To answer Hulk's question - Redrum - 08-29-2014

I think most of the (ahem)boarders I read felt that Mason would/will succeed.  My guess:  75% positive without any loud, distinct voices taking an emphatic negative view.  But that impression is filtered through my sieve of a memory.  The only negative thing I recall was his hire of Dorrell and whether he  a) still had the chops or b) ever really had the chops to be a topflight OC in the first place.

Given all the Negative Nellies that populate that board, that's pretty impressive.

Well how many people were actually making predictions about that? I mostly remember a lot of "good luck to him, thanks for the time here, don't steal our recruits." I can't remember anyone saying that he'd be better than Franklin, but my memory is also pretty awful so I can't be certain.

...without looking it up. Which we could do, and I'm sure someone will at some point.

Well, they aren't particularly negative about people who are no longer at Stanford. Those folks are all way better than anyone still on campus.

Good point. No matter how bad a guy is while he's playing at Stanford, he's still much better than those who come after him.

Well - Redrum - 08-29-2014

I didn't know that being more successful than Franklin was the standard.  I think it was viewed as a great opportunity for a career coach who wanted to be a HC and was ready to take his shot-- which is positive and I think implies people thought he had a good chance at success.

It's Vanderbilt and the SEC.  I wished him well but decided to avert my eyes.  I'm sure Daniel's well wishing friends did the same.  I'm sure some of those stadiums will feel like lion dens.

Still, the loss to Temple is unexpected.
