One of the Sears/Litchfield cup coaches once told me that they only recruited the very top level athletes, essentially All-Americans or those capable of it.  The rest had better show a whole lotta love to Stanford before they got the NLI.

Re: Softball - Hurlburt88 - 06-05-2017

I see Ohio state let Thad Motta go, obviously a long time after the season ended.  Just hoping...

Re: Softball - Spiny_Norman - 06-05-2017

thought that the softball fans might find this article of interest. It talks about how SEC schools have built their nationally competitive programs with players from California, especially from the southern part of the state.

Interesting.
I noticed the exact same thing about the Oklahoma team last night.

Re: Softball - fullmetal - 06-06-2017

That was a heck of a game.  17 innings.  Oof.

Re: Softball - Cred - 06-06-2017

After a one-month absence -- an absence I had really hoped would be permanent -- the tweeting resumes:

Coach Hanson‏ @RachelKHanson  14 hours ago:

"What. A. Game."

:(

Re: Softball - d4cohn - 06-30-2017

The softball assistant coaching job (replacing Megan Langenfeld) is still vacant after a month. Can't imagine that is good news.

Re: Softball - BobK - 06-30-2017

It implies she left on her own

23 days later a post.  Lol.

Who would want a job for a year ?

Re: Softball - Mick - 06-30-2017

The assistant job position might be filled.  It's no longer posted.

An excerpt from your linked article that I found particularly noteworthy:

"Multiple Florida players cited significant fan interest as a reason they left for Florida. The SEC has five of the top 10 national leaders in average attendance this season. The Pac-12 had two. (Florida was seventh, averaging 1,598; the highest-attended California program, UCLA, was 23rd with 852.)"

Note that not only is Stanford softball of the conference that now plays second fiddle to the SEC in attendance, but the Card's home attendance, despite free admission to the games, ranks in the bottom half of its conference.

Here's a topically related article, this regarding the growth of the Alabama softball fan base:

<a href="http://www.tuscaloosanews.com/news/20110520/alabama-softball-home-attendance-among-nations-best">Alabama softball home attendance among nation's best</a>

(Excerpt from the above article: "The UA coaching staff obtained email lists to contact season ticket buyers from other sports and began a mass electronic campaign to grow the fan base in 2005."

I wasn't aware myself that there are coaching staffs out there actively, directly recruiting fans, in addition to players. Interesting.)

Finally: <a href="https://www.seccountry.com/sec/how-the-secs-investment-in-softball-made-it-the-sports-premier-conference">How the SEC's investment in softball made it the sport's premier conference</a>

Note the common theme that runs through the first article (supplied by Spiny Norman) and this ("third") article:

First article: "The SEC programs, flush with football money, invested part of that in softball."

Third article:: "The SEC is the richest and most powerful conference in college sports because of its gridiron success, and one of the ripple effects of that has been more money for sports like softball."

Re: Softball - fullmetal - 07-05-2017

Someone should ensure that article crosses Muir's desk.

Re: Softball - BobK - 07-10-2017

More please

Re: Softball - d4cohn - 07-10-2017

I hadn't heard anything regarding Coach Hanson, but the Assistant Coach job posting is still on or back on the Stanford jobs page, so obviously, that position is still unfilled.

Re: Softball - OutsiderFan - 07-11-2017

When have you ever read a "coach is leaving" press release/story from a sports operation that made absolutely zero reference to the record of that coach?  Saying nothing kind of says all that needs to be said.

Well it just happened. I had the link ready

I'm beyond thrilled.  Please Jessica Allister come home

Re: Softball - winflop - 07-11-2017

So glad this finally happened - still wondering what took so long and still believe Muir should have fired her the day after the season ended. Now he's months behind on the search for a replacement, with likely fewer choices.
