Re: Class of 2017 - OutsiderFan - 08-23-2016

Rivals gives Davis Mills a 5th star despite late Summer injury.
https://stanford.rivals.com/news/new-rivals100-stanford-positioned-for-a-historic-class

Stanford seems likely to sign #3 (Sarell), #19 (Mills), #25 (Little), and #60 (Parkinson) on the Rivals 100.

There are quite a few other Rivals Top 250 guys to round out the class.

In looking at the Rivals Top 28 (5 stars) specifically, Stanford has put effort into recruiting 9/28 on the current list.  Three have already been admitted, and the others are DB Jeffrey Okudah (#10), DB Darnay Holmes (#15), OG Wyatt Davis (#18), OLB Jaelen Phillips (#24), and ILB Nate McBride (#28).

Drukarev didn't mention any of these guys in that story linked, but does Stanford have a shot with any of them?

Wyatt Davis is committed to Ohio State.
Jaelan Phillips is committed to UCLA, and I hear he's telling people on the UCLA side that there's no way he's recommitting.  He's actively recruiting others to come to UCLA.
Nate McBride seems to be a strong Georgia lean.
Okudah I think is going to go to Ohio State?
Darnay Holmes is probably our best chance, but a small chance.  I think a place like UCLA or Michigan more likely for him.

No shot at Okudah or Davis. Still recruiting the other three (possibly no longer with McBride), but all are longshots. I'd say most likely to end up at Stanford would be Phillips, Holmes, McBride in that order. But I'd be surprised if a single one of them did; Phillips will probably stay committed to UCLA, Holmes might join him there, and McBride will almost certainly stay in the southeast.

On the other hand, we probably lead for both Sarell and Little (though Texas fans seem to think they lead for Little, so who knows).

I would say it also depends on how we are doing this year. If we are doing extremely well (ex: national championship), then anything is possible. And if we are not doing well, everything could be in danger...

Re: Class of 2017 - OutsiderFan - 08-24-2016

I think Stanford has reached the point in its program's evolution that even if one year is disappointing, it isn't going to impact recruiting very much.  Not only can Stanford be forgiven for struggling a bit in the even years given the schedule, but now  - with football injury more of a concern than in the past, and the economic realities of the modern economy - more than ever before, the value of the Stanford education plays a major role in attracting top football talent to the program.  Most importantly, it has been proven that Stanford can win conference championships and be a playoff contender.

That seems reasonable. If we have a "down year" of 6-8 wins, we should be able to maintain recruiting momentum. We're now in year 7 since Toby's break out season in 2009. high school players don't really know a world where Stanford isn't a perennial top 25 player (the 2014 blip aside). I wonder what two down years in a row would result in.

Admissions doesn't care how many stars a recruit has. The percentage of 2, 3, 4, and 5 star recruits that can get admitted are the same. But, the pool of 5 star recruits is much smaller. It is just a matter of time though. Akina is magnet for defensive backs.

I wasn't aware Dalman had a scholarship offer:

Betting a walk on but a great get.

Re: Class of 2017 - donkey687 - 08-30-2016

My guess is that he was offered and jumped on it. He had Pac 12 offers from UW, CU and UA plus a Michigan offer.  He seems like a solid 3 star.

Does his Dad end up returning to the Farm as an OL coach again? He seemed to tire of Harbaugh and wanted to spend time with his family.  Could he be ready to return? Bloomgren may get a head coaching offer after this season.

Re: Class of 2017 - BobK - 08-30-2016

Ms Dalman works in the athletic office so if Dad wants to be close 😎

I imagine it probably depends on whether he has more kids.  I could imagine him coming back once all his kids finish at Palma.

To clarify, that's Drew Dalman's older sister; Chris Dalman's daughter (for a second I thought it was Chris' wife).

Is that headline correct?

Which part?  His father Chris played for Stanford from 89 to 92.

Quote:He was a four-year starter for Stanford and a member of two bowl teams during his collegiate playing days. Dalman was a junior on Stanford's 1991 Aloha Bowl squad coached by Denny Green that finished the season with an 8-4 mark and was the third-highest scoring team in school history. As a fifth-year senior on the Cardinal's 1992 team coached by Bill Walsh, he helped lead the squad to a 10-3 record and a victory over Penn State in the Blockbuster Bowl.

Hope they aren't rushing him back.
