I think it's a reason to prefer Ohio State, if your goal is to get national attention. For one thing, I don't think Ohio State is THAT much better than Iowa. Our chances of beating Ohio State are not meaningfully less that those of beating Iowa. The important thing would be the drama surrounding the upset. Upsets get a ton more air time than games that go according to script. I would love the hype.

The only think I like about Stanford v. Iowa compared to Stanford v. Ohio State is that no one will say Iowa lacks motivation entering the game.
If it had been Ohio State, I'm sure that would have been one storyline--a dispirited Buckeyes squad sucking it up to play for pride in the puny Rose Bowl with half the squad worried more about their draft outlook than the outcome.

At this point, it's a done deal; we are playing Iowa. No need to worry about a hypothetically better match-up, since that is something a team we beat can concentrate on.

Gifting Iowa a birth in the Rose Bowl was the committee's way of giving Kirk Ferentz a lifetime achievement award. Could Iowa beat Ohio State? Of course. Which team is better? Ohio State. So why would Iowa be ranked ahead of Ohio State? Because the committee is composed of a bunch of people who respect what Kirk Ferentz has done in 15 years at Iowa, and this year, and feels like he should be rewarded.
I was at the end of the year banquet for the football team when Iowa was announced as the opponent...I couldn't say people were happy. In fact, I would say that the excitement was sucked out of the room.
The player I was seated next too said he had no clue about Iowa and was clearly disappointed that he would not have the chance to prove himself against the players of Ohio State. The player on the opposite side of the table felt the same.Â

Stomp Iowa and Stanford will vanquish the Big Ten's aura of superiority this year.Â
The narrative:Â The Big Ten was better in the first few weeks (NU over Stanford, MSU over Oregon), but the Pac-12 is clearly better now; Stanford dominated the nearly B1G champion, so probably beat the champion too, and probably deserved to be in the playoff after all, even with 2 losses.
That would be good enough for me.

This is not good. Bowl games are often decided by which team wants to be there to play a given opponent more. Then again, Iowa may be just as non-plussed to play Stanford, having just missed the playoff, when they controlled their destiny.

It would be profoundly disappointing if our players weren't excited about playing in the Rose Bowl, no matter who the opponent was. I hope Shaw beats that attitude out of them over the next few weeks, and that it was an anomaly in the room. Iowa may not be a blue-blood, and they very well may not be the best B1G team we could have faced, but they will be motivated and come to play, and we need to match that.

I wouldn't like for anybody from Iowa to see this :|.

Precisely this. I'm confident that our coaching staff will make our players experts in what Iowa does well (and how well-coached they general are) over the next few weeks. I expect our captains will do the same, and Hogan will know that he's in a great position to boost his draft stock with a good showing against a defense that seems vulnerable to the pass, especially in the middle of the field using TEs.Â
If McCaffrey loses the Voldemort? Going off on Iowa's stout run defense is a heck of a way to show he deserved it.Â
Our DL and LBs tired of hearing that we're soft against the run? Shut down a team built around running the ball down your throat.Â
I'll forgive our players a little confusion or even disappointment when they first heard about the matchup, because Ohio State won it all last year and has tons of NFL-caliber talent on the roster, while Iowa isn't as well-known or explosive athletically. I get that. But knowing the caliber of men in our locker room and on our coaching staff, I'm guessing that momentary hesitation ends right now. And if Coach Shaw detects a whiff of that in bowl practices, I'm guessing he'll run it out of them fairly quickly.Â

Don't know who those players were, but I'd be willing to bet large amounts of $$$ that none of them was Kevin Hogan. Assuming these guys aren't just making up all of the things they say about Hogan as a leader, etc., we should be okay. I can't imagine there is anyone on either team who personally would want to win this Rose Bowl -- regardless of the opponent -- more than Hogan, and I assume that feeling will be effectively communicated as necessary. If his 36th [37th?] career victory is his SECOND Rose Bowl win, the "yeah, but..." phrase should be gone forever.

Three Conference crowns. Two Rose Bowl trophies. Most career wins ever. Top THAT no Stanford quarterback who has ever worn the uniform. "Yeah, but I don't like his delivery." Puhleeez.

The numbers say that Stanford has a significantly better chance of beating Iowa.
According to Sagarin's Predictor, Stanford would be a 3-point underdog to Ohio State, which translates to a 42.6% chance of winning. Stanford would be a 5-point favorite over Iowa, which translates to a 64.1% chance of winning.
The difference between a 42.6% chance and a 64.1% chance is meaningful, I think.

I want to WIN the damn game (regardless of opponent).
If Double e Dub's post is accurate, then that is disconcerting . . . to put it mildly. Total buzz kill. Iowa is damn good and will kick Stanford's arse if the Cardinal go into Pasadena with nonchalant attitude. I'm hoping Shaw & Co. and seniors will not let that happen.

Not to dispute the arbitrary precision of the numbers (heaven forbid), but I believe we would beat either Iowa or Ohio State in Pasadena. The numbers create a false sense of precision which in effect leads one to despair that we would probably lose to Ohio State. Screw that!Â
Our task is clear, however. We are not playing Ohio State and, whether or not one believes that our victory over them would be more celebrated that our victory over Iowa, it matters not one twit. All that matters at this moment is preparing for the Rose Bowl as thoroughly as possible and delivering our very best effort. I sincerely believe that, if we achieve that, we will be victorious. If we are not, it is because the numbers were wrong about Iowa.

If we were playing OSU I'd feel like I did before ND, that it would be a close, tight game that could go either way. Playing Iowa I feel like I did before the CCG, we should beat them and we should beat them handily.

Cook just missed some makeable throws. Would be interesting to replay that game with a healthy version.
