Hard to imagine Deion Sanders ever getting topped, but that would do it.

I hope Keenan Reynolds from Navy makes the finalist list, just so that he flies straight from the Army-Navy game to New York in a helicopter. That would be be about as badass as his game helmet. (More badass if he flew it himself, but he isn't qualified.)
California has one-eighth of the U.S. population, so CMac should win in a landslide. ;)
Oh man, Reynolds flying himself in a chopper from the game to the ceremony, in full pads, would be literally the best thing ever.

Not enough time, I know, but how about steaming into New York harbor on a destroyer?

Of the last eight QBs to win the Voldemort, three are white (Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford and I guess Football Johnny); four are black (Troy Smith, Cam Newton, RG III and Jameis Winston, and Marcus Mariota is half-Samoan. The last white RB to win the Voldemort was Penn State's John Cappelletti, in 1974.

Hats off to McCaffrey for a great, great season. He's probably the most dangerous player Stanford has had in open space since Glyn Milburn or maybe longer. I just question the Voldemort credentials of any RB who comes out on short yardage plays. Not just goal line, but 3rd/4th and 1 as well. The deficiency was not much of a problem for Stanford this year because Wright was able to handle the short yardage duties, but if we're just looking at the value of one player to the team, short yardage appears to be an important gap in McCaffrey's skill set. One yard runs don't make too many highlight reels, but if I could trade McCaffrey's punt/kick return skills for Wright-like short yardage skills, I would do it in a heartbeat.Â

Yes, but I do not like at all that this even enters the discussion.when the hell will we get over this nonsense? A (very) elderly friend of mine commented after watching the game, "Stanford is all white players. Don't see that much anymore." I just smiled at him. I am not getting into it with an 87 year old.

I disagree on all counts. First, I don't know that McCaffrey doesn't have the short yardage skills you're talking about. Second, when you have an exceptional player like Wright who does (or also) have those skills, why not use him? One of the things that make McCaffrey so amazing is that he hasn't accumulated his numbers on a one-horse team (looking at you, Alabama.) he pretty much was last Saturday but not all season. While we do have a trancendent star we have many talented players and the staff puts them in positions to be successful. When McCaffrey breaks one to the 1 or 2 the only reason to keep him in there is if you have no one else who can do the job or you are looking to pad his stats. We don't play that way and I'm glad. Did you knock Luck because he didn't throw 60 passes/game and amass 4,000 yard seasons? Yes, he would have looked better. Maybe actually won the damn Voldemort. But the team would have suffered. Not good.

Plus if we're going to knock CMac for short yardage situations, that more than cancels out Bama not using Henry for receiving, punt returning, kick returning, throwing on reverses, etc.

McCaffrey is already getting 40+ touches a game. You want him to take another 5-10 carries a game from Wright?! As it is I cringe that we are playing with fire putting that much of a load on our most valuable offensive player this year and next. While it surely hurts his Voldemort chances to lose so many touchdowns to Wright, I think Shaw did the right (no pun intended) thing to use the short yardage carries as an opportunity to give McCaffrey some rest. Wright had a lot of success in that role and you can leverage McCaffrey's skillset more efficiently--his ability to break brobdingnagian gains on every touch.Â

No surprise, McCaffrey is one of the three Voldemort finalists.

Also, I would think those short yardage carries, especially near the end zone, are brutal on the body. I was very happy with the idea that Wright was leaping over the pile and the slamming to the ground. Not super sure I want a player responsible for 3,000+ APY going through that grind for one yard when the team has someone else quite capable of getting that yard.

Potentially. I'd feel better if Cook or Elliot were also in there, though maybe Elliot's votes went to McCaffrey...
Also, sad for Reynolds that he won't be in NY, though I don't think his season is necessarily that impressive, his career and story certainly are.

Yea, I just gotta chirp in here. I think TrumpCard is mistaking inability with calculated inopportunity.
Given McCaffrey's prodigious contributions on special teams and offense, it made sense for Shaw to get him off the field in situations that would not hurt the offense. Unfortunately for his statistics, the best situations were our goal line plays. Wright has special talent in goal-line situations, both leaping and bouncing, and everyone in the stadium knows what's going to happen (can you say JUMBO!!!). These are the perfect situations to pull McCaffery, giving him a break and minimizing exposure to the ligament tearing inertia inherent in those short yardage goal line plays. I'm certain McCaffery could be as effective as Wright, but why run that risk?Â
Most, it not all, of Wright's TD's could have gone to McCaffrey. But it was to the teams benefit to use Wright. Unfortunately, Voldemort voters may see his overall TD numbers as a negative. And if they do, the just werent paying attention.

I think we're runner-up again, if I can be so presumptive as to say "we." All three finalists are sophomores. Yikes! Non were pre-season favorites (remember Kessler and Elliott?) but next year all three will have targets on them. Should be interesting. Maybe this will get Stanford a couple of day games next year?

Exactly. And reading McCaffrey's stats Sunday morning isn't the same as watching the games. Maybe his performance this year will get us more day games next year. Silver lining? On a seperate thought, I bet he puts on 8 - 10 lbs of muscle by the start of next season. Remember, he is not yet physically mature (by normal measures, which may not apply :). They boy/man has a ways to go.
