagoCard - 03-01-2014

Kodi Whitfield is wearing jersey number 5. Lloyd must have had to change numbers too...

Not yet. Lloyd is still wearing #2, as is Lyons.

Lyons at nickel... - ChicagoCard - 03-01-2014

Anybody surprised by this...

Quote:We’ve tried Wayne Lyons inside at nickel and he’s been really, really good so Wayne probably has the edge at nickel.

That comes from near the end, here.

ESPN has some more info on it here:  http://espn.go.com/blog/stanford-football/post/_/id/10082/observations-from-stanfords-open-practice

Not too surprising, although I would guess it'll actually depend on what receivers are in the slot vs out wide in multi receiver sets (as in, Wayne is gonna line up against whoever is better).

Re: Spring practice thread - OutsiderFan - 03-02-2014

I really like Lyons at nickel, and it does seem Carter being out is a good thing in terms of letting other guys like Harris and T. Thomas, and Pippens get reps.  Sounds like Olugbodode has a leg-up in the FS competition.  Will be interesting to see how fast Whitfield and Lloyd progress.

A little surprised to read Palma isn't in the mix to take Skov's ILB spot, but good to see Noor Davis is.

If the OL is already set, this shapes up to be potentially the most talented one in Stanford history.  Whether it performs the best as a unit remains to be seen, but you have to think Hogan is going to enjoy some amazing protection in 2014.

+1 on Lyons.  espn's blog projected that Lyons would be used similarly to MT3 a few years ago with Lyons as CB in base package and then nickel back with that package.  with Lyons there and Hemschoot and Tarpley, it seems like we will may have an overall better size/speed package than last year.  production on-field will of course be TBD.

+1 on oline.  sounds like RG will be the iffy spot.  our OTs should be very good.

Based on the reps at practice, I would have guessed that Palma is ahead of Davis. Palma and Hemschoot seemed to get the most reps with the second team.

With Carter on the sideline, Lyons and Harris were starters in the base defense at yesterday's practice. In the nickel, Lyons moved inside and Pippens came in at CB.

Brendon Austin has been moved from tackle to guard. He was playing RG with the second team yesterday. It looks like Austin will get a shot at competing with Caspers for the RG job.

Re: Spring practice thread - rudruff - 03-03-2014

I can't decide whether I am happy/sad about the OLine being set at this point. I am happy that they are apparently going to have the whole spring to gel, but we have had some real battles for starting positions that resulted in great OLines the last couple of years.

I think the staff moved Austin to RG so that he can compete with Caspers. It's up to him to make it a battle.

what happens if Peat or Murphy get hurt? - donkey687 - 03-04-2014

With Austin moving to guard, we have no depth at tackle (i.e. not a single guy who played a down before, I believe).  The staff must be confident in our true freshman Bright and Oser to move Austin to guard.

Also have Davidson at Tackle who has not seen any action but is a year ahead of Bright and Oser and was a 4* recruit

Re: Spring practice thread - FGkickingiswinning - 03-04-2014

Oser is a C/G

Davidson is a loooong way from seeing the field.

The back up at OT if there was an injury would either be Austin, Bright or Tucker. No issues there.

I really wouldn't make too much of the depth chart on paper. As the situation with Hemschoot bouncing back and forth between inside and outside LB has shown us, these things can be pretty fluid. Yankey moved back and forth as well. I'm sure. If there was a real need for Austin to move back to tackle, and the coaches really thought he was the best option, it would be done with the proverbial sroke of a pen.

Yep. Right now, Austin probably is still the #1 reserve at tackle, in addition to competing for the RG spot. If Austin wins the RG spot, I would anticipate that he would continue to be the #1 reserve at tackle, sliding out to play tackle if needed, with Caspers moving in at RG.

That could change in the fall if someone else emerges at tackle (Bright, Tucker, etc.)
