Given that neither the Indiana Pacers nor the Oklahoma City Thunder have won an NBA championship, this year’s NBA finals are guaranteed to produce a first-time NBA champion.  Prior to 2025, who was the most recent first time NBA champion team?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - PAsportsfan - 06-08-2025

Raptors

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 06-08-2025

More recent than the raptors, who won their first championship in 2019.

Hang on a second.  OKC won a title prior to their move from Seattle (1979). Saying that franchise hasn’t won a title to date is like taking down all World Series flags from Oracle Park that were won by the franchise before the move to SF.

Fair complaint; this was from the Economist so not exactly their core competency.  I, too, would consider the championship won in Seattle to count.

Regardless of the bad question, the answer is still the Denver Nuggets, a mere two years ago.  There are 10 franchises that have never won a championship (the list does not include the Thunder).  Aside from the Pacers, who are the other 9 championship-less teams?

BC

Another one… the Edmonton Oilers are in the Stanley Cup Finals, and if they win, will break a 3+ decade drought.  No Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup since…?  Who was the team and when did they win the last Stanley Cup by a Canadian team?

Montreal 1993 (Hockey is my #2 favorite sport after baseball). And speaking of Edmonton, the best rendition of a country’s national anthem in any sport is easily the Oilers.  The fans do a beautiful job after a great lead-in by the hometown singer who performs the song while standing in front of his seat in the arena.

What was the most extreme aggregate run differential in a World Series?  What was special about that series?

My first thought is the 1960 World Series in which the Yankees crushed the Pirates multiple times but lost the Series on Mazeroski’s Game 7 HR in the bottom of the ninth.  I believe it was the first Game 7 walk-off HR in WS history.  And yes, Tony Kubek still has a sore throat. :)

One other note - while it could be an apocryphal tale, years ago, I read an article about the HR in which it was stated that the part of the Forbes Field left field brick wall over which Maz’s HR flew is behind a bar somewhere in Pittsburgh.

PAsportsfan 1958 Hawks beat the Celtics to win the NBA title. Bob Pettit with 50 points

Any more guesses on the Dodger sent to the minors?

That a way Terry Tommy LaSorda. I got to tslk to him once when he was at a Stanford Baseball game. Fun comversation.

Name the two players, pitchers, who won the Rookie of the Year, MVP and Cy Young. Not in the same year.

Very impressive.  The Pirates/Yankees 1960 World Series is the correct answer.  What’s amazing is that the Yankees outscored Pittsburgh 55-27, a record both for total runs scored and for the aggregate run differential, and lost.

New York won games 2, 3, and 6 by 16-3, 10-0, and 12-0, respectively (38-3 in aggregate).  However, they lost the remaining games 6-4, 3-2, 5-2, and 10-9 (24-17 in aggregate).
