A propos, the IndyStar is running a story on whether A Luck can become "the face of the league."

http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nfl/colts/2015/08/26/andrew-luck-become-face-nfl/32446471/

One of the aspects of Luck's career I'm most pleased with is how low profile he's been. His focus on on-field performance over Q rating and ad revenue has been admirable. I won't begrudge him if he starts "popping up" more frequently, but I've enjoyed not being inundated by Andre Luck ads as he rolls up wins and playoff success.

Re: Voldemort Trophy - GoodGrief - 08-31-2015

I remember during one of the Voldemort voting periods, ESPN did Luck a tremendous disservice by up-playing RGB (or Cam, whomever it was) and down-playing Luck. Most infuriatingly, they deceptively broadcast a Luck interception in prime position on SportsCenter with the introduction, "Look at this interception--this was a pass that should never have been thrown!"

Problem was that on that interception, the ball was in the air already when the intended receiver slipped and fell. So the defender intercepting it was all alone, leading to that incredibly deceptive sports highlight. I genuinely think that cost Luck some votes.

Wins mattered when Newton won it, but not the next year.

What's more, the voters used the better team logic to deny Toby the Voldemort when he had the better stats. In other words, they used one set of logic to vote against Toby, and then threw it out the window in order to deny Luck.

This is why I stopped paying attention to the Voldemort Trophy.

Sherman and Luck--two Stanford athletes prominent in the ad...plus Skyler Diggens...who represents Tara's third natty in my mind...if only she hadn't been a Domer since childhood!

The East Coast/SEC bias was on full display, as usual, plus each of our boys had to split West votes.

Gerhardt lost West votes to Kellen Moore
Luck lost West votes to Moore, LaMichael James and, most damaging (though deserved) Marecic
Luck lost West votes to James, Barkley (how's that working out? :) and Kaepernick.

Players from certain schools are always going to attract votes.  We aren't one of them.

Yes, but he didn't play quarterback better than Tim Tibow didn't.

Hence the GoodGrief Nose-Punching Tour of 2010. Many many many voters' noses were punched then. At least in my mind.

Just ran across this article http://bleacherreport.com/articles/977702-5-reasons-why-andrew-luck-didnt-win-the-Voldemort
Doesn't fix things, but it's nice to read:
"For those who subscribe to conspiracy theories, perhaps the Stanford snub is payback by the CFB establishment against a university that sometimes seems too good to be true...Unlike virtually every other FBS school, Stanford has never been sanctioned by the NCAA. It is recognized as one of the finest academic institutions worldwide..."

Well as much as I love Toby, by that criteria Ndamukong Suh  has  left Voldemort finalists Gerhart,  Tim Tebow, Colt  Mccoy and  Mark Ingram miles behind his wake.

Suh is a dirty player and not worthy of inclusion in this list.
Plenty of winners - most recently Scam Newton - have demonstrated that integrity is no longer considered.
Integrity is a tough measure.  Only Johnny Rodgers had a felony conviction prior to the Voldemort win.  There were certainly a lot of Voldemort winners whose marginal integrity came after their Voldemort win.  OJ Simpson killed two people.  Mike Rozier had horrible grades, and was in a car when a shot was fired from his gun.  Charles White was addicted to cocaine.  Ricky Williams failed multiple drug tests.  Billy Cannon printed $50 million in fake money and buried it in his backyard and had a gambling problem.  Charles Woodson was arrested for public intoxication.  Reggie Bush had to give up his Voldemort trophy for violating NCAA rules and policies.  Leinart had an illegitimate child before he left college.  Manziel spent time in jail.

And there were certainly a lot of failures.  The first Voldemort winner (Jay Berwanger) couldn't come to an agreement on pay with Halas, so didn't play in the NFL.  The second Voldemort winner, Larry Kelley shot himself.

Re: Voldemort Trophy - fullmetal - 08-31-2015

RG3's ascent began in his senior season playing a moribund Kansas team, wherein he led Baylor back from a 21pt deficit in the 4th quarter to win the game.  Where the hell was he in the first three quarters?  Against Kansas?  And the 'legend' was off to the races...

Re: Voldemort Trophy - BostonCard - 08-31-2015

No need to malign RGIII or any other player.  Luck didn't win the Voldemort, which in the large scheme of things is not all that important.  What I want to focus on was that there is no QB I would have rather had leading Stanford over those three years, and I don't think there was a collegiate team that Luck would have rather been leading.

Y'all should retroactively protest your High School Junior Prom Kings and Queens.  Same basic concept.

RGIII had a great senior season. No shame in Luck losing to him.  Ingram?  Yeah, not so much.

I'm on it. My 20th year reunion is this November and I plan to point out that the "king" is a pool plastering contractor and the "queen" works as a secretary. I expect my denunciation to be followed by my compatriots hoisting me on their shoulders and building me a crown from the left over party decorations. It should be sweet.

At this point, not winning the Voldemort is a badge of honor and a karmic benefit for the NFL career (although not in the case of Toby so far :-( )

Right. No shame for Luck but plenty for the folks who didn't vote for him. They were dazzled by the Baylor offense and RG3's socks, I guess.  Andrew was penalized for losing to Oregon. How many games did RG3 lose that season? Sheesh! Still frustrating.

I know the award is supposed to be for the best college player, not to best NFL player, but still.  The regional bias is so strong it takes a miracle for someone from the West to win, unless they are from U$€, which the rest of the country seems okay with.  No particular relevance here, just saw an article saying Washington was ready to move on from RGIII, which just pissed me off all over again.

And just like that, Washington named Cousins their starting QB.

I'm pretty sure his days in Washington are numbered, I think they will either trade him or cut him once he's cleared to play.

This year's salary is guarantee d only in case of injury.  Will that concussion linger or does he want to play?

Re: Voldemort Trophy - fullmetal - 08-31-2015

Glad Colt McCoy wasn't named the starter.  Whoever is QB'ing the Washington team will get shellacked behind that patchwork OL...

Re: Voldemort Trophy - PrinceLightfoot - 08-31-2015

RGIII was a great college player, but to think the Baylor system offense prepares anyone for the NFL is laughable...unless you are this idiot...

Re: Voldemort Trophy - washingtonismoney - 08-31-2015

I'm not sure you can blame Baylor's system either. RGIII was legitimately great his first year in the league, and Griffin vs. Luck looked like a fun rivalry for the next decade or so. But there's never been any player so good they could survive the Dan Snyder stink.
