After the Greatest.Upset.Ever, What's YOUR Deal, and the 3OT game, I know that truly ANYTHING is possible in the Mausoleum.

I think Stanford needs to bottle up the way it played from 20 mins in until 10 mins left and play that way for 60 minutes if it wants to have a legit shot at winning.  I do think U$C hasn't really played anybody of significance and their egos are big time swollen.  But they have enough talent that if they get their engine going and Stanford can't respond then this could be revenge of What's YOUR Deal.

Trick plays!
More Flea flickers!
Statue of Liberty!
Hook and Lateral/Ladder
Fumblerooski!
Fake punts from inside the 40!
More of Love, CMac, and Barry J doing that thing where they run really really fast!

That's what I'd like to see. I'd actually settle for just the last one as long as it happens a lot.

I'm pretty sure we'd ALL be pretty happy with a lot of that last line. I BELIEVE!

Stanford's pass defense against Kessler has been terrific.  What seems to work is tight man-to-man coverage on their WRs, one deep Safety and one close to the LOS that can occasionally blitz, or go into coverage as the nickel blitzes.  I think it is smart to trade tighter coverage without as much help to have another Safety close to the LOS in the run game.

As for Stanford's offense, who knows.  I'll say it will need more Irwin, more TE involvement, and more Love. Oh, and no OL gaffes.

Stealing a line from the USMNT, but I'm cautiously optimistic for several reasons.

(1) USC may be overrated. They haven't played anyone worth noting this year, they were pretty good, but not amazing, last year, and they lost their three best players to the NFL.

(2) Despite our offensive woes last year, we moved the ball well against them and just couldn't get in the end-zone. It's not like our scheme was ineffective, and they had a lot of trouble against our D.

(3) We've shown signs of explosiveness on offense that simply were absent at this point in the year last year.

The big differenc emakers for me are if our D-line will be able to hold up at the end of the game against their run game, and if we can avoid shooting ourself in the foot with stupid penalties.

Thorson was a redshirt freshman. A difference, but doesn't undermine your point.

After the nonsense last year, our boys are simply going to hit their players so hard their AD is going to come down on the field to complain.

Perhaps we should add "dominate time of possession" to the list.  Against UCF, we had the ball 35:35 vs their 24:35.  And improve our 3rd down conversions, which were 6 of 15 in the UCF game.

Kicking game needs to be perfect, both in terms of scoring opportunities and field position.

Kicking cannot really be worse than the last 3 games vs. USC.  Stanford kickers (Williamson and Ukropina) were 2 for 8 in 2012, 2013 and 2014.  Improvement definitely needed here.

I know what I want to see - Stanford need to be able to run the d**n ball and stay out of 2nd and long and 3rd and long situations.  Stanford has gone 15 games without a 100 yard rusher.  Would love to see someone break that streak this week.

Stanford should be 5-0 against SC in the last five contests (just stop and noodle on that one for a minute!).

This year looks to be a lot tougher task for the Cardinal.  SC may not have played good competition yet, but I'm far from convinced that Stanford has, either.  I'm still not buying Northwestern as a good team - see them as mediocre team who game-planned all summer for opener against Stanford and squeaked out a W against a team with a putrid offense that day.

I don't think beating the Trojans is out of the realm of possibility, but it will take far better play from Stanford than we've seen to date, especially on offense.

That's it!  We have been playing crappy in one game, semi-crappy in one game, to lull them into complency!  Now, Friday night, our moles deliver a case of Cutty to the coaches ready room (this is Hollywood, right?) and a bus load of dancing girls and drowning nephews to the players' hotel.  Then, Friday afternoon, we throw off our semi-crappy cloaks, paint our faces, and beat the crap out of the besotted fools.  Harrison, injured though he is, is assigned to babysit Haden.  Easy peasy.

Re: What it will take to beat the #6 team next Saturday - dabigv13 - 09-14-2015

I have been to three Stanford games at the Coliseum.

The scores were 24-23, 55-21, and 56-48 (3OT).

For the purposes of full disclosure in case anybody is planning to bet their house, I will sadly not be attending this weekend's game (damn you, hospital!).

But in the future, take comfort in the fact that when I can set my own schedule after this year, I anticipate going every other year. So we should be able to even the series up roughly by 2060. As long as North Korea or Iran or somebody doesn't nuke us by then, that is.

Oh, and if you're a gambler and can get Stanford and 8 puts, bet the house.

I am the world's worst gambler, genuinely the world's worst.  I think someone could make a pretty good living just by taking the opposite sides of my bets.  So I won't take that, or any other bet.

Based on these two quotes, I'm betting the house.

I don't care what kind of plays Shaw calls as long as they work and are appropriate given down, distance, score, and time remaining.  But mainly, they have to work.

Can Stanford students shake off complacency and rediscover urgency, fire, and passion?  Can the OL fire off the ball and assert their will?  Can the secondary figure out how to hold onto potential interceptions gifted to them?  (I mean seriously, CATCH THAT INTECEPTION--we can't afford to pass up these opportunities.)  Can the DL contain the run and rush the passer?

Free Bryce Love and CMac.  Use them in the short-range game instead of WRs.  Let Hogan throw the deep ball as he can.  Let the TE corps height compensate for Hogan's throwing foibles.

I believe!

Something to feel uneasy about. From LA-based writer Scott Wolf...

Quote:USC defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox probably prefers to face Stanford and its pro-style offense Saturday because he enjoyed success in recent years against the Cardinal. Last year, Stanford scored only one touchdown in a 13-10 loss to USC.

In 2013, Stanford had only two touchdown drives longer than 20 yards and 279 yards of total offense against Washington, where Wilcox was defensive coordinator. And in 2012, Stanford did not score an offensive touchdown against the Huskies.
