Leftcoast nailed it.  If you asked the average UC sports fan, they would tell you that it should be called the Sporting Red not Green.  If you asked the average LSJU sports fan, they would tell you that the Chronicle has a bias against private schools.

The truth is the paper doesn't give a rats ... about college sports.  Neither school receives the attention the respective fan bases believe is appropriate. This is a pro sports dominated area.  The Niners/Raiders/ A's/Giants/Warriors will always control the sports discussion.

This is not the mid-20th Century.  Those days are long gone.  Besides who cares?  If you are doing well, you don't need the Chronicle to tell you and if you are doing poorly, you probably like the idea of being ignored.

1.  If beat writers aren't going to ask the "uncomfortable" question - e.g., why was the offensive game plan against Michigan State in the Rose Bowl so bad/ineffective - then who is?  I commend that, frankly, because it would be much easier just to play nice and ask the useless question:  "How good would you say that Michigan State defense is?"  Hand me the Sears Cup, I think I'm going to . . .

2.  Redrum is right that Stanford is nobody's child (and I doubt personal admissions experience - if any - has anything to do with it).  And FTR, admissions to Cal or Stanford is only for the elite of the elite; thus, if there is any "resentment" among locals, that will be more and more directed at both institutions.

3.  71Bear is also right that this is a pro sports market, to the extend those living in Greater Bay Area give a rat's a$$ about sports generally.

I think Stanford's recent football success is helping build more support locally. We know that ticket sales and attendance are up. Also, I have some anecdotal impressions about the level of local support, FWIW:

- It's easier for me to find casual fans to use my extra tickets.

- I feel that I see more Stanford gear (hats, shirts, etc.) at the grocery store, the hardware store, the coffee shop, the airport, and other public places in my part of the South Bay.

- I also feel that I see more Stanford gear when I travel to the east or abroad. I'm curious whether others have had the same impression.
