I think the target audience for this is the students and recruits, for which "the brand" has at most a four year history (well, I guess for students it might have a seven year history).  So for this group, it makes sense to go for a more edgy, trendy brand, and eschew tradition.  Kind of the reason we occasionally bring out the black uniforms, even though black is not a Stanford color.  The players like it.

This isn't a logo, and shouldn't be judged by those standards.  It's an image to be used for a single event.

Stanford's black uniforms aren't "on brand' either. But many students and players lpve them, and they are consistent with a Stanford brand that often zigs when others stay a tedious course--see, e.g, The Thunderchickens, The Tree, and Shayne Skov.  However much I appreciate Stanford's tradition, I love that Stanford is not tradition-bound.  To me, that is the essence of the Stanford brand--and a major strength of the institution.

But even with the black uniforms, Stanford retains the familiar cardinal Block S logo on the helmet. We don't both change the color and adopt an unrecognizable logo.

Well, it's not quite just for a single event - though as far as I know it is as a single shot as a football helmet.

That logo image is also on their basketball floor and moving onto their clothing. I think it's supposed to be the "new" b.e.a.r.

About that simple block S - Redrum - 05-20-2015

Next year's model, at least in black.  But the GOOD news is Bernard Muir took a big risk to raise Stanford athletics' competitiveness.

Good point, Garvin.  But not every aspect of a brand is the product of a calculated decision by a marketing department.  And Stanford's willingness to embrace, and even encourage, the odd, the uncalculated, and the utterly irreverent is part of what everyone sees as an element of our Stanford brand.  Our marketers took the Thunderchickens and ran with them. for example--and with the Chicken's signature white shoes, speaking of unorthodox.

Stanford's helmet logo next year still has the cardinal Block S. Yes, it has a tree on it now, but it's still a cardinal Block S. We're not scrapping the cardinal Block S logo, unlike the C.al helmet in this thread, which scrapped the script C.al logo.

The Block S with tree has been used as a Stanford symbol for many years. If anything, the Block S with tree is more recognizable as a symbol of Stanford than just the plain Block S. Stanford's branding guidelines describe the Block S with tree as "one of the most proprietary symbols of Stanford University." Unlike C.al, we're not putting a completely new, different logo on our helmet. We're using a well-established logo with strong brand identification.

And yeah, C.al's new logo actually does look sort of like a baboon --

I agree re: the Tree and Stanford logo.  There are a lot of block "S" logos out there; in fact, whenever I see the Michigan State logo I do a little doubletake.  Nice to have the Stanford w/tree logo.

Cornell actually has one of those in their logo.  During their NCAA tournament run in basketball in 2010, I suggested that they change their name from the Cornell Big Red to the Cornell Koalas.  That would just sound awesome, wouldn't it?

Or the Syracuse logo, for that matter....

This thread should really return back to good ole UCB.

Big props for the 3 programs that earned Public Recognition Rewards for their recent APR results.  Wow!

http://www.calbears.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30100&ATCLID=210099016
"Overall, Cal has had 20 teams earn special distinction over the past six years – second-most in the Pac-12 during that span – and 10 different programs have been publically recognized since the NCAA began acknowledging teams in 2004-05."

Amazing!  Wonder why they didn't mention which Pac-12 program has a more impressive APR run?

http://www.gostanford.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30600&ATCLID=210099029
"A total of 19 Stanford varsity athletic teams have received Division I Academic Progress Rate Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA, as announced Wednesday. ... Stanford accounted for more than half of the Pac-12 sports receiving recognition (36)."
