If I am reading that correctly, it would seem Stanford is the biggest favourite of the entire bowl lineup.

Afraid that probably says more about Maryland and the Big Ten than Stanford.

Stanford 31
The school formerly known as Maryland Agricultural College 17

Wow, Oregon by 9 seems like a generous line. Despite Oregon's performance this year, I just don't have a lot of faith in them. I think that FSu will find a way to get it done.

Really? FSU has repeatedly just barely squeaked past horrible teams. I think we could beat them if we played a good game. Plus GT's triple option gave them fits, and Oregon's offense is much better. If Oregon wins by four scores I won't be surprised.

None of the teams that FSU "just barely squeaked past" (which I will define as beating by less than 10 points) had a losing record this year. Which ones would you classify as "horrible"?

Re: Stanford vs Maryland prediction thread - FarmBoy - 12-09-2014

I'm aware of the close games FSU has had, but I actually think that will strengthen them as  team. Oregon hasn't been tested for over 2 months. Perhaps Oregon has stronger individual players, but FSU has a lot of experience dealing with adversity.

I'm actively hoping Oregon can pull it off, at least in the FSU match up. I'm not sure how I feel about them winning the championship.

I think that was a real advantage we had when our game with the Ducks went down to the wire in 2012. We were used to close games; they weren't.

It's pretty easy for teams in 8-game conferences, especially the ACC, to get to 6-6. Miami, BC, Florida, NC State (they won by 2 scores but it was close into the 4th), hell even ND isn't actually that good. Those are all teams that Oregon would utterly destroy this year. Barring one of those weird "we had 4 weeks to practice for this game" showings, I just don't see how FSU keeps it close.

Fine, but you still haven't told me which of those teams you would classify as "horrible".
Let me put it this way. If you are giving 3-4 TD's, I'm taking FSU.
As I'm sure you recall, Oregon destroyed some teams that we just squeaked by (or lost to) in 2012. Who won the game when we played them?

Well, first, I never actually said that I was giving them 4 TDs, I said that I wouldn't be surprised if Oregon won by 4 TDs, that's a pretty large difference. Second, NC State is horrible, the rest of them are merely pretty bad (OMG, HYPERBOLE, YOU GOT ME).

Also, I'm starting to think you just didn't read what I wrote. I said that barring some kind of craziness I don't see how FSU keeps it close. It's basically exactly the same as our game in 2012. If we play Oregon 10 times they win 7 or 8, and I don't think anyone here really doubts that. We played crazy well that game in a way that's not always reproducible. FSU could do that and pull off the upset, being a 9 point dog means you win 20-25% of the time. But by the same token, about as often as that the favorite wins big.

NC State was 7-5 this year. Does that make them horrible? Well, you tell me. Anyway, I would just be curious to know how many points you would be willing to give up and still take the Ducks.

Record in different conferences is wildly misleading (plus record is actually not a great indicator of team quality when you only play 12 games). F+ puts them just ahead of Navy in terms of quality. That's not a team that should be taking a top-4 school into the 4th quarter.

Anyway, why the hell does any of this matter to you? I think FSU isn't actually an elite team and that Oregon is, why do you care about that judgment?

Re: Stanford vs Maryland prediction thread - fullmetal - 12-10-2014

Hyperbole aside, NC State is truly mediocre, and if the Wolfpack can hang with FSU for a while, then Oregon should salt this one away early.  Boston College may not fit a conventional definition of "horrible," but they are not a good football team (losses to Pitt and CSU, among others)--BC is just not consistent.  BC was great this year, notably against U$C (the west coast one), but it didn't look like they held it together for as long as they should have.  A 17-13 loss to Clemson must have been agonizing, as well as their 17-20 loss to FSU.

I think FSU would have made an expanded CFB playoff field, but should not have been in the 4-team playoff field.  My personal definition of "elite" doesn't give up 41 pts to NC State or squeak by six teams (defined as less than a touchdown, 7pts, margin of victory).

Re: Stanford vs Maryland prediction thread - 81alum - 12-10-2014

I was going to say a 98-87 win, except Candice isn't on our team any more and we've been there and done that.  That plus our defense will probably be better in this bowl than it was in the 2008 regional finals.

That said, I predict:
Stanford 31
Maryland 14

Re: Stanford vs Maryland prediction thread - CornFed - 12-24-2014

I still feel like it's too early to submit a prediction for our bowl game.  Many unpredictable issues can arise at the last minute.  Nonetheless, I have been reading about Maryland quite a bit and feel we have a brobdingnagian advantage with our defense.  They seem a bit too reliant on the legs and arm of their QB, Brown and have really one effective receiver.  I don't predict a shutout lightly.  It's is pretty unusual for a team to accomplish that.  For one thing, in a bowl game if we get a hefty lead, I would think Shaw will start substituting liberally (at least I hope he does and that it is for that reason).  In addition, shutouts are rare because one untimely turnover can lead to the opponent scoring.

On offense, I am feeling like we, as a team, had an "ah-ha" moment during the last two (+) games.  Add to that Kevin Hogan's inspirational play against UCLA and the fact that we do, in fact, have something to prove in this game - even if it's not that we're the #1 team in the country.  I believe Shaw will be able to provide the context that enables players to find their individual motivations.
