Re: Cutty Sark! - pefloresjr - 08-23-2015

This was way back in the 80's before instant media society, but I can't imagine Jack Elway showing up to an open bar event and not getting drunk.  Of course, Jack was an old pro at it so he could hold his liquor and wouldn't have made a fool of himself.  He had a pretty unsuccessful 5 year run coaching Stanford, but at the time he was hired, I was happy because I was tired of losing to San Jose State.

Cheers,
Pete F.

Re: Cutty Sark! - OutsiderFan - 08-23-2015

I'd almost give up a home game with USC to get them to play at Stanford again this year so the band could have its way with Sarksleazeian.  He may well be fired by this time next year.

Remember Treyjohn Butler saying one reason he chose Stanford was because no Stanford coaches talked badly about other schools?  Sure would love to know the USC recruiting pitch against Stanford these days...

Backwards Sark Is Crass

Re: Cutty Sark! - needle - 08-23-2015

It's not showing up drunk, it's saying things that piss off big donors.

I really think this might be his last year at SC.

Bruce Feldman reports there's been some concern about Sarkisian's off-field behavior: http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/steve-sarkisian-apologizes-inappropriate-behavior-usc-trojans-pat-haden-salute-to-troy-082315

Did I miss something?  I can't see any reference to public drunkenness in the article, and that seems to be a key part of the incident.  Selective or lazy reporting?

An article about the apology...

Re: Cutty Sark! - JohnR34231 - 08-23-2015

The authors of these articles are having a real hard time with the McKays.

John McKay was a coach at U$C
John McKay, Jr. was a player at U$C

P.S. We'll see what happens, but somehow I have a feeling that if Sark wins the Pac-12 this year and gets his team in the playoffs, the Big Donors are going to be very forgiving.

Re: Cutty Sark! - Mick - 08-23-2015

How do you beat a DUI in court?  I've never had one or been on a jury in a DUI trial, although my father was on a jury for a DUI trial.  My dad was truly conservative and in his eyes, there was very little you could do that was worse than drinking and driving, but he said he was pretty uncertain as to the guilt of the accused.

It will be interesting to see how this story develops beyond the West.  Here's a link to a brief story in the New Orleans paper:
http://www.nola.com/lsu/index.ssf/2015/08/southern_cal_coach_steve_sarke.html
Love the parting shot/irony about Ed Orgeron being passed over for the permanent HC job possibly because he wasn't "polished" enough (he's the DL coach at LSU, hence the tie-in to the story).
I don't think anyone would accuse Sark of being "polished"... although he may be "polished off" if another incident occurs.

I wonder what would happen to Shaw if this had been him.  Then again, consider who the AD is - probably nothing.

Shaw has said publicly that he doesn't drink.

Two people can be inappropriate - Mick - 08-23-2015

At what point does Pat Haden say he's had enough with his d-bag of a coach?

Re: Cutty Sark! - SUBuddha - 08-23-2015

Ok as a 40 something Seattle native I will share that some of my friends who are now UW donors have made comments suggesting that Sark is a drinker and has made some very poor decisions around women, leading possibly, and allegedly, to his current marital situation. All I will say as fact though is I can't stand Sleazy Steve.

It won't be the first coach who was a loathsome scum to his family. The world adores them, so they think they don't have to abide by common morality.

Re: Cutty Sark! - akCard - 08-23-2015

PAX Prime starts on Friday here in Seattle so this week was already going to have an awesome ending but this - THIS!!! - is a WONderful way to start it off.

It's like Christmas, your birthday, an anniversary, a great Holiday dinner with family and friends, a fantastic powder day at Kirkwood (remember when it actually snowed in Tahoe??), a box full of puppies *and* kittens, your favorite song playing on the radio, and a hug from the Baby Jeebus all in one.

I've never had one and don't plan to but an attorney fried who makes his living partly defeating this charge tells me the first thing is to challenge the accuracy of the breathalyzer.  He also says, FWIW, to always refuse a field sobriety test, demand to speak to an attorney, etc.  the point is to delay the breathalyzer or blood test long enough for you blood alcohol level to drop below the legal limit.  He quickly adds that the magic word for beating a DUI is "taxi."

A lawyer acquaintance of mine says that the key is to keep challenging the arresting officer's abilities until he is furious. Then, during summation ask the jury, "Who do you want to believe, this angry officer with an agenda or this innocent citizen who only wants to see justice served."

That's if the arresting officer shows up.  Sometimes they just don't and you win.
