My reactions to the game:
1) very good, and surprising (to me) effort on defense.
2) offensively, the line was just very poor. ultimately very difficult to win if your linemen are getting ransacked one-on-one. Poor games from Burkett and Bright, by my eye.
3) Costello really needed to keep it on some read-options. Had some frustrating misses. Would've helped if the refs gave us a PI call or two.

Yeah, its college football. Anything can happen.
Flailed when it mattered today. Welcome to Pedestrianville.
Hell probably start Chryst next week for all I know. Maybe it really doesnt matter.

Yeah, when our offense gets up against a decent defense, especially on the road, we just can't get much done. Unfortunately, Costello doesn't seem to be the answer.
Given the stats, we are probably lucky the game was that close.

Love ends up with 69 yards on 16 carries, ending his 100 yard game streak.I almost wonder whether that far away, a draw to Love or a little screen like we ran against USF his freshman year might not have been a better shot at breaking a big one than having Costello try to gun it there.
Then again, they were dropping 8 back so probably wouldnt have gone for a TD.
Rough game.

Regardless of the outcome today, Stanford's Pac-12 title hopes were always going to come down to next week against Washington at home. A three-way tie would give the North to the Cardinal. Stanford needs to defend home-field, and hope either Utah or Washington do the same against WSU. Obviously, beating UDub is going to be a significant challenge, but the team does play better at home.

Speaking of which, Iowa is destroying Ohio State in Ames.
Just looking for some good play the rest of the way. Today they fell down at the most critical moments.

Well, hang on, that seems like a very hasty conclusion. It's one game, in which his offensive line was doing him zero favors. While I'm not sure Costello is the answer, it seems very strange to say he's definitely NOT the answer based on one game.

Right, WSU is a very good defense, and our OL just kinda shit the bed. This team just isn't built to be able to consistently get back from being behind the chains early, but how many times did we have 2nd-and-6 compared to 2nd-and-12? That's a brobdingnagian difference for us.
Costello left some plays on the field, but so did everyone. We just weren't as sharp as we needed to be to overcome the OL getting whipped.
The weird part is that we still control our destiny for the Pac-12 CG, we just need to beat Washington.

It doesnt seem to. O-line got beat badly today.
For whatever reason, we couldnt account for anyone when we attempted to run block.
As for talent, and I know recruiting is imperfect, but Shaws a great recruiter and has pulled in some great classes. Maybe were just young. Or maybe... YOU GO FOR IT ON FOURTH DOWN LATE IN THE GAME WHEN YOU NEED TO SCORE AND JUST GAVE UP A 96 YARD DRIVE.
You know, SOME situational awareness.
Re: WSU Game Thread -

Costello might not be the answer against good defenses, but neither is Chryst or Burns.
Or is there some overarching problem beyond the particular players?

Michigan State just beat Penn State. Too bad Love couldnt take into account the fat that Berkeley didnt show up.

Hey, hasty conclusions are the bread and butter of the internet.
I agree, though, it's probably too early to pass judgement on Costello. He just wasn't the answer today.
Re: WSU Game Thread -

One note. It seems to me this is an unusually unsettled year on offense. Two starting QBs. I'm not sure the same offensive line has started consecutive games. JJ Arcega-Whiteside has missed two and a half games. Love has missed a game. In some ways it's not surprising that when personnel are so inconsistent, the offense is too.

Thanks to the lightning delay for the other game, I missed most of this one on my DVR. When I did watch live, #75 seemed to be having trouble. And we didn't seem to be mimicking the play calls of the teams that beat WSU. Again, I didn't get to watch much, so my impression could be way off.
Re: WSU Game Thread -- WAST 24, Stanford 21 -
ADPATERSON - 11-04-2017
WAZU is a MUCH better team than ORST, especially on Defense. Chryst looked bad against an inferior team.
Cougars were the better team, and still we had a chance. Falk >> Costello > Chryst.Â
And I blame the O-Line against the Cougar front-7 who outhustled the TWU.Â
Humbling
Now 6-3 with #12 WASH, and #3 NDAM remaining with GrubbyBears in between.Â
brobdingnagian difference between going into that 3-game ramp at 7-2 vs 6-3.Â
Now this looks like an 8-4 Foster Farms Bowl season at best.

AS I recall, Burkett had problems against WSU last year (worse against Colorado), as did the whole line. While they were bad this year, it wasn't as bad as last year. Unfortunately, that isn't saying much. It seems WSU likes to attack right up the middle on defense against us, and we have almost no answer for it.

We didn't make the playcalls of the teams that beat WSU because the actual plan is "beat the crap out of Falk". When we were hitting him we started winning. When we stopped, we started losing.
This game was close and all close games have a lot of places where they can turn, but to me the big thing is that our lines are not good enough. DL we suspected wouldn't be very good, but the OL being this disastrous on the road is somewhat surprising. What's the fix for that? I dunno, but it's strange.
Re: WSU Game Thread -

Interesting that Shaw claims KJs poor performance was on him (in presser.) saying they shouldve called more passes, mixed it up more.
Also saying they were one block away on many run plays.
Re: WSU Game Thread -
washingtonismoney - 11-04-2017
Repeated, a second time, that he shouldve given KJ more throws. Said the receivers played well. Said KJ played ok.
Very introspective press conference; blaming himself a lot. Interesting takes there.
