Duvall decommited.  😳

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - 81alum - 06-17-2016

Here is Hoopgurlz current (June 17) listing for players considering Stanford:

97  Kiana Williams, PG  Karen Wagner H.S. (TX)

95 Maya Dodson, W St. Francis H.S. (GA)

94 Autumn Newby, F Archer H.S. (GA)

92 Shalexxus Aaron, W Juanita H.S. (WA)

91 Estella Moschkau, W Edgewood H.S. (WI)

90 Tea Adams, PG Juanita H.S. (WA)

90 Chantel Horvat, G

Who is missing from this list who we have previously discussed?
Lauryn Satterwhite, Jordan Cruz, Mikayla Coombs, Lindsey Duvall.

Who is a new name we have not previously discussed?
Chantel Horvat.

Keep in mind that this is mostly information reported by the recruits--a recruit could say she was interested in Stanford even if Stanford was not interested in her.  And a recruit could be actively courted by Stanford and not tell Hoopgurlz about it.  So that makes all this information highly speculative.

That said, what is bothersome is the lack of tall forwards among this group, given that Erica and Kailee will need to be replaced by this class.

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - 81alum - 06-17-2016

Chantel Horvat
Member the U19 Australian team.
Quote:Fundamental, athletic combo-guard brings size to the back court; drives and finishes in traffic; quick 1st-step attack manufactures in mid-range game , stationary game extends to the arc; finishes plays in transition with body control to rim. (Olson)
I note that she is classed as a forward in Australia, although Olson calls her a "combo guard."  She is 185 centimeters, which I believe is 6'1".

This video is from 2013 when she is pretty young.  The photo in the article from 2015 shows a much stronger physique.  The final article is from just a couple of weeks ago and is quite current.  If I am not mistaken, she and Alanna played together in Russia last summer.

Quote:  Horvat has a host of schools reportedly chasing her, including Arizona, Stanford, UCLA, Florida, Oklahoma, Utah, Washington and TCU.
Making a short list is proving difficult but she has the help of her coaches, her father and the first-hand experiences of her friends.  "I wanted to keep my options open and I wasn't sure college was for me until recently," Horvat said.  "It's such a great opportunity to get a degree as well as play the sport you love.  "Trying to get a handle on which school to pick is a bit overwhelming but a bit of fun as well - talking to college coaches has been an experience. There is nothing like it."  College coaches regularly schedule times to speak with Horvat on the phone and promote their school and why she should attend. They say her athletic style of play should be a good fit in the US game.  "I'm getting a lot of great advice from my dad and from friends who tell me how they did it," Horvat said.  "You have to work out which school will be the right fit, what it will be like day in, day out for your development, your academics and even whether you will get to play in your best position.

The Oklahoma boards say they are recruiting her, which fits with the newspaper story.  We do not really know very much about her academics, so it is hard to know if she will be a fit for us or not.  Her statement does indicate a concern for academics, which is a good thing, but also a concern for playing her position.  I wonder if this is a reference to whether she will be able to play forward, given Olson's odd reference to her as a "combo guard."

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - BobK - 06-17-2016

I do not believe Adams nor Aaron are Stanford prospects.  Both have a long list of schools on PN and none are Stanford.

In our to be Sr class we know all at this time in the summer before their Sr year.

In our to be JR class our first recruit weas public about July 7.

I believe Cruz is a Utah commit. I'd say we have good depth for the PG position with Lili, Marta, and Anna. We could sure use more size (after this season) to compliment Nadia and Kaylee. Not sure how Coffee will do but having a 6'5 that is mobile and can score would be a brobdingnagian plus.

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - BobK - 06-17-2016

Cruz is going to Utah, nice catch.

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - 81alum - 06-17-2016

Then the players that we suspect could still be under consideration would be:
Williams, Dodson, Newby, Moschkau, Horvat, Satterwhite, Coombs, Duvall.

Dodson:

Newby:

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - JasonJT - 06-19-2016

I think I read on the Baylor Boards (plus Texas Boards) that Kiana Williams is basically going to Stanford (she's just awaiting admissions).  Whether that is true or not, who knows.

So the 2017-2018 roster would be

PG Sniezek (JR) / Wilson (SO)
SG McPhee (SR) / Romano (JR) / Brewer (SO)
SF Carrington (SO)
PF Smith (JR) / Fingall (SO)
C Johnson (SR) / Coffee (JR)

Guessing Fingall can probably play 4/5, McPhee will play 2/3, and maybe we will see Sniezek/Wilson backcourt.  Maybe Brewer would be a surprise but not exactly the strongest roster.  A post and a SG are the biggest needs (Coombs is rated very high on some services).  A wing, especially once McPhee graduates.  I think Dodson is a 3/4, so she would be a great get.

I think something like Williams, Coombs, Dodson and a post would be a great class.

That would be great, but this quote from March 28 seems to suggest otherwise:
Quote:[s]“I want to go far, but it comes first with my grades and stuff, so I got to make sure I keep them up, but if I do I see me going pretty far as long as I don’t have any injuries or anything, going to a DI college,” she said. “A dream school, I kind of want to go to Maryland. Maryland is one of the schools that I like. Notre Dame, Ohio State and Connecticut, so out of those top, Connecticut is my dream school and Maryland.”

Last Autumn, Kianna's family hosted Tara on a home visit:
https://twitter.com/safinestbball/status/643260042985144321

In November, she listed Stanford as one of her top five, and Maryland and UConn were not mentioned.  Not so in March.

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - JasonJT - 06-20-2016

Thats a different Kiana Williams.  That one is from the Baltimore area, the one Stanford is interested is from Texas.

Thank you!  Wow, that is a relief.  The Maryland Kiana Williams is a year behind the Texas Kiana Williams.  The Texas Kiana Williams who IS interested in Stanford is ranked 12 on ESPN.  Thank you for catching that--far more optimistic news.

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - BostonCard - 07-27-2016

Boy this thread got buried...  Thankfully I could just search for WBB to narrow down the threads.

In any case, Andy has a free article about Williams (the Texan):

https://stanford.rivals.com/news/2017-introduction-kiana-williams

She is "on the verge" of submitting her application.

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - BobK - 07-27-2016

This was Andy's first story:Deja Church

https://stanford.rivals.com/news/2017-introduction-deja-church

Church is a Guard ranked 58 on PN

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - JasonJT - 08-03-2016

Top 3 (along with ND and Tenn) for Maya Dodson per Dan Olsen.

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - 81alum - 08-04-2016

ESPN has the following listed as "considering" Stanford.
Kianna Williams
Maya Dodson
Autumn Newby
Shalexxus Aaron
Estella Moschkau
Tea Adams
Chantel Horvat

To these we can add this additional name based on the recent story.

Deja Church

But it is not possible to confirm that Stanford is interested in all of these players--for example, I have not seen press stories that Stanford has recruited Aaron or Adams, although they are interested in us.

So my guess is that these are the most serious, public prospects:

Kianna Williams
Maya Dodson
Autumn Newby
Estella Moschkau
Chantel Horvat
Deja Church

We will have five scholarships, although the coaches have said they might save one to even out the recruiting.  And every year for some time now the coaches have announced at least one recruit who was completely off our radar.  I think unlike most schools, the tricky admissions process here causes some families to treat their Stanford recruiting very privately and to not advertise that their girls are being recruited, to lessen embarrassment if the admissions decision is negative.  So we rarely know who all the prospects are......

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - BobK - 08-04-2016

never Aaron not Adams

We have 5 openings this season but just 2 the following

I think I read a Kate interview in which she said that is a possibility.  My guess is that it will depend upon who we get, but a 4-3 split of the scholarships does seem more reasonable than a 5-2, especially given how experience seems to matter a lot in Tara's systems.

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - 81alum - 08-05-2016

To sum up the distribution and types of players that are in the mix so far as we know:
Kiana Williams, 5'7" pg, ESPN #12
Maya Dodsen, 6'3" wing, ESPN #20
Autumn Newby, 6'2" forward, ESPN #27
Estella Moschkau, 6'2" wing, ESPN # 56
Chantel Horvat, 6'1" guard, Australian under 19 team, ESPN #19 position rank
Deja Church, 5'10" wing, Prospects #58

Re: WBB: 2017 recruiting - BobK - 08-05-2016

Not Newby who is visiting three schools and not Stanford.
