Also, when a highly rated recruit is in demand, everyone says they are as good as Stanford academically.  ::)

Here's how this helps us  A resurgent Michigan program poses a recruiting threat to ND.

It does; unfortunately it also poses one to us. Harbaugh will be going after good students, and will have credibility telling them why they should choose Michigan over Stanford.

I don't think Harbaugh will be going after good students. I don't think he has any real interest in academics. I think he will be going after good football players, and I don't think he will have any academic preference at all. He'll take anyone the admissions department will let him take. He may even view academics as a drawback to the extent it distracts kids from football.

Re: Harbaugh in demand - BostonCard - 12-21-2014

After today I wonder if he still going to be in demand.  The Niners up by 21 at the half Couged it.

I have to agree with Terry.  I think he'll pay lip service to academics, but in the end, he'll (and I suspect get) every great football player he can recruit.

That game was beautiful.  The Chargers had to make a half a dozen or more plays down the stretch and they made them all.  Just do it again in Kansas City, and hope it's enough to get into the playoffs, and that we don't dig so deep a hole this time.

Re: Harbaugh in demand - OutsiderFan - 12-22-2014

And the Niners contributed all they could by calling three timeouts that stopped the clock in the second half, two to avoid delay of game penalties and one when Aldon Smith couldn't get off the field when injured inside of 2 minutes.

All told the Niners gave the Chargers an extra 1:20 of time.

Re: Harbaugh in demand - BostonCard - 12-22-2014

Hey Sam...
I too was very happy with the result (as well as results along the league), which left San Diego in a position to control their own destiny.  The game against Kansas City will not be easy, but it is nice to be in a position to win for a chance to make the playoffs (and play Andrew Luck and the Colts, most likely).  As for the game, despite the way it started and San Francisco's reputation on defense, for some reason, I always thought we had a chance, even with the niners up by 21 into the third quarter.  It just had that feel. (Of course, I also thought Luck and the Colts could come back from 28 down at the half, and well, that didn't come to pass).

I didn't watch the game, but if two timeouts were to avoid delay of game penalties, doesn't that mean those game SD almost no time? You don't call those unless there's <2 seconds left on the clock, so those ones give ~4s max. The other one might have saved them some time, but, again, depending on the circumstances it's probably not more than 30s. Do you want to give the other team any time? Obviously not, but from your description that doesn't actually sound like a real error.

Did you happen to see the spot with Bob Costas in which he disputed that the phase highlighted in your post has meaning since destiny is, by his definition, not controllable.  Probably true, but a good example of why he has become insufferable.

I saw that while out to dinner with my wife's family last night, we made fun of him for a while. Pretty dumb.

Re: Harbaugh in demand - BostonCard - 12-22-2014

San Francisco called its first time out with 6:30 left to play in the 3rd quarter and San Diego facing first and goal at the 5.  San Diego had been going no huddle, so it might have been necessary to change personnel, or to give the defense a breather.  At the time the 49ers were leading 28-7; the subsequent touchdown cut the lead to 28-14.  There was no way to know that the timeout would affect the game.

San Francisco called its second time out with 10:27 left in the game and first and 10 after an 11 yard Frank Gore run.  I believe this is the case where they were facing a possible delay of game.  For what it is worth, San Francisco failed to convert on that set of downs and punted from midfield; 5 yards probably wouldn't have made a difference, in retrospect.  But with 10:27 left in the game, and a 14 point lead, I don't think anyone was expecting the time out to be crucial.

San Francisco called its third time out for the injury with 1:43 left in the game.  I believe the time out is called by rule inside the two minute warning in an injury situation.  But even if they hadn't had to call a time out, the clock would have been stopped for the injury.

In all, I don't think the time outs would have been material.  The bigger issue is that San Francisco got the ball back with 29 seconds and the game tied, but had no time outs.  Maybe if they had had to use them, they could have had more options to attack the middle of the field as they marched towards field goal range.  The final field goal try was long, but makeable (59 yards); the kick wound up short, so a couple more yards might have made the difference.

Well, it is annoying when he gets out of sync like that.

On the other hand, that particular concern would make it seem he would be quite at home posting on the Cardboard.

Re: Harbaugh in demand - CornFed - 12-22-2014

Setting and audience should be considered, though, I think.

His interpretation of the word doesn't match that in a number of well-known quotes.

Re: Harbaugh in demand - yvonne - 12-24-2014

Earlier this week, I read on various forums and news articles quoting this Facebook post from AdamSchefter. It seemed odd because they were adamant about staying out of things during the last turnover, for want of a better name. Well, here's an article quoting John Harbaugh himself, stating that not only is the family not encouraging him to go to Michigan, he and his father have asked him not to tell them what his plans are, lest they be quoted.

I can't imagine Jim backing down from the challenge of NFL coaching while his brother is still an NFL head coach.  He'd never live it down :p

The thing is, he's young enough to still make it work. I imagine he might have a list like this scribbled out on a legal pad in his office:

Step 1: Head to Michigan.
Step 2: Turn the program around, earn $50M while doing so, and win a national championship within five years.
Step 3: Supervise the building of a statue in my honor.
Step 4: Once again become the most coveted coach in football.
Step 5: Choose a landing spot in the NFL.
Step 6: Win Super Bowl. (If Pete Carroll can do it, I certainly can.)

Today is the last game for the 49ers, and, barring an unlikely turn of events, for Harbaugh as the 49ers coach.  Michigan thinks he will be their next coach, but apparently, he will have multiple suitors from the NFL.
