Why is it so hard to accept Stanford doesn't offer the same opportunities for WRs as other schools? It's not a slight against Stanford, it's just a reality. No, Stanford doesn't feature WRs as much as other teams do. Neither does Georgia Tech. Neither does Wisconsin. That's why you usually don't see elite WR prospects choosing these schools. This isn't to say a WR can't get opportunities to succeed at these schools, it's just less likely they will get them.

Because that's not what you first wrote. To quote your first post on this issue:
Quote:Hard to imagine why any top WR would want to come to Stanford. WRs just don't get featured in Shaw's offense. But if he wants to come, would be great to have. Wedington, St. Brown, Wilson, Fehoko, Bowman, and Higgins would be quite a WR corps.
(emphasis mine) You made an overly generalized statement that was demonstrably false in a year when JJ Arcega-Whiteside is being featured as one of the top two wide receivers in the Pac-12. And then you doubled down when you were called out on it.

They don't. Sure 1-2 guys might get opportunities at Stanford, but that doesn't equate to much for a WR corps.
Right now, Alabma has 4 WRs with at least 20 catches. Stanford has two. Cal (with terrible QB play) has 5 WRs with at least 10 catches. USC has 4 WRs with at least 15 catches. Stanford has two. Should I go on? How about the schools Higgins is considering other than Stanford?
Florida has 5 WRs with at least 10 catches. Texas has three WRs with at least 18 catches. Stanford's #1 has 37, #2 has 34 and #3 has 6. But I'll admit, if you count Parkinson as a WR, he has 11 catches. Still less WR catches than most other programs.

Higgins is apparently an outstanding student. He also has a JJAW type build. Given Stanford's elite academics and how JJAW has been doing him choosing Stanford would seem to make sense.

At this point we are talking past each other and just going around in circles. Your argument basically is boiling down to "we don't feature wide receivers except for the two wide receivers we do feature".
I'll nickname it the "no true wide receiver" fallacy.

Not many. That's a lot.
There is WSU.
At this point Stanford throws the ball a higher percentage of the time than most teams. Total attempts are somewhat smaller as we play slowly, but not a lot. Stanford is averaging 31 attempts per game. The Pac 12 ranges from 34.6 to 28.1 - except for WSU at 53.6. Stanford ranks a little higher at completions (thus receptions) per game. [But I don't give numbers because that would require me to calculate.]
The only difference I see in distribution is that Stanford throws more to TEs, though as you noted Parkinson is largely a TE by name only. There is a big drop off in catches from #2 WR to #3 WR because of coaches' evaluation of the players, not because of type of passing game.
All of which mostly agrees with you as I read your posts.

That's a fair criticism. There are teams like WSU and Texas Tech, and perhaps a couple more (NC State and probably some G5 teams), but these are probably the exception that prove the rule. You are right that most teams don't go too much beyond four or maybe five deep at wide receiver (defined as catching an average of at least one pass per game).

I think the WR thread is getting a little tired so I will raise a new topic.
On the small chance that Costello isn't around next year (goes pro or tears an ACL) and no likely incoming frosh QB with the Hilsinki news today, would Stanford be in the market for signing a QB on the waiver wire, I mean the grad transfer program? With an oft-injured Mills, a redshirt frosh West, and former walk-on Richardson, it seems like we would want an experienced QB on the roster next year and there are often a handful of grad transfers available.
RE: Class of 2019 -
BostonCard - 10-24-2018
Bobk has suggested we still might be looking at an athlete type QB (as a freshman, not a grad transfer), though I am not sure how much of that is that is wishful thinking on his part. Can't find his post, though.

Hard to imagine why any top WR would want to come to Stanford....
Let's ask Trent Irwin.
https://stanford.rivals.com/news/stanford-and-costello-looking-to-mr-reliable-more-often
Quote:Do you ever look at a team like Washington State and think of what it would be like to be in that offense?
"I take myself as a route runner. That's what I pride myself on. They do get a lot of targets, for sure, and a lot of stats. But they don't run a lot of routes. The routes don't apply to the NFL and the scouts do know that (when) looking at it. You have to take it from both perspectives. One of my best buddies was a receiver at Washington State, Gabe Marks. He holds the record for most receptions and yards. Everyone's goal in the end is to play in the NFL. In that sense you have to find where you fit in. I think as a route runner I fit in better here to be able to express my abilities. It's a give and take. You look at both situations."
When you say the routes here are more comparable to the NFL what do you mean?
"A lot of it is rub routes. A lot of it is little run, mesh routes or throw a little bubble here and there. The NFL is more pro style where they run the ball or pass the ball to run. They have to have both attacks."
Since Irwin brought it up, here are Gabe Marks' NFL stats:

That would be a nice problem to have as it would require him to light it up against some big time competition over the rest of the season (i.e. Pac12 Championship and Rose Bowl). Darnold really developed his reputation in a few game stretch at the end of his sophomore year especially in the Rose Bowl. It could happen to Costello. He has the toools.
Let's beat WSU and UW and get to the Pac12 title game. If we win the next two, we can lose Big Game or UCLA or OSU and still assure a berth in the Pac12 title game.
