An excellent third round today: +8 296 - oldalum - 05-24-2015

Hard to judge how the course is playing today versus the first two days, but there were only about 5 rounds posted under 300 in the first two rounds, so this seems like an excellent third round for the Cardinal. We passed our playing partner, Northwestern, who was 5 ahead of us before the third round, and it seems likely other teams will drop behind us as the day goes on.

Re: Women's Golf at NCAA Final - CornFed - 05-24-2015

We are in a very uncomfortable position, though, if the top eight get through to match play.  We're done in ninth right now and have to rely on teams dropping and no teams getting "hot".

oldalum, if you click on the Team/Player Stats button at the top of the page then click View Course Stats, you can see the average scores:
Round 1 - 78.35
Round 2 - 79.21
Round 3 - 78.40 (with 102 of 132 players still on the golf course)

A really resilient effort by the team today.  After a horrible 2nd round in which only one player broke 80, they struggled on the front 9 today.  But the top 4 played the back 9 in even par, a stellar accomplishment that allowed Stanford to pass a lot of teams.  Especially notable today - Casey Danielson shot 74 after an 87 yesterday.  Stanford is assured of making the cut and will definitely be in the hunt for a spot in the top 8.  Mariah Stackhouse only made 1 birdie today and bogied two of the par 5s, but still posted a 75 which will place her in the top 10 with one round left.

CornFed, the top 8 schools to advance to match play are not determined until after tomorrow's round.  Still 18 holes to go.

Re: Women's Golf at NCAA Final - CornFed - 05-24-2015

I had lost track of that.  The grittiness of this team makes me think we just need to grind away.  I'm glad we still have a round to go and can affect our own destiny.  It scared me to think we were done and in ninth.

Re: Women's Golf at NCAA Final - winflop - 05-24-2015

Our ladies will only move up in the standings today - now T8.  They are done with Round 3 and all the other top 15 are still on the course except for Northwestern.  Given how hard the course is playing, other teams will only go further over par.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if by the end of Round 3 they are in the top 4.  Only 3 shots behind UW for 5th, and Tennessee or Arizona could easily go +15 or higher today.

Re: Women's Golf at NCAA Final - Farm93 - 05-24-2015

As it stands Stanford might be the only program to have two rounds under 300.  If 4th round is like the 1st and the 3rd then all will be fine.  If the 4th round is like the 2nd then Stanford will be toast.

Match play would be interesting.  Some squads have more consistent 1-5 play, but Stanford's top 3 at their best probably would have an excellent chance of winning.

Got to have a good 4th round, but nice to know Stanford is in the mix.

Re: Women's Golf at NCAA Final - Hulk01 - 05-24-2015

A good bet we'll be 6th or 5th after today's final putt.  For 51 holes, SC and Duke have outplayed our team. We're +36 for those 51 holes, and +12 for yesterday's final three-hole fiasco.

Re: Women's Golf at NCAA Final - Hulk01 - 05-24-2015

I'm pegging +63 as the cut.  That likely means the #3 UCLA is out unless they can manage a brilliant round.  #6 LSU, #9 A&M, and #11 Wake easily could be gone, too, and #10 Virginia is good as out, too.  This of course makes it easier for Stanford to make the final eight.  But SC looks like a monster, and while Duke may all but concede points at number five, their wicked everywhere else.

[size=1.35em]Six of the eight teams ahead of Stanford were still on the front nine when play was suspended because of lightning at 15:45 Eastern. Even if they manage to restart, those squads will have to play ~27 holes tomorrow. Sometimes, being in the clubhouse ain't bad...

Re: Women's Golf at NCAA Final - terry - 05-24-2015

Stanford seems almost certain to finish the day in the top 8. We should be in a good position for tomorrow's round.

Re: Women's Golf at NCAA Final - FarmDad.01 - 05-24-2015

[size=1.35em]As of this writing, UCLA is tied with Bama for the last slot and holds the tiebreaker.

But its four scoring players must play their last 18 holes in no worse than even par.

Re: Women's Golf at NCAA Final - oldalum - 05-24-2015

What is the tiebreaker?

(I think you meant, UCLA must play the last 6 holes in even par)

If they resolve ties the same way as at the regionals, all 5 players for the tied teams play one hole.  Lower cumulative score advances.  If still tied, the teams play another hole.

Re: Women's Golf at NCAA Final - FarmDad.01 - 05-24-2015

[size=1.35em]The tiebreaker is the aggregate score of the 5th (non-scored player) in each round.

Teams don't play together, so the holes-remaining that I gave a while ago was accurate. It's since dropped.

Cheers to other golfers who care...

Re: Women's Golf at NCAA Final - terry - 05-24-2015

The round was suspended due to darkness with UCLA in 16th place, one stroke out of 15th. UCLA needs to play the rest of the round at 1 under par to reach the cut line. Or they need to hope Wake Forest or South Carolina blows up.

Stanford will finish the round in 7th place, which is solid. Stanford is within striking distance (7 strokes) of 3rd place.

Re: Women's Golf at NCAA Final - FarmDad.01 - 05-24-2015

[size=1.35em]All five UCLA women golfers -- four of whose scores will count -- must aggregate -1 for their last combined 13 holes to tie U.Alabama, against which I think they win the tiebreaker. Less than that, it's a crestfallen plane ride home. Talk about pressure.

It appears the daily afternoon storms pelting the course finally softened the greens enough that by late Sunday (Rd 3), golfers could post decent scores. May more rain fall overnight.

If UCLA fails to make the cut, I think the Director's Cup is Stanford"s?

Round 3 is complete. UCLA went 2 over par down the stretch and did not catch Alabama. But the Bruins made the cut anyway because South Carolina collapsed and fell below the Bruins. That will give UCLA a chance to move up in Round 4, possibly helping their Directors' Cup total.

The goal today in Round 4 will be to finish in the top 8 and advance to match play. Stanford currently is 7th, just 2 strokes out of 4th, so we're in a decent position. But we're just 3 strokes ahead of #9, so there's not much room for mistakes. UCLA is 15th, 16 strokes out of the top 8, so they have some work to do.

Cardinal now in 5th at +2 through holes 5 to 7 today.  At +50 for tournament they are 6 shots ahead of the two eighth place teams.

UCLA firmly in 15th place, 6 shots behind 14th place Alabama and already at holes 11 through 14.

Geaux Cardinal!
