That's going to really help USC and UCLA in the two all sport tallies.  Both should claim multiple NCAA team titles in sand volleyball and the sport should give them 75-100 points per year in the Directors' cup too.

Re: Directors Cupdate - BobK - 05-14-2015

My guess is that Stanford got 30 points for Women's Lacrosse and UCLA none.  For MVB Both schools with a zero.

Is that correct?

UCLA is in both Golf and both Tennis Tournaments, on to the finals excpet for Men's Golf which just started.

We are in 3 of those four, finishing 17th??? in Men's Tennis???

Re: Directors Cupdate - Viking_Guy - 05-14-2015

Bob--

I think women will get 25 points for lacrosse (that's what 17th scored last year); doesn't really matter, because it will be dropped when tennis and golf are scored.

Yep, 17th in men's tennis (for 50 points); UCLA is currently playing #1 Oklahoma, trailing 3-2 with two singles matches in the third set and having to move indoors because of lightning in Waco.

Neither scored for men's vball; Stanford with 100 and UCLA with 90 for women's water polo.

Re: Directors Cupdate - Farm93 - 05-14-2015

Bob -

Most of the points for both schools are either known or easy to project.  The exceptions will determine the winner.

If Stanford finishes out the spring with teams finishing in spots consistent with their rankings then Stanford will finish just around 1,400 points.  Men's golf, ranked #11, would be a critical set of lost points if they fail to advance out of the regional.  All other sports could add, but in most cases would need to finish in the quarterfinals and/or top 10 to really help.  The golf is big.  Without golf, Stanford's ceiling falls to 1,370 or so.

If UCLA finishes out the spring with teams finishing in spots consistent with their current rankings then UCLA will finish just around 1,350 points.  However, they have a lot more teams set to make major contributions in May and June.  If those teams exceed their seeding/ranking then 1,400 is in the realm.

UCLA's tennis teams have pretty much reached the rounds implied by their seeding, so any more wins add to the 1,350 and if Stanford's ceiling at 1,370 the game quickly becomes one about UCLA losing early in baseball, softball, etc.

Re: Directors Cupdate - terry - 05-14-2015

UCLA men's tennis has been eliminated. Lost to # 1 Oklahoma 4-3. Almost pulled off the upset, but not quite.

Re: Directors Cupdate - BobK - 05-14-2015

Thanks all.  So 64 for UCLA Men's Tennis I believe.
If so Stanford 1,226
UCLA  885
as up today

Re: Directors Cupdate - Viking_Guy - 05-14-2015

Okay, let's do this.

Stanford

Men
SportFinishPoints
Cross Country290
Gymnastics290
Swimming673.5
Water Polo372.5
Fencing1060
Tennis1750
Soccer1750
Football2645
Wrestling3538.5
Current total569.5

Men can still score points in: Golf (minimum of 5 points for being in the field); Outdoor T+F (ranked 23 - would score roughly 48 points.)  If both score, the lowest scoring sport will be eliminated.

Women
SportFinishPoints
Water Polo1100
Swimming385
Soccer383
Volleyball383
Gymnastics575
Indoor T+F870.5
Basketball964
Cross Country1461.5
Field Hockey560
Lacrosse1725
Current total707

Lacrosse will be eliminated when either tennis or golf is scored.

Women can still score points in: Golf (minimum of 50 points for being in the final 24); Tennis (minimum of 64 for being in Sweet 16); Rowing (ranked 6 - would score 72 points); Outdoor T+F (ranked 13 - would score roughly 63 points.)

If the women finish as ranked, scoring would be around 750-760; right now the minimum would be 746 (+39 with tennis replacing lacrosse.)

Re: Directors Cupdate - Viking_Guy - 05-14-2015

UCLA

Men
SportFinishPoints
Water Polo1100
Soccer290
Football1067.5
Basketball964
Tennis964
Cross Country1856
Indoor T+F625
Current total446.5

Men can still score points in: Golf (minimum of 5 points for being in the field); Baseball (ranked 2 - 90 points); Outdoor Track and Field (unranked - didn't score in indoor.) Note UCLA may not score in 10 events for men if T+F does not.

Women
SportFinishPoints
Water Polo290
Soccer573
Gymnastics768.25
Volleyball964
Swimming2351
Cross Country2747
Indoor T+F2845.5
Current total438.75

Women can still score points in: Golf (minimum of 50 points for being in the final 24); Tennis (minimum of 64 for being in Sweet 16); Rowing (ranked 17 - would score 72 points); Outdoor T+F (Unranked); Softball (ranked 7 - minimum of 25 points for being in field).

Scoring in three sports before beginning to lose sports.  Minimum women's score right now is 577.25.

Re: Directors Cupdate - Farm93 - 05-14-2015

Sure, and if you put that all together.  You will see a total in the 1350-1410 range.
The Stanford variables are easy.  Men's T&F & Men's Golf
To get to my current dream of 1402.5, I assume T&F will get 49 points.  Golf will get 63.  Providing 643.
It is the 63 that is the worry of the day.  Though wrestling's 38.5 provides a nice floor.

On the women's side, it almost doesn't matter.  I get to 759.5 with women's rowing providing 72.  However even if their boats sink, Stanford has several women's results in the 60 point range in reserve.

So if men's golf and men's track & field have solid performances it is 1390 - 1400.  If golf fails to advance, simply take 25 points from the ceiling.  That's how that ~1,370 noted earlier becomes possible.

The real drama is on UCLA's side.
I have them at 1319.25 right now.  I am hoping/projecting - Baseball - 90, Women's Golf - 90, Softball 78, Women's Tennis 73, Men's Golf - 63, Women's Rowing 40 (won't count probably) and now the known Men's Tennis at 64.  The trick is they have 4 or 5 sports that could easily produce 90 or 100 points.  Men's tennis was in that last too, so that loss was on target and helpful.  Still, it really takes only one or two to zip over Stanford's lower ceiling.  Should be OK, but it will be close

Re: Directors Cupdate - Viking_Guy - 05-14-2015

F93--

Mostly doing it to have a readily cut and paste-able table to update as results warrant.

The big variance I think could be in T+F, where the scoring is such that one career day for an individual can create such a difference in team scoring. See the aforementioned Kori Carter winning the 400M and placing second in the 100M hurdles, lifting Stanford from 18th to 6th in the 2013 NCAAs.  Her performance was worth 17.25 points in the NACDA standings; Stanford won by 16.5.  If some Bruin runner or athlete, especially on the men's side, say Pac-12 shot put champ Nicolas Scarvelis, decide to have the day of his life in June, we're in trouble.  Especially as UCLA needs scoring from T+F to hit on all 10 scoring opportunities on the men's side, and will not lose from any offsets.

Any track or field afficianados out there with more of a clue about the relative strengths of the Bruins' top stars?

I'll be in LA at the Pac 12 T&F meet and will know far more then.

Re: Directors Cupdate - BigEasyCard - 05-15-2015

Men's Golf finishes day 2 of regional tournament in first place with 10 stroke lead over sixth place team.  So advancing to the final and earning a minimum of 50 Cup points is now highly likely.

For me, an important aspect of the Cup competition is that every effort matters, and it draws me to follow sports that I would otherwise ignore.

Geaux Cardinal!

Re: Directors Cupdate - terry - 05-15-2015

In women's tennis, Stanford advanced, which is better than expected based on its seeding. So that's a few extra Directors Cup points. UCLA advanced also, playing to form.

UCLA has the tougher draw in the next round, facing #2 North Carolina. Stanford plays #6 Georgia.

Re: Directors Cupdate - BostonCard - 05-15-2015

What's the new floor for us, given that the women's tennis team made it to at least the quarterfinals.

BC

Re: Directors Cupdate - Viking_Guy - 05-15-2015

BC--

Right now, with women's tennis to replace lacrosse, the women would score 755.  Scoring 5 for men's golf (the minimum for participation in the tournament) score a minimum of 574.5, for a total of 1329.5.  If men's golf makes the finals by finishing 5th or better tomorrow, that goes up at least 45 points, to 1374.5.

The questions are:
(1) will men's track and field outscore men's wrestling and supplant it in the scoring?
(2) will women's golf, track and field and/or rowing finish high enough to start knocking out field hockey, cross-country, and maybe even (shudder) basketball?

In women's golf, last year, 14th place overall scored 61.5 points.
In women's rowing, 9th scored 63 points.
In women's track and field, 14th was 61.5 points.

In men's track and field, 33rd was worth 40 points.

Finishes better than those will add to the total.

Re: Directors Cupdate - BostonCard - 05-15-2015

The other questions are whether women's tennis can keep winning.  If they beat Georgia, we'll pick up more points.  If they then beat their semifinals opponent ?South Carolina[The other SC], that adds to the point total.  Ditto golf, which could get hot at the right time and do well in match play, that's more points.

Re: Directors Cupdate - Viking_Guy - 05-15-2015

BC--

Yep, I'm only scoring at the events that have been scored (or have a guaranteed minimum) at this point.  So I scored women's tennis at 73, men's golf at 5, and women's golf at 50.  Track and field and women's rowing won't have guaranteed minimums until the competitions actually kick off.

BC, I have the floor at 1368.50.  Difference of 6 points from VG's tally is because I have 44 points for Men's Golf due to 30 teams in final (versus 24 for women).  That's a guess, and it affects Stanford and UCLA numbers identically.

For UCLA, my spreadsheet, based mostly on VG's numbers, now shows  a total of 490.5 for the men and 561.75 for the women and a grand total of 1,052.25.  So Stanford's lead is now 316.25 points.  As others have shown in excellent detail, UCLA has significantly more opportunities to improve their total than do the Cardinal.

The 20 point swing from Women's Water Polo last Sunday came at just the right time.

Re: Directors Cupdate - Viking_Guy - 05-16-2015

BEC--

You're right; I was going off the expectation of 24 teams through, rather than 30.

UCLA softball doing well.  Bruin women's tennis plays the first match tomorrow v. UNC at 10 AM ET, then Stanford follows against UGA at 1.
