We survived a Halloween nightmare game in pouring rain in an extremely hostile stadium against statistically the second best team in the Pac-12.  That's what Champions do.  Almost every Championship team has had to survive games like this one.  I'm not saying we will win the Championship, but I will say that tonight's performance does not disqualify us from that dream.

Well said.

Next week will have a very large impact on what I think this team's ceiling is. Colorado played UCLA tough, if we can go to Boulder and blow them out, I'll trust this was a one-off. If not, I don't think we're playoff material.

I thought this was gonna be a blowout.  Wazzu is a good team, and our boys went into very hostile territory in some nasty weather, played like absolute dogmeat in the first half and gutted it out in the second half.  Cougs could easily go 6-3 in conference and finish second in the North.  If they had UCLA I'd say 7-2 was possible but playing down there I don't give them as much hope.  But it could very much depend on which UCLA team shows up that day.

I just know our boys are still undefeated, their playoff hopes are still alive, and they only have one roadie left.

Re: Game thread - DenverCard - 10-31-2015

And I watch these games for fun???  That was four hours of anxiety, doubt, disappointment, frustration...until all of a sudden it was amazing.  Just gut-wrenching, low-grade torture -- even when we were ahead for that brief period.  I didn't read the comments until afterwards, but it's satisfying to see that my experience was universal among us fans.  Now, can we get back to the dominating performances that has Brian Griese gushing about us?

Re: Game thread - BostonCard - 10-31-2015

Most importantly, we are up by two games in the Pac-12 North with three to play; two at home.

Does Leach know how to manage a clock?  WTF?  Snapping the ball with time on the clock when you have a lead and only about 3 minutes left.  Throwing the ball right after your QB got drilled and needed assistance to get to his feet.  Leach Coug'd it.  We'll take it, but he sucks at clock management.

Here's where an inability to run the ball kills you.  226-80 on the ground.  Interestingly, WSU actuallyalmost won the time of possession battle (30:18 to 29:42).

On their last drive, they were running the ball with success.

NO, they did not.  They ran it twice, and got two yards.  0 yards on third and 1 (they then made it on fourth and 1 on a throw), and then they ran for two yards on the last play before the missed field goal.

Did you mean the touchdown drive before?  The ran it five times for 26 yards, though on consecutive plays they ripped runs of 9, 6 and 6 yards.  But then they ran for 3 and 2 yards.

In reality, WSU did win the real time of possession battle, because the clock stops after an incomplete pass, but not after a run. Either way the D is still on the field.  They dominated us with plays run by something like 86 to 59 and outgained us in yardage by over 100. But we won and that's all that counts.

Anyone else have a flashback during the 4th quarter to another amazing comeback win in Pullman?

Re: Game thread - socalstanfan1 - 11-01-2015

I'm not sure how to explain the first half disaster, but part of it might have been some sense of overconfidence.  Having recovered from the loss to Northwestern, and a sluggish first half against UCF, the offense had been on an absolute roll.  Defense had been solid, easy to see how eventually there would be a letdown sometime, where you just think you can't be beaten by the team in front of you that particular week.  If that was the case, then we just survived a very dangerous week, one that trips up a lot of teams during the course of a season.  Let's see how they do next week against what looks to be a rapidly improving Colorado.

Yes, I mean their last drive when they had the lead and only about 3 minutes were left on the clock.  The drive that ended with Meeks' pick.

1st and 10 at WSU 28
(4:54 - 4th) Gerard Wicks run for 3 yds to the WshSt 31
2nd and 7 at WSU 31
(4:10 - 4th) Gerard Wicks run for 4 yds to the WshSt 35
3rd and 3 at WSU 35
(3:51 - 4th) STANFORD Penalty, Defensive Holding (10 Yards) to the WshSt 45 for a 1ST down
1st and 10 at WSU 45
(3:33 - 4th) Luke Falk pass incomplete to Dom Williams
2nd and 10 at WSU 45
(3:27 - 4th) Luke Falk pass intercepted Quenton Meeks return for 9 yds to the WshSt 39

Two runs for 7 yards isn't exactly "running the ball with success".

You're right.  It must have been the fog of war.  But, I still think Leach screwed the pooch with his clock management.

Re: Game thread - indiancardinal - 11-01-2015

Phew... Just so glad to get out of the Palouse with the W and everybody fit to truck on down to Boulder next week!

We faced an extremely ambitious and confident Cougar team on their home turf in the rain, played bad football for a half and still managed to remain unbeaten in the PAC.
I shall be making my daily offerings to the football gods for the rest of the season.

GO STANFORD!

Re: Game thread - dabigv13 - 11-01-2015

Shaw owes me a thank you card for switching into the lucky jersey and hat.

Also, I laughed out loud when Leach was interviewed and said that Falk wasn't injured, he was the same 4.9 40 runner he always was.

Re: Game thread - Sea Loon - 11-01-2015

For a tight game every play looms large, but that stop on the WSU 2pt conversion attempt ended up being pretty big time.
