Re: Ruef.  If Tara wants her back, I can't see her not coming back.

Re: Chiney.  I still maintain that any stat suggesting that the team plays better without her on the court is a dubious one, but I appreciate MT's take on why a stat such as that might occur.  I do agree that the one player who might benefit from Chiney's absence (offensively) is Amber.  I think MT is right on about the double/triple teams clogging the lanes. There might, however,  be a better way to address this problem.

I've liked seeing Chiney at the high post lately.  The post-Chiney-low and force the ball into her was sub-optimal.  Chiney s not Jayne down on the low post.  Chiney is a slasher, who can drive with the ball from the high post and crash the boards without it.  She can also catch the ball, pass it and then quickly post up before the defense can react.  I think there is better ball movement and less standing around watching when she starts the possession around the foul line.

As MT says, it also gives Amber room to operate, which she has shown she can do, if the middle is not clogged.  I confess that I have been having a hard time figuring Amber out all year.

I also completely agree that some of our bench players would benefit from seeing some meaningful minutes in some up coming games. I particularly hope to see both Jasmine and Tess get more playing time.

There are only two ways Ruef could return:

(1) She walks on -- no scholarship.
(2) Or another player who was promised a scholarship quits the team or changes to walk-on status.

To give a bit more detail on this: WBB is limited to 15 scholarships. (You can't play a trick like giving a 2-sport player her scholarship in a different sport, because basketball is considered primary, so if a student has an athletic scholarship and plays on the basketball team, her scholarship counts against the basketball team's limit, even if she plays another sport also. A player might have an academic scholarship, but the NCAA would scrutinize that closely to make sure she would have gotten that same scholarship even if she didn't play a sport.)

This is the projected roster for next year. There are 15 scholarship players and 3 walk-ons, without Ruef.

References on the CardBoard. I think that's a first.

Next time, could you do it in APA style?

Hee hee.

A properly-spaced table!  I tip my hat to you.

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Colorado 56 - M T - 01-31-2013

(Putting in tables is a bit of a pain, but it also quickly chews up characters toward the 8000 character limit.  Things like right justifying columns is really expensive in characters.  For the stats I generate, I added code to generate a version with the tabular encoding for the Cardboard.)

Regarding Ruef:  I went to an elite school as an undergrad that wasn't (and isn't) allowed to have athletic scholarships, yet many of us competed in sports (for me, 2-3 hrs of workout from before school started in the fall until late March, plus what I did in the summers).  If Ruef wants to play basketball, I hope that's up to her and her finances.  I'm sure there are numerous students at Stanford and similar schools that either finance their education themselves or with the help of family.  I believe Stanford can still pay certain direct expenses (uniforms, airfare to games, hotels).  Certainly when I was in grad school, I was employed by that school as a research assistant, which more than covered my (at that school, less) tuition.  Of course Stanford would want to be very careful to make sure there is no question that she is treated differently than others.  That will be difficult because she will have a full load with classes & basketball from December to March or April, but the great thing about RA is that your RA work is part of your education.

And, if it doesn't work out for Stanford, then I hope she can find another school where she can play her last year of eligibility, and that the NCAA allows this.  Who knows, maybe she could get a scholarship that way.

This brings up a strategy for multi-sport, quality students, that go to schools with athletic scholarships.  Play one sport as an undergrad and plan on playing the other as a grad student.  I don't know if Kristin Folkl  went to grad school, but it might have been a way she could have played both sports without the overlap of seasons.

I don't know if the NCAA has any rules against this.  Imagine if a Folkl-style player was considering Stanford.  Could Stanford offer a scholarship in, say, VB during her undergrad days (assuming she meets admissions) with a possibility (or even a promise?) of a scholarship to play BB during grad school (assuming she meets admissions for that)?

Like Michelle Harrison, who went on to Utah for her final year of eligibility.  I, for one, would be a bit sad to see that happen--but she does deserve another year one way or the other.
