Re: Stanford at UCLA Game Thread - Langdude - 09-28-2016

Quote:On the penultimate play, it was Lloyd on Walker who was run right past. Hoffpaiur was on Massington and seemed to have pretty decent coverage. Palma was in no-man's land in the middle of the field which seems a surprising assignment under the circumstances. Reid almost made a mistake, trying for the interception instead of simply knocking away the ball. Fortunately his shoulder hit the ball after he missed the INT completely - he did do a good job positioning himself as a deep center fielder on the play.

Yeah, I knew it was Lloyd in coverage on Walker; not sure why he would even be in the game if the situation called for man coverage on spread formation (which I still question; why not go Cover Two?). I just was wondering why Hoff was out there at all given the other safeties we have and the distance UCLA needed; it seems he's better than Lloyd in man coverage, but not much. But I hear you above when you say that Hoff is better in coverage that I am giving him credit for; I hope you are right. Palma is also not good in man coverage, but he really served no purpose in that defensive formation when UCLA needed big chunks of yardage, unless he was spying Rosen, which may have been the case.

Re: Stanford at UCLA Game Thread - CornFed - 09-28-2016

It is my impression that Hoffpauir has been consistently beaten in man coverage, even by tight ends.  I have several recollections of the opposing receiver streaking down the field w/ Hoff trailing along 3 or 4 steps back.  He is an outstanding tackler, though; particularly in the open field.

I'm still pretty upset about the targeting that we saw by UCLA.  They were trying to hurt our players, IMO.  I think there is a good chance they will win the south.  If we are fortunate to win the north, our boys need to bring the wood and really stomp the Bruins and make it 10 in a row.

ILBs coach Hansen has some comments re: pass coverage:

Quote:...[On] Okereke’s progress: "He's doing a nice job. Every week there's something to clean up and there always will be for everybody. He's taken giant steps each week as well with that in-game, high-pressure experience."

One area Okereke's athleticism might help is in pass coverage, especially in man-to-man coverage situations where the Hansen said the most separation exists between certain players at the position. The group is similar in how well they perform in zone.

But, overall, Hansen wants to see improvement against the pass.

"We want to be a little bit cleaner than we have been the past two games as far as mentally recognizing where we need to end up,” he said. “That's kind of the tough part of having a rotation -- being out for a couple series and going back in, they might be trying something new. If we can apply our concepts and our schemes and skills, we should be able to handle it. I want cleaner eyes and cleaner reactions as a whole. But I always will."
