They are professionals. They just want to win. Vitello will be judged on his ability to communicate his vision to the players. No B.S. just a clear definition of the role each player will be expected to play.

The longer it goes, the more likely it is that he stays in Tenn. I think we will hear his decision by Thursday since the Series starts Friday and MLB doesn’t like hiring news to occur during the WS.

I'd still like to see Craig Albernaz, Steven Vogt's associate manager and bench coach get a shot. Vogt promoted Kapler's old interim coach, Kai Correa to major league field coordinator/director of defense, baserunning and game strategy. I'm not sure the Giants even have one of those.

My thoughts - why not? If he could simply get the players to focus on their job while they are on the field, it would be a major step forward. Too many times, we saw fundamental mistakes by the Giants; errors of omission and commission. Clean those up, add Max Scherzer, a fiery competitor and good friend of Vitello (per The Athletic), another starting pitcher and some bullpen arms and suddenly you have a serious wild card contender.
Easy peasy…..
Works for me. I think it's a great idea. How come it's not done yet?
Well, the Scherzer part is going to have to wait because he is on a team that is still playing baseball, since the Seattle Mariners are not allowed to appear in the World Series.

Cant accuse Posey of being risk averse. High ceiling. Low floor. Big risk.
Interesting to say the least.
Regarding Scherzer the FA openings begin 5 days after WS ends.
It would be funny. First Verlander. Then Scherzer. What next? Doug Fister?

In the last year of Buster's career -- the second year that Kapler managed, Posey had skipped the previous COVID season -- 34-year-old Buster Posey had his highest OPS+ season in seven years, and the third highest OBP of his career, second highest overall OPS of his career. Kapler had brought in coaches with interesting and innovative concepts. For instance, they had Buster batting left-handed in the cage to develop swing speed.
Buster called Vitello, 47, "one of the brightest, most innovative and most respected coaches in college baseball" and said that his "commitment to developing players stood out."
Bright and innovative. As Alex Pavlovic says in the linked article, it's a big leap of faith. He mentions that Vitello might find some interesting fixes, pre-game adjustments just as Kapler and his young/inexperienced staff did in 2021. Pavlovic says that If Kapler were given the chance to hire a manager, it might be Vitello, or someone like him. Pavlovic goes on to say that the Giants realized that they let some of Kapler's talent get away when Farhan cleaned house:
- Kai Correa, now bench coach of the New York Mets.
- Craig Albernaz, associate manager (promoted) working as Steven Vogt's #2 in Cleveland, AL Central champs in 2025.
- Donnie Ecker helped the Texas Rangers win a title as hitting coach. Texas went from #20 to #2 in team OPS+ that year.
- Antoan Richardson got credit for helping Juan Soto steal 38 bases.
It never made sense to me that you just dump the people from a 107-win season. Forget about Kapler, he had a talented staff. I think, and Pavlovic clearly thinks that Posey saw how the game evolved, and with Vitello, he's taking the next step.
The two coaches before Vitello finished 5th, 6th or 7th in the SEC East every year from 2008 to 2017. Vitello took over, and went 6th, then 3rd (with their first 40 win season in 14 years), then 15-2 in the COVID season, then won 50, 58, 44, and 60 games, taking the national championship in 2024 and was SEC champs in 2022 and 2024.
I'm excited about this season. There will be some bumps, for sure, but I think they could achieve great things.
Buster Posey taking massive swing by hiring Tony Vitello as next Giants manager

To that point,
Around the Foghorn notes that the Giants may have another Gabe Kapler on their hands.
SF Giants may have another Gabe Kapler on their hands in Tony Vitello
"Obviously, Vitello and Kapler are different people with different personalities, but like Kapler, Vitello has the potential to
be divisive amongst the fanbase. He is a fiery guy who carries the albatross around his neck of never having been involved in professional baseball which is going to rub some fans the wrong way right off the start."

Patrick Bailey won the Fielding Bible Defensive Player of the Year Award. That's the best fielder in all of Major League Baseball. Bailey had one of the most statistically impressive seasons in Statcast history. Over 132 games, Bailey had a Fielding Run Value of +31, the most in a single season by any defensive player since 2018. He had +25 Catcher Framing Runs, the most in any season since 2018.
Fielding Bible
Patrick also won his second Fielding Bible Award at catcher.
The Fielding Bible Awards were created as alternatives to the Gold Gloves. There is a panel of experts, along with substantial statistical analysis.

I've been curious re why so many Bailey passed balls which were totally catchable, especially in the second half of the season.

Good question. He was 1st, 2nd and 2nd in NL passed balls these last three years. At the same time, he was 1st in assists among catchers and second this year and last in catcher double plays. First in games played, so that solves durability. 3rd in putouts as catcher, 4th in errors (down from 1st two years ago). 8th in caught stealing percentage but second most runners caught stealing. That's on the pitchers.
Separate topic, Around the Foghorn opines that Philly's GM is including Bryce Harper in trade talks. Harper's OPS+ from 2022 to 2024 was remarkably consistent (144, 144, 148) but declined to 129 last year. Still robust, he had 32 doubles, 27 HRs in 132 games, ots of injuries. Still stole 12 bases in 14 attempts.
Up until this year, I'd say no thanks. His career splits at Oracle are terrible and they're best in Philly. Except this year, his splits were off the charts at Oracle (in a small sample size). He was better at Oracle than any other park in MLB, and that was against Landon Roupp, Robbie Ray and Justin Verlander. His OPS was 1.313. And his second and third best parks in which to hit were Coors Field and Dodger Stadium. Padres was sixth best.

Anytime one wants to think about acquiring or trading for a player based in part on his numbers against the Giants (or in SF) I have the same answer: Mark Portugal.
Harper cant play OF anymore due to his shoulder. Giants already have a 1B/DH making almost $30 MM a year through ‘33. And of course, Eldridge, the best left handed power hitting prospect they have had since forever, is a left handed 1B/DH. Trading for Harper, who is at approximately $25MM through 2025 would be gross organizational mismanagement.

Yeah, they were two outs away. Plus they had a man on third with one out three times and couldn’t bring him home.
But also you have to give credit to Yamamoto. Got the win in game six going 6 innings on 90 pitches, and then comes back to pitch three innings in game 7. In a series where Ohtani was human, Yamamoto was on another level.

I’m just another bitter Giants fan. I don’t have to give any Dodgers credit!
Isiah Kiner- Falefa is taking a lot of heat. Unfortunately, some of it grossly over the top. But that was horrible base running. He got a short lead off third and he did nothing to extend it. (secondary lead) he then threw his coaches under the bus after the game saying essentially that’s what they told him to do. Which I highly doubt. He takes any kind of a secondary lead – just a step or two as the pitch is being thrown, he scores.
His was far from the only failure. The sad thing is, they were so close to not only beating the Dodgers, but for Blake Snell being a losing pitcher in three World Series games. Which may have been a record. Snell is my second least favorite Ex-Giant of all time. Bobby Murcer is easily number one. Murcer once famously made the comment “I never played for the Giants.” But actually, it’s Snell that should’ve made the comment. Because he never did play for the Giants. He played solely for a contract. The one happy thing I’ll take out of the World Series is that he stunk.

Murcer was both a testy creep and preferred to remain a Yankee. He fought against playing RF for the Yankees, then told Gabe Paul he could accept playing RF if it meant he could be a lifelong Yankee, Paul said there was no way he would be traded, then three days later he was traded to San Francisco.
He did well as a Giant, made the All Star team, but his power was noticeably dwindling and he only hit 11 HRs during his second SF season. Of his three teams (NYY, Cubs, SFG), he actually had the best stats for SF (best career BA, OBP, OPS+) and had a big raise from 1975 to 1976. At least they got Bill Madlock in exchange for Murcer and some minor leaguers. Madlock had won consecutive batting titles, and did well with the Giants.
The Giants got Portugal just as he lost his skills. He went 18-4 for Houston in 1993, then 10-8 for the Giants, his ERA ballooning from 2.77 to 3.93, although his WHIP was virtually identical, going from 1.303 to 1.311. But his home run rate tripled.

I wonder how the end of game 6 weighed in the players' and coaches minds.
I'm sad because I'm a Jays fan, and you are right... there were so many chances to win it in Game 6 or Game 7. But it was an incredible series either way. Unbelievable tension that with the last batter of the game, the game could have ended with a Blue Jays championship or a Dodgers championship.
