Brent Jones and Tom Tolbert had a remarkably candid conversation on the players' feelings regarding Jim Harbaugh this afternoon on KNBR w/respect to Harbaugh.  Long story short: great coach, relies too much on college stuff, can wear on a pro, some on team probably irritated with him, but that happens on all pro teams.  High energy coach who loves football, can and probably does wear out his welcome.

If that's your worry then it's too late. The Raiders just fired Dennis Allen so I'm sure the first "Raiders talking to David Shaw" will appear before our next game.

Re: 49ers coach - ca245 - 09-29-2014

Or the Niners could trade JH to the Raiders at the end of the season and the story line becomes again "Niners talking to David Shaw."

I don't think Shaw would go work for morally-absent 49ers management, and I'm not sure Harbaugh is going to stay either.

Was that something he seriously considered or was it a negotiation/leverage thing? I suppose only Harbaugh knows for sure but I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was the latter.

Re: 49ers coach - BostonCard - 09-29-2014

Yes, Harbaugh was almost out the door; I think Kansas had even started crafting the press release and making arrangements for the press conference.  So, he either totally played both Kansas and Stanford, or he was seriously considering it.

And in case you're not following what's happening in Ann Arbor...

My son was at the game. He and what few students at the game saw what happened and were shocked.

And of course, the Harbaugh-to-Michigan rumor mill is going strong: http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2014/9/29/6863277/brady-hoke-michigan-football-coaching-search-harbaugh-miles

The Skunkbears' Regents fire the AD first.  Then Hoke gets the poke.

Re: 49ers coach - Leftcoast - 09-30-2014

It's disappointing to hear rumors of the front office undermining their own coach.  The 49ers should move VERY carefully.  The bumbling losers role in the Bay Area is already nailed down by the Raiders and they don't need an understudy.  NFL fans had it pretty rough around here from 2003 until 2011.

Dennis Erickson (9-23)
2003 NFL NFC West 3rd 7 9 0
2004 NFL NFC West 4th 2 14 0

Mike Nolan (16-32)
2005 NFL NFC West 4th 4 12 0
2006 NFL NFC West 3rd 7 9 0
2007 NFL NFC West 3rd 5 11 0

Mike Singletary  (21-27)
2008 NFL NFC West 2nd 7 9 0
2009 NFL NFC West 2nd 8 8 0
2010 NFL NFC West 3rd 6 10 0

Jim Harbaugh  (36-11-1)
2011 NFL NFC West 1st 13 3 0  Conference Championship Appearance (Harbaugh COY)
2012 NFL NFC West 1st 11 4 1  Super Bowl Appearance
2013 NFL NFC West 2nd 12 4 0  Conference Championship Appearance

Harbaugh, 49ers, Michigan - Redrum - 09-30-2014

My guess is that Harbaugh's mercurial personality is the ruling force in his life.  It worked at Stanford because emotionalism works on young men.  It's less effective in the pro game for a variety of reasons,  the greatest being the developed immunity to emotionalism of  the players at that level.  Their egos are secure (even over-sized) society and their bank accounts tell them they are Gods.

I would hope that Harbaugh finds his place.  If his ego could handle it long enough for him to mature some more, I think a long run at a strong college would end up being the best place for him.  Probably his rocky relationship with the 49ers front office is the fulcrum that could decide this.  That, and a little failure on the field while Michigan simultaneously pleads ( through representatives, all very hush-hush) for JH to send some sort of sign he might be interested.

Her desire not to leave the area? No, no, no. The real lure for Harbaugh and his wife (Missouri Grad) for the KU job was their mutual love of the midwest. I think the Michigan job is very much in play...

I have not emotional attachment to Harbaugh. I won't care if he succeeds or fails. I'm eternally appreciative for the work he did turning around Stanford's program, but I don't have any reservations that he did it because he loved the school. He only wants to be the best at what he does.

My only hope is that Harbaugh doesn't land back in the NCAAs at a school that completes with Stanford on the field or for recruits and that the vacuum he leaves doesn't disrupt Stanford.

Farmboy was talking about Mrs. Shaw, who has definitely said that she wants to stay in the Bay Area. I dunno if Mrs. Harbaugh ever said anything similar.

Not sure I understand the reference to "morally absent".  Could you elaborate a bit?

Probably a reference to the handling of off the field issues for the 49er players.

Re: 49ers coach - CornFed - 09-30-2014

I get that.  Those issues (presumed Ray McDonald and Aldon Smith) exist.  I'm just not up to speed on 9ers moral deficiency in handling them.  I was surprised that McDonald has been playing, but I was unaware of 9er machinations to skirt their moral obligations.

Re: 49ers coach - washingtonismoney - 09-30-2014

I'm not sure the college/pro distinction really means much for Harbaugh. He hasn't exactly stuck around any place for long, and there's a lot of circumstantial evidence that his schtick was grating at Stanford towards the end of his tenure.

True.
And for that matter Harbaugh has been extremely effective at the Niners, at least through last year. He just seems to have a limited shelf life.

Re: 49ers coach - needle - 09-30-2014

I definitely haven't seen every snap of every 49ers game, but does any one else think Harbaugh is trying to rein himself in on the sideline a bit this year? That's my impression after watching most of the Dallas, Arizona and Philadelphia games.

Here's the obligatory Shaw says he has no interest in the Raiders job story.
