RE: SF Giants 2025 - Mick - 09-28-2025

Some good news at the bitter end. They finished 81-81, so hit .500. Adames hit his 30th home run, breaking a 21 year streak of Giants not having a 30+ home run hitter since Barry Bonds. Adames had 30, Devers finished with 34, Ramos and Chapman had 21. Casey Schmitt had 12 in 2/3rds of a season. Matos had eight in 1/3rd of a season. Jung Hoo Lee led the team in doubles (31) and triples (12) by a mile.

Logan Webb finished 15-11, 3.22 ERA. Led the NL in strikeouts with 224 and innings pitched with 207. Robbie Ray finished 11-8. Landon Roupp won 7. No one else won more than five.

Giants finished 28-30 in one run games. In 10 of those thirty, they gave up unearned runs. Four of the ten, they gave up two or more unearned runs. The difference between playoffs and not-playoffs was rasor thin.

Will Melvin keep his job? At 81-81, maybe. If the players want him back, probably. On the other hand, Posey (and everyone else) wanted to make the playoffs.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Giants - 09-28-2025

A final look at the predicted win totals…

old spanish trail - 92
Phogge - 92
Mick - 90
Cardcrimson - 88
BobK - 87
skip75 - 86
Giants - 83
Leftcoast - 82
triangle2 - 82
lex24 - 80

No one had 81.  However, three of us were close.  Congrats to triangle2, Leftcoast and lex24 for their picks.

And to Phogge and old Spanish trail, thank you for your optimism.  Maybe, next year……

RE: SF Giants 2025 - Mick - 09-28-2025

Stephen Vogt led the Cleveland Indians to another first place divisional finish. That's two first place finishes in two years of managing.

Would Buster want Nick Hundley as a manager?
Could Buster Posey tab unlikely former teammate as next SF Giants manager?

Melvin, BTW, wants to see Verlander return:
SF Giants manager Bob Melvin welcomes the return of veteran pitcher in 2026

Good for Vogt (although I’m not sure what that has to do with the Giants).  As for Melvin, I would imagine that his immediate future will be determined within a couple days.

RE: SF Giants 2025 - BostonCard - 09-29-2025

Could be worse:

New York Mets: $341,050,160 buys 83 wins ($4.11 mm/win), eliminated from the playoffs.

At least the Giants missed the playoffs with just over half the salary ($174.7 mm).

Of the top 10 payrolls, the Mets (2), Astros (6), Texans (7), and Braves (8) failed to make the playoffs.

Best deal, by far, was the MLB leading Milwaukee Brewers (97 - 65) for about a third the payroll of the Mets ($116 mm).  Honorable mention to the 88-74 Cleveland Guardians, who won the AL Central with a payroll just a shade over $100 mm.

Melvin gone. Hope Giants hire a younger more enthusiastic Manager.
Spend money get Vogt. :) I think the pitching coach did well but the new manager gets his staff

Gnats should go after Kotsay. Look at the chicken salad he made with chicken-scat and a horsesAzz owner.

Matt Williams (third base coach) and Ryan Christenson (bench coach) have also been told they will be let go (Susan Schlusser).

Options for manager? Mark Hallberg, current SFG 1B and Posey's teammate at Florida State. Former Posey backup, Nick Hundley. Also, Bochy's contract is up in Texas. Just saying...

Bochy said he's willing to talk to the Giants...and he's 70. But he won a WS when he was 68. But he's 70. He's a Hall of Fame manager. But he went 214-272 his last three years.

Time for someone else. Maybe hire Bruce as a QC expert.

Vogt's not available, but his associate manager, Craig Albernaz might be. And as an added bonus, he was on the coaching staff of the Giants 107-win season, working with Buster Posey.

SF Giants linked to former member of Gabe Kapler's staff for manager opening

And Buster wants Bochy back, but not as manager. Sort of like Dusty Baker, a "manager emeritus" as it were.
(4) Bob Nightengale on X: "Buster Posey says he will talk to Bruce Bochy about role in the organization, but not as manager. If Bochy has managed his last game, it means the 2027 Hall of Fame class will be a black-and-orange party with Dusty Baker, Bochy and Posey all in same induction." / X

Six takeaways from the 2025 SF Giants season, summary if you don't want to read the attached article link:

1. Devers and Adames will be just fine at Oracle. Adames hit 30 HRs, first Giant since Bonds to do so. Devers hit 20 after joining the Giants.
2. Landon Roupp is a legit big league starter. 3.80 ERA in 106 innings. Actually should be better next year, he gave up 10 earned runs in 5 1/3rd innings in his last two starts, resulting from lingering injuries. Take away those two starts, you have a 3.11 ERA.
3. Outfield defense needs to improve. Ramos had 9 errors leading all NL left fielders and -4 Rtot. Jung Hoo Lee had just three errors (4th among NL CFs), 7 assists (third best among NL CFs) and two double plays (3rd among NL CFs), but just average range and a -20 Rtot. Matos had two errors in 30 games in RF and two MORE errors in 22 games in LF, -6 Rtot overall. Drew Gilbert was -3 Rtot. Grant McCray had two errors in just six games in RF.
4. Buster did a good job in making decisions.
5. Bryce Eldridge is better at the plate than I expected in terms of plate discipline (7 walks in 37 ABs), about what I expected for strikeouts (13), not as good as expected for BA (.107), OBP (.297), SLG (.179).
6. We need pitching. A LOT of pitching. Walker regressed, Rodriguez is out for the year. I'd prefer better than Kai-Wei Teng and Carson Seymour. Maybe it's Whisenhunt. I think Miller will step up. Hopefully Tyler Rogers comes back. At one point, we had the third best bullpen in the majors, then regressed. Verlander came on in the second half, but he'll be 43 next year.

Six Takeaways From the San Francisco Giants’ 2025 Season

You do like your short sample sizes.  Eldridge hit eight or nine balls 100 miles an hour or harder. I don’t know if he’ll be on the roster to begin the season next year. But he’ll be there relatively soon. And he’s gonna strike out a ton  I doubt he’s gonna hit for much of an average his first year. But the power will play.  What he did this September generally means nothing. As long as he didn’t look overmatched. And he didn’t.

He is having a bone spur removed. Which also may have been bugging him a little bit. I truly hope that’s not a real problem. If it is – then everything changes.

Just for kicks, here are some numbers from a player’s first partial season. He was called up in August 2016. :

84 AB’s.  42 K’s.  .179.  4 HR’s.

Didn’t look like much. He’s been pretty good ever since.  I’ll let you guess the player.

Yep.  Looking at the player’s career numbers as of today, I would say he is doing ok….

Eldridge’s surgery was Thursday.  He is expected to be fully recovered in eight weeks.

Yeah, I know. It's easy to play that game with very young September callups:

17 ABs, 2 hits, 4 strikeouts, no walks, .118/.118/.118/.235 (Posey)
10 ABs, 2 hits, 4 strikeouts, .200/.200/.300/.500 (Babe Ruth)
34 ABs, 7 hits, 5 walks, 15 strikeouts, .206/.325/.294/.619 (Mike Schmidt)
151 ABs, 36 hits, 23 strikeouts, .238/.286/.298/.584 (Ty Cobb)

On the other hand, Willie Mays, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams, Rickey Henderson, Will Clark, Jack Clark, Bobby Bonds, Barry Bonds, Stan Musial, Harmon Killebrew, Jeff Kent, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons started strong and stayed strong.

As for Eldridge, I'd be very surprised if he doesn't make the major league roster next year and plays 1B / DH with Devers. I imagine that Dominic Smith and Wilmer Flores will be looking for work with other teams next year. Smith is 30, hit .284 and plays a good first base...he'll be employable. Flores, not so sure. He had 71 RBIs, tying a career high, but had the fourth slowest bat speed in MLB. He will turn 35 next season, they don't generally improve.

Verlander, on the strength of his second half (when, for the first time in his career, threw more breaking balls than fastballs) with the 2.60 ERA and given the Giants' paucity of pitching -- I suspect he'll return.

Actually, Mays started out terribly — 1-26 (the one hit being an HR off Warren Spahn).  As the story goes, he cried about his play to Leo Durocher.  In turn, Durocher told him to stick with it, that he was not going to be removed from the lineup.  And, the rest is history.

But who is my example!!!

Yeah, I know. It's easy to play that game with very young September callups:

17 ABs, 2 hits, 4 strikeouts, no walks, .118/.118/.118/.235 (Posey)
10 ABs, 2 hits, 4 strikeouts, .200/.200/.300/.500 (Babe Ruth)
34 ABs, 7 hits, 5 walks, 15 strikeouts, .206/.325/.294/.619 (Mike Schmidt)
151 ABs, 36 hits, 23 strikeouts, .238/.286/.298/.584 (Ty Cobb)

Actually, Mays started out terribly — 1-26 (the one hit being an HR off Warren Spahn).  As the story goes, he cried about his play to Leo Durocher.  In turn, Durocher told him to stick with it, that he was not going to be removed from the lineup.  And, the rest is history.

Right, but we were talking about September call-ups...Mays was given the job in May, 1951...still, he made good contact that month. In 27 plate appearances, he only struck out three times and drew six walks. And he hit .348 in June with a 1.041 OPS. Nine doubles, two triples, six home runs and 26 RBIs.

And, Jeff Kent was not a September call up.

I didn’t check any of the other guys.

Yes, I put it inartfully. My point was that the players I mentioned didn't struggle, they all did great from the jump, whether it was a full season or a call-up. Why I said "On the other hand...":

Willie Mays, 464 ABs, 22 doubles, 20 HRs, .274/.356/.472/.828
Lou Gehrig, 26 ABs, 11 hits, 4 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR; .423/.464/.769/1.234
Ted Williams, 565 ABs, 31 HRs, 145 RBI, .327/.436/.609/1.045
Rickey Henderson, 351 ABs, 33 SBs, 13 2Bs, .274/.338/.336/.675,
Will Clark, 408 ABs, 27 2Bs, 11 HRs, .287/.343/.444/.787
Bobby Bonds, 307 ABs, 10 2B, 5 3B, 9 HRs, 16 SBs, .254/.336/.407/.743   122 OPS+
Barry Bonds, 413 ABs, 26 2B, 16 HRs, 36 SBs, .223/.330/.416/.746   103 OPS+
Stan Musial, 47 ABs, 20 hits, 4 2Bs, .426/.449/.574/1.023
Harmon Killebrew, 13 ABs, 4 hits, 1 2B, 3 RBI, .308/.400/.385/.785
Jeff Kent; 305 ABs, 21 2Bs, 11 HRs, .239/.312/.430/.741, 105 OPS+
Jimmie Foxx; 9 ABs, 6 hits, .667/.667/.778/1.444
Al Simmons; 594 ABs, 31 2Bs, 102 RBIs, .308/.343/.431/.774

Also, Eldridge hit just three balls over 100 mph, but he did hit 11 of his 16 connections over 95 mph, which is the "hard-hit" standard
Bryce Eldridge - Stats - Batting | FanGraphs Baseball

And Jack Clark belongs on the "struggle" list. 17 ABs four hits, .235/.263/.235/.498. Of course, he was 19, younger even than Mel Ott, youngest player in GIants history. He didn't get to over 100 OPS+ until his fourth season, but was 125 OPS+ for fourteen of the next fifteen seasons.

Interesting player, Jack Clark. For the first full ten seasons of his career, he averaged 61 walks and 69 strikeouts per season, had a very discerning eye. for his last five full seasons, he averaged 116 walks (leading the league three times) and 130 strikeouts. It coincided with a power binge, as he averaged 19 HRs for his first 10 seasons, then 28 for his last five.
