The Pac-16 Mega Conference - Mick - 05-19-2014

(05-19-2014, 08:30 AM)Stymie link Wrote:Reasonable vision, Mike, but I see something more like 4 megaconferences of 16-teams.  Top 4 in each by W-L (with agree to tie-breaker) plus next 4 (by poll--give Condi et. al. something to do rather than save the world) get into 8-team playoffs (starting Jan 1).  Rest of the losers play in the other bowls.  Next year some sort of re-alignment that gives the Boise States/Northern Illinois of the world a chance to get into the megaconferences next year.  Something like European/Ypremian ""I keek a touchdown" "foot ball.""

So Stymie, in your 16-team mega conference vision of the future, which four teams get added to the Pac-12?

Where do the additional 4 teams come from? - Redrum - 05-19-2014

I'll let the back East conferences settle their own problems under this 64-team/ 4 conference system.
Does this mean we replay the situation from not long ago when the Pac12 was formed and Big 12 was on the menu?  Only this time the Stalin/Hitler-like scenario of dividing up the Big 12 between three neighboring conferences?

Texas/ Texas Tech/ Oklahoma/  (wildcard!) BYU  to P12  [lots of reasons why absorbing UT would be like eating a spikey bowling ball for P12, but  UT would have 2 choices: SEC or P12.  If Texas goes rogue, or joins SEC  (if only to restore rivalry w/ Texas A&M)  Then the P12 choices look a little less epic.

Well, this was fun exercise.  But it's a reason to think the 4 conference/64 team thing might not happen, if only because it's hard to see Texas swallowing its pride and joining either P12 or SEC. Just not in their genetic makeup to not be the Big Dawg.  Actually, there's resistance in other regions, too.  But megabucks talk and bull**** walks so maybe it will happen.

Don't think Boise St. fits the standards for P12.  They've been punching above their weight for the Petersen years, but they don't fit athletically or academically with the P12... and Petersen is now in Seattle.

If any one balks, expand here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_University_of_Baja_California and get Skov to coach if the other thing doesn't pan out?

They actually have a campus in Rosarito.  I spent quite a bit of time in the 80s and 90s in Rosarito at Papas & Beer.  That was the Memorial Day Weekend destination for my buddies and I for several years running.  After that, we graduated to Puerto Vallarta for a few years.  Too bad Mexico is now a killing field.

I'd be unlikely to ever go to a Pac-12 championship game that did not involve Stanford even though I live about 8 miles from Levi's Stadium..

My selfish concerns as a season ticket holder with a neutral site game are will I get tickets and will they be comparable to my regular season tickets.  I'd also like good tailgating but given the Friday night time slot that's not as important as my arrival for kick-off won't allow much time for quality tailgating.

I'm hoping arguably the greatest Strauss, Leo, shows up for the ribbon-cutting or at least the first Pac-12 championship.
