Skov, the Barelys and the Recency Phenomenon - Redrum - 05-11-2014
For those of you without decades of historical perspective, the Skov/ draft thread is nothing out of the norm for Bear Inside. Out toward the edge of the bell curve, but nothing we haven't seen over a long period of time. Churchill famously said of the Germans (he called them The Hun) "They're either at your throat or at your feet." K.al fans of sort of like that. They're either toasting their sweet selfness, or whining like hungry puppies. Which is sort of how we were not too long ago.
But I think Skov is just a lightning rod for years of worsening football and broken dreams. And Big Game finished off a
terrible , awful, dreadful season. So when Skov put QB Goff out late in the game, that became the thing they fetishize. They'be be fetishizing their awesome defensive fierceness if the roles were reversed. As it is, they sort of remember the bad line play. They sort of remember a running game that wasn't. They sort of remember just how bad and what direction Kal football was headed in Tedford's last season. But they really DO remember Skov's hit. It's less painful to focus on that than a bigger picture which isn't too encouraging.Â

In fairness, all sports boards are about "toasting [fans' teams'] sweet selfness."
However, I've never encountered the kind of vitriol and preoccupation with the rival as on the 59er boards. Ann Killion wrote a column last year, which I was unable to uncover in a search just now, basically asking whether Kal fans were more upset about their not having gone to the Rose Bowl since 1959 or with Stanford's 2013 victory. I'd guess it's the latter. Think about it. Their proudest sports moment isn't a championship, but a fluke "victory" in which referees were cowed by the crowd into not throwing a flag. They celebrate it not because it demonstrates how good their team was, but rather that it was against us.
Sure, SEC rivalries like the Iron Bowl may garner bigger crowds and year-round grudges, but at least the teams have something to celebrate that's unrelated to the rival.
Very well put, Yvonne - Redrum - 05-11-2014
and I love the book find.

The extremity of the hatred of Skov by UCB faithful has to be related to his role in Stanford's turnaround. That one hit on Goff was bad, but on it's own is pretty minor considering it didn't impact the game outcome, the season, or Goff's long term health (at least based on his return to Spring Ball. Skov was one of the highest profile recruits to Stanford just as UCB was fading, he was a significant player on 4 of the 5 teams during the 2009-2013 seasons. If any one player is emblematic of Stanford's rise and image as a hard-nosed, defense minded football program, it's Skov.
Are the 49ers a good choice for Skov? My impression was that they had a strong LB corp. I would think he would sign on to a team that was relatively weak at the position. I hope he gets healthy and proves the league wrong.

Does it matter whether he was drafted or an UDFA? Doug Baldwin's ring is identical to Richard Sherman's.
His paycheck isn't. (Even before the extension.)

I don't know for sure, but I would bet the average paycheck of a 6th/7th rounder and a UDFA is basically the same, and I would bet the chances of actually making a roster are pretty similar, too.

In fairness, I'd hate any Suthunkahl linebacker who looked like a Road Warrior extra.
Bares look at this guy and they probably see what I saw when I saw this guy...
I'd like to think that after every Skov tackle over the last few years, our opponents fans all yelled "Skov!" in the same way that Kirk yelled "Khan!"
Re: Skov -

Skov is a lightning rod kinda player. On your team, you love 'em. On your rival's team, you hate 'em. There have been a number of those guys on both sides of the rivalry over the years. No big deal. It's what sports are all about. Quite frankly, now that he is on "my" team, I love the guy. Go Niners!Â
Re: Skov -
FarmBoy - 05-11-2014
Hopefully he really will be on "your team." There's a long road between now and making the final team cut. To repeat my earlier question, does anyone have a sense for his chances, given the 49ers strength at LB?
Re: Skov -

As long as Navorro Bowman is out recovering from his knee injury on the fumble recovery that wasn't, Michael Wilhoite, himself a UFA from Washburn, is the presumed starter opposite Patrick Willis at ILB.
Skov very well could have seen this and felt he could potentially earn a starting job for the 49ers as a rookie UFA. But even if he can't beat out Wilhoite, if he beats out Chris Borland, he could see some PT, and not just on special teams.Â
I'm convinced Skov's odds of making an NFL roster are greater than any other UFA in his class.
Well, fingers crossed - Redrum - 05-11-2014
The injury that led to a disastrous NFL timing tryout might still be bothering him and rookie camp ain't that far away. If he gets the rep as damaged goods or frail, could start a bad spiral. Here's hoping the 49er training staff is as good, resourceful and patient as Turley's bunch. If they are into big max-weight tests of manhood, Skov could re-tweak and never really be at top ability during a crucial time.
Re: Skov -
OutsiderFan - 05-11-2014
The Niners have a well-earned reputation for taking on injured guys and being patient with them as they regain full health. Harbaugh knows what Skov can do when healthy, and now the pressure is off him to perform, so he can rehab and get healthy before getting on the field.
Question begging answer:
Would Skov have been drafted if he didn't workout at the Stanford pro day, rather than working out at less than 100% and turning in very disappointing results?

It's been a while, and I'm too lazy too look it up, but I seem to recall a report that claimed it was preferable to be a free agent rather than a late round pick. The late round picks are drafted after real needs are met, but free agents have their choice of any NFL team (if they are marketing themselves correctly) and can position themselves into better situations than a 7th round pick. That thought crossed my mind as I reviewed the 49er selections. The 7th rounders came to a team with 53 roster players, a practice squad and 9 selections in front of them. Their odds? Not too good.

The paid discussion area on Rivals has some insight on Skov's situation that you aren't going to get anywhere else.

Yow! I think from the guaranteed money that's been handed out, the 49ers really like Skov. I would be very happy with such a "consolation prize."

I also have strong reason to believe the numbers are accurate.

Really? $10K guaranteed isn't a whole lot more than a lot of his Mgmt Science classmates will be getting from their employers. That's not a whole lot of money to the 49ers. I don't think this bit of news increases my expectations of Skov making the 53-man roster, or the practice squad for that matter.
Re: Skov -
yvonne - 05-15-2014
I think the fact that he's getting the highest of any UDFA is what looks good to me, and yes, I was reacting more to the $420,000 than the $10,000. I'm pretty sure the $420,00 (hmm) is better than some late round rookie contracts. I could be smoking something, though.
Re: Skov -
FarmBoy - 05-15-2014
But the $420K is not guaranteed. Only if he makes the roster.
Re: Skov -
AtlantaBadger - 05-15-2014
I don't claim to be the expert on this, but have looked into the issue a bit.
The only thing Shayne is getting for sure is the $10K -- $420,000 is the rookie minimum IF HE MAKES THE TEAM. This will be a bit of an over-simplification, but basically anyone drafted in the 4th round or later will technically make the rookie minimum in his first year, and the base salary escalates each of the 4 years of the contract (to $675,000 in year 4). The big difference between someone picked, say, with the first pick in the 4th round and the first pick in the 5th round and the 6th round is the amount of signing bonus and the overall amount of guaranteed money in the contract. The guaranteed amounts are quite high for first rounders, obviously, though pick 2 makes less than pick 1, and pick 7 makes less than pick 6, etc.  Once you get past the second round, the guaranteed numbers and signing bonuses start to drop precipitously.
Further, each team has a set limit on the total amount it can spend on UDFA contracts -- this year it is roughly $80,000. That is the same for every team. I think $10,000 is a pretty good number for Shayne in that light; many UDFAs get less than that.Â
A free agent has to make the squad really to get anything more (practice squad players do make a couple thousand a week during the season).

FWIW Ben Gardner just signed a 4 year/2.279MM contract, w/ a 59k signing bonus:
