I've been hearing that for years, so I suspect it's true, but who knows?

Time to return to reiterate: true freshman QBs nearly always stink out loud. Rosen leading is probably more of a negative indicator about the other QBs in baby blue and gold than a positive statement about his current ability.

True. Reported in the press at the time that Shaw delivered news of his acceptance around NSD. His delay in announcing on NSD gave us some suspense that he would join our 2012 recruiting class. I think Shaw has been asked about it several times by the media and he's confirmed it.
Which is how I found out about TheCARDboard, surfing the web looking for info on that 2012 class. 3 wonderful years later and we are anticipating the most talent laden class in our football program's history.

I've wondered about the Winston-Stanford near miss on more than one occasion (usually when he gets into trouble). I knew he had been offered, but I didn't know he had been accepted. Several articles announcing his commitment are all dated August 3, 2011.
Are recruits (even "special" ones) typically accepted that early? I'm presuming the latest date of acceptance might be fairly immediately prior to national signing day, but what would be the earliest date?

Winston was being recruited after his commitment and visited in January.

Thanks for the additional info. Says something about him that he cared enough (for whatever reason) to stick with it, including the AP classes, etc., until acceptance/rejection time.

Winston fit a lot of profiles admissions seems to look for:
- African-American from a state from which we get almost no one
- passable academics (I have no idea if this is true or not, but I assume so if he were accepted)
- exceptional HS achievement (being the best HS QB in the country)
Not to mention the 'football-coach-begged-us' admissions premium.

Funny you should mention that.

From time to time you'll hear anecdotal chatter on message boards that Rosen and family made demands Shaw was unwilling to meet. Dunno if true, but the idea is out there.

Just out of curiosity, what demands might a recruit make? Playing time? Wear #7 or #12? A guarantee not to be taped to the goal post at any point during summer camp?

Generally true, but there are exceptions. Kyle Allen at Texas A&M is the one that immediately jumps to mind. Could Rosen be another? Time will tell.

Kyle Allen's case is mixed - though better than most true frosh qbs.
He took over for the last five games of the season when Kenny Hill got temporarily kicked off the team.
He had good games against Auburn and the bowl game vs West Virginia, but his performance overall wasn't as good as Hill's (rating was 139.5 vs 154.6), and he is still locked in a battle for the starting job with a guy who is having trouble staying out of jail.
Re: history of recruiting question -
washingtonismoney - 04-16-2015
Yeah, 6.89 YPA/61.5% completion rate is pretty mediocre.* As CTCard notes, that's actually really good for a true freshman QB. But still, you won't win too many games that way.
* (and that's distorted by his 12/16 for 122 yards performance against Lamar)

A follow up to my original post in this thread. If you believe that Stanford has the advantage in recruiting battles for California recruits with a 4+ GPA, then look out for Javon McKinley. He's got his 4.167 GPA posted prominently on his hudl profile. Scout says he's planning a visit to Stanford when he goes up north for The Opening in Oakland. I would think Crawford (3.8 as of last summer) and Imatorbhebhe (4.2) can pass admissions muster as well. When was the last time Stanford got campus visits from 3 admissible WRs of that quality? I hope Shaw can land at least one of the three. Of course, let's not forget about Fehoko (almost a 4.0) who seems like a lock to commit, though it sounds like he may take a mission before coming to Stanford. This is a really great class for academically-oriented WRs.Â

It's been reported here and elsewhere that the concern was his attitude.Â
Yes. That has been reported ...

He didn't do himself any favors with his appearance on ESPN's Elite 11 special, you'll recall. Trent Dilfer and the other coaches openly questioned whether or not he would be able to learn a college system, not because he wasn't smart enough, but because he would think he knew better than the coaches. That scene explained everything to me.

I recall reading a somewhat lengthy interview with Rosen. My initial impression was that it was a put-on, that his ego was so overwhelming that it couldn't possibly be real.

Here's an article on Josh Rosen. Sure makes him sound like an OK guy. Of course, you aren't going to write an article like this and tell it how it is.

He has a pretty lengthy Wikipedia page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Rosen. Only one of Stanford's 22 recruits from the same year has a Wikipedia page, and it's about his track accomplishments. It doesn't mention Stanford and doesn't look like it's been updated since 2013.
Todd Husak might have had some insights into Rosen. He's an alum of St. John Bosco.
