He would have been a good one, but the decommitment was predictable from the moment he shut down his Twitter account.

Sounds like Montag is admitting guys but then doing as much as possible to dissuade them from coming.

From that article, it sounds like UM for Stewart.

Yeah, sounds like that admissions guy didn't know when to shut up. Shaw needs to do a little damage control. Hopefully Stewart still comes, but it doesn't sound like the slam dunk some were assuming it was.

Based on the article, it seems like Stewart to Michigan. It seemed like the academic prestige and rigour of Stanford overwhelmed Stewart and cast a doubt in his mind. Hopefully Iʻm wrong and he still chooses to commit to Stanford.

This really bothers me - University of Stanford? I know that itÊ»s a common mistake that others make but a person who just went through the entire application process and admitted should know better.Â
Itʻs still a great news though. Happy for Speights :D :P

I don't cast too many aspersions here because I went through the whole recruiting and admissions process not realizing the official name of the school was Leland Stanford Junior University.
A less egregious error perhaps, but one nevertheless.

That story was written by a Michigan writer. Few schools are as "homerific" in their reporting as: Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas, and UCLA. That is my feeling based on years of following this stuff. These are usually Stanford's biggest recruiting rivals also.
I'm pretty sure many people here were convinced Josh Garnett was going to Michigan when he was recruited, and if you read Michigan stories, who could blame you.
I'm not saying Stewart won't go to Michigan, but Stewart has been to Stanford three times, and he's from New Jersey! He also got admitted, and Stanford's WR depth chart is much less crowded than Michigan's. If the Michigan story included that tweet from Stewart about his visit, I'm sure the feeling would be a bit different.
That all said, I don't know what the point of hammering on academics is. Isn't that clear enough from the admissions process? It does sound like they are doing all they can to scare off recruits. Who needs to negative recruit against Stanford by saying how tough it is, when Stanford is doing so itself?

I did not get the feeling from that article that Stewart was headed to UM because of the Admission officer. I did get the feeling that maybe the admissions office saw Stewart's application as one that maybe they were bending on a little bit, and they wanted to reinforce that simply getting admitted should not be the end of the road. But if I was Stewart, I might get a little pissed off if I had worked really hard to get in, and then was getting this stern warning.Â
The bigger issue with UM could be that Stewart noted his former coach was now at Ann Arbor. So who knows how that will play. If Stewart really bonded with the other players, and his comfort level with them is higher than his comfort level at Ann Arbor, I guess he would still end up at Stanford.

In Stanford's favor, current temperature of 54 F versus 8 F in Ann Arbor!
Geaux Cardinal!
Re: 2016 Admits, commits, and prospects -
PrinceLightfoot - 01-18-2016
Let's compare the situation from Stewart's perspective:
Playtime advantage:
Stanford
- Michigan has 3 WRs and 2 ATH one whose strength is WR in this recruiting class.
- We have 0 WR for this class (Simi Fehoko is effectively class of 2018).
Offense scheme advantage:
Push
- Both run the same west coast offense.
Personal ties advantage:
Michigan
- One of Stewart's former high school coaches is part of the UM staff
- A few high school teammates are on the UM roster
Academic advantage:
Stanford
- Come on...he actually had to fill out an application to be accepted to Stanford.
Distance advantage:
Michigan
- 600 mi to Ann Arbor, MI
- 2,920 mi to Pal Alto, CA. He has been to Stanford campus twice before his OV this weekend so distance probably not too much of an issue
Coaching advantage:
Push
- Harbs and Shaw have different styles, but similar levels of accomplishment.
Gameday experience:
Michigan kinda...
- The shape of the Big House does not make it a loud stadium even with 100K+ people in the stands, but the number of people at a typical game doubles our capacity of 50K+.
Any other considerings? Thanks, BigEasy, for the weather comparison!
Re: 2016 Admits, commits, and prospects -
rudruff - 01-18-2016
I really think the Gameday experience factor is overblown with recruits. It is a great thing for 7-8 days out of the year and a brobdingnagian hassle the rest of the time.
The recent Joey Bosa article was a pretty good read on the downside of being the toast of the town. The first time you go out among your fellow students and are mobbed with well-wishers might be nice, but at some point there is real value in being able to sit in a public place with some friends and not be bothered.
I think one of Stanford's real positives is that you can kind of turn off the celebrity aspect of athletics here if you want to. Andrew Luck could ride his bike to the football facilities like a regular student and then face national press about being the best NFL QB prospect in a decade.
What would his life have been like at a football factory? Asking his roommate to go buy him toothpaste so he didn't have to spend 30 minutes signing autographs and taking selfies with fans.

Joshua Garnett also called the school the University of Stanford after he was admitted. I saw the tape. Seems strange given all the application materials one had to fill out, but maybe students apply to so many schools nowadays that they can't remember the names of all of them. ;)
