RE: Class of 2019 - BobK - 08-02-2018

There are more LBer offers inside and outside.    However I am only slightly hopeful of landing another.
Incoming Frosh Lamani Dumani is an inside LBer returning from his mission next summer.  So he’s the 4th

Translation: Don't be surprised if DiCosmo is the only other LB in the class. Latu isn't coming to Stanford, and not likely to get another ILB. Pakola may be shown as a OLB by recruiting services, but he's a DE at Stanford (and probably anywhere else too).

Levani Damuni.

His tape is vicious, and he's got great size. May need a redshirt year to get in form post-mission, though.

New commitment today! High 3* OT (4* by 247sports' own ranking) Barrett Miller brings us to 3 OL in the class thus far.

Very solid offer list and you'll see why after watching this: http://www.hudl.com/v/28HJXV

Moves very well for an OL.

RE: Class of 2019 - OutsiderFan - 08-11-2018

This is a pretty Jekyl and Hyde outlook on the Defensive recruiting class: https://stanford.rivals.com/news/with-focus-shifting-to-the-season-where-does-the-2019-class-stand-

Very good in the back seven positions. Stanford is really loading up at LB over the last two classes. But the program faces the prospect of bringing in just one DL in Josh Pakola, who might be a DE. I get the restrictions, but it leaves you dangerously thin on the DL when there is no true DL in a class. Stanford lost two DTs to injury retirements in a 4 year span. Only now has the shallow depth at DL been ameliorated in that attrition's aftermath.

You need big guys to effectively play the 3-4 defense.  I'd give a scholarship on a reach just to have a big body who can give some other guys some rest if even for a few snaps a game.

RE: Class of 2019 - BobK - 08-11-2018

Who are the two we lost.   I’m thinking three in 4-5 years to retirements maybe ?

Pakola will almost certainly be a DE and having watched him last season I believe true DE.   It will be interesting to see where he plays this season.

We have 9 DL with 3-4 years of eligibility left thus the need for one or less in this class.    And of course we often play
a 2-4-5 defense

Indeed we have. I had always assumed that wasn't by choice, but rather a lack of DL talent. I could be wrong there, however, because UW does the same thing at times. They probably have enough DL bodies to not "need" to do this. So, it can be a choice. Anybody have any "inside" info on this? Choice, or necessity?

Though Pakola isn't making a public commitment until January (with Latu at the Polynesian Bowl), it seems we can pencil him in for Stanford based on publicly available information.

Let's talk LB takes for 2019. I'm assuming Stanford wants four; 2 OLB, 2 ILB, but that is just a guess.
In the fold
OLB: Herron Jr.
ILB: Sinclair

Other seemingly high possibilities*
OLB: DiCosmo

Other possibilities
OLB: Latu

* Considering Pakola as DE

Sinclair is the only ILB recruit I'm aware of other than Kane Patterson who chose Ohio State. Are there any other ILB possibilities on the radar, and who are they?

Latu is going to USC. He seems to be really having a good time there. Heard nothing about us from him.

And Cal fans thought they had a shot because of the Rugby program. :(

ESPN 300 quarterback Tanner McKee has committed to Stanford. Joins ESPN 300 quarterback Jack West in this class for the Cardinal.

Wait what?  Both those guys signed a year ago, and McKee went on a mission.  West should already be on campus.

West indeed is on the roster, wearing #10.

Damned ESPN posted old news the top of their news feed.  My bad for not recognizing it.

Stanford class of 2019 did get a commit this weekend - punter Ryan Sanborn. From Francis Parker HS in San Diego, the alma mater of Tyler Mabry.

Punter who also kicks and has played QB. Nice addition to the Stanford team.

Is the logic behind January 19th decision day because that gives time to have clarity about admission qualifications ?
I ask this question because these two players have been heavily recruited  for awhile now, taken lots of campus visits etc....so it's hard to believe they are waiting for additional offers.

I would guess it is either an admissions issue (waiting for fall semester grades) or they want to come to the Big Visit weekend and see how that goes. Also, some players just prefer to wait until close to signing day to make their decision. Didn't Love wait til signing day to announce? I seem to recall he did.

Several 2019 and 2020 recruits were at the USC game.
