FWIW, my understanding is that the script was reviewed and approved in advance by the powers that be at Stanford, Iowa and the Rose Bowl.

Re: Iowa fans discover the Stanford Band - And are very angry and very confused - CornFed - 01-03-2016

I am amazed at the air of superiority and condescension that pervades some of the posts on this thread.  I recognize that I am not perfectly objective, having grown up in Iowa for my first 18 years and having had a wonderful childhood.  On the other hand, when I graduated from Stanford, it was a priority for me to get back to Northern California, because I see the beauty and opportunity in this area.  But I am stunned at the false narratives and stereotypes that overwhelm civil perceptions.

I can say that my cousin, a dermatologist from Des Moines, an Iowa season ticket holder and a graduate of the U. of Iowa School of Medicine, told me in November that even if Iowa ended up at the Rose Bowl, he would probably not attend.  He has been aware of the PAC-12's strength and also acknowledged the questions raised by Iowa's weaker schedule.  He didn't want to pay a bunch of money, travel all the way out to the West Coast and probably see his Hawkeyes soundly beaten.  He was not unique among his friends and the people who sit around him at games.

I have quite a few friends who came (or wanted to come) to the Rose Bowl because, as they said, Iowa just doesn't get that many opportunities.  All of them, to a person, at the very least acknowledged that the spread was right prior to the game and many joked that it was probably low, given Iowa's historical tendency to crap on itself in bowl games.

I could go on.  But I couldn't read this steady stream of summary judgments that is being prefaced by misguided presumptions about our West Coast superiority and the pitiful naivete and delusions of our Midwestern counterparts.  If your putting this crap out, a moment's introspection would probably do you some good.  Also, getting out of your comfortable echo chambers of illusion might be an interesting and stimulating experience for you.

I mean, it was pretty complimentary of them to me.  They basically said the Iowa band was fun and they would want to be their rival.  Yes they hit on corn and cow-tipping and general farmer stuff, but it's Iowa, that's the obvious fun stereotype you go for there.  As someone pointed out elsewhere, Iowa has an "America Needs Farmers" sticker on their helmets, so it's not like we really going out into left field with that one.

Perhaps the irony was lost on the Hawkeyes: a band representing a school nicknamed The Farm making fun of a farm state.
[/quote]

How many people in the state of Iowa do you think know that the school's nickname is "The Farm".  Hell, how many people outside of Stanford know that?  I mean, it gets mentioned publicly, but I wouldn't expect any non-alum to pay attention to that bit of trivia.

I find the band less amusing with each passing year.  That said, I am going to defend them here.  Iowa fans have their you know whats in a twist over the band because the alternative is to focus on the game, where their team was basically exposed as a pretender and not a contender within the first 15 seconds.  No one really knew what to make of Iowa given their ridiculously weak schedule.  I think we beat at least three (and maybe five) teams better than Iowa in 2015.  Iowa fans should be appreciative that they got a chance to see the band at all.  There were more deserving and worthy opponents for us, and we proved that by completely dominating the game for as much of the 60 minutes as held our interest.  Iowa fans should follow the lead of their more gracious players, tip their hats, move on and maybe schedule a real out of conference opponent.

Agree with MTBC and LeftCoast, and I might even take it a step further.  I think you have a perfect storm here:

1)  Every time I've spoken with a fan of an undefeated team, or a near-undefeated team, they almost always discount the weakness of their opponents and Iowa had a very weak schedule.

2)  Bad common opponent inferences. In this case, they beat Northwestern handily and compared it with our first-game loss, and discounted the starting time, limited playbook, first game of the season, etc.  I think many Iowa fans thought they would win by two touchdowns or more.

3)  Stanford players and coaches are smarter.  They clearly didn't account for the fact that with a month to prepare, our coaches are smarter than their coaches, and it gave us time to heal, whereas their QB is fairly pedestrian, not particularly mobile and had a groin injury.  Iowa fans tend to think of Iowans as smart, and might be a wee bit insecure about it.  First Iowan I ever met bragged to me about how smart Iowans were because they had the highest average SAT in the nation...sort of like the Hahvahd guy I met who mentioned that he had attended Hahvahd twice in the first four minutes of our conversation.  Ugh.

4)  We have a Heismann trophy winner on our team.  True, he'll probably win it next year, but he should have won it this year.  And he was a galaxy better than any player on their team.  I'm quite certain they collectively discounted the impact that McCaffrey would have, given that they had THE #1 RUN DEFENSE IN THE COUNTRY!  Ho, ho ho...

5)  They spent half a year's pay to come to Southern California...and I'll tell you, every time I've ever visited any Midwestern city other than Chicago, I've thought to myself "Thank goodness I don't live here."  I'm sure Des Moines and all the other Iowa towns and cities are perfectly fine, but I'd rather live in Alviso than any one of them.  So when they visit our fair state, especially those here for the first time, they are a bit taken aback at how darned terrific it is.

6)  I don't think they think of Stanford as a real football school.  I think they think of tOSU and Michigan State and Alabama and Iowa as real football schools.  But not Stanford.  That's an egghead school on the wimpy left coast.  They completely discounted the three-Rose Bowls-in-four years, they discounted Shaw's team record, they convinced themselves that their paltry team belonged on the same field as the Cardinal.

7)  I think they think, like the rest of the country, that the Pac-12 is not a 'real' football conference, particularly when compared with the tradition-rich, rock 'em, sock 'em Big Ten, ho ho ho.  Man, i can barely write that with a straight face.

And then they were more than soundly thrashed.  After 18 minutes of the game, they were behind by more points than any ranked team in any game this season.  The most Iowa had been down this entire season was 7 points.  Every single little delusion fell away, and was gone by the early part of the second quarter.  And then the band took the field, and all those nasty negative Iowa feelings were thrown at the incomparables.

In sum, and if I'm being candid, Iowa would have been a good opponent for U$C or UCLA.  I don't think Iowa would have beaten either of those teams, Oregon with Adams at QB, Goff-led berzerkeley, Utah, and probably two of the remaining Pac-12 opponents.  If Iowa played this season in the Pac-12, i think they would have gone 6-6.

You sound cool.

That "The Farm" vs "ANF" stuff was noted on various sports sites in the last week.  And the band script noted we are from "The Farm".

The nickname is not that obscure.  It didn't really matter.  We could have been an agricultural school and they still would have booed LSJUMB.  In fact, really, LSJUMB could have presented anything and they would have booed.  That was really the whole point.

No reason to get upset either way.  LSJUMB's goal was to get a few boos.  Iowa fans goal was to make sure they delivered those boos.

Those that want to imply that Iowa as a state is undesirable or whatever are taking it too far.  LSJUMBs little joke works as comedy if they say it, get a laugh (or boo) and move on.

FWIW - I do find it funny that almost everyone in the stadium has seen farmersonly.com ads.  How much money do they charge their customers that enables them to plow so much money into national, and largely urban, TV advertising?

FWIW - The Iowa band's playlist in the second half was awesome.  They were just playing all kinds of popular current tunes for the folks in the stands.  I would take the Iowa band's musical selections over most in the Pac-12 any day.

FWIW2 - As an at-large style selection Iowa was lucky to get into the Rose Bowl.  Honestly, tOSU was clearly a better team with a more impressive resume.  A Pac-12 runner-up that was, at best, the third strongest team from the conference would simply never get to appear in the Rose Bowl.  So hard to feel too bad for Iowa and their fans.

I am hoping this post was tongue in cheek.  Iowa's "Salute to Queen" does not exactly represent "popular current tunes" unless this is 1979.  They played "We will Rock You," "Another One Bites the Dust" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" as three of their first four selections.  Given the halftime score, I assumed that the first two were the Iowa band's attempt at satire.

Here's the script for the halftime show (click on it to read the second page) --

Which specific lines of the script are the Iowa people complaining about?

Can we just agree that we beat the piss out of Iowa at the Rose Bowl?  No need to be nasty to the State of Iowa and its good people, even if they do have an absolutely frightening and disproportionate say in who is elected POTUS.

What, exactly, are you complaining about here? Anyone who was upset about that halftime show was either:

1) Just upset about the outcome of the game and taking it out on the band; or:
2) A humorless buffoon.

Did you read the script? Did you look at the comments on that facebook post? Do you want to defend those Iowans who are calling Stanford classless because the band mostly made fun of itself? I don't tend to judge entire fanbases/populations by the actions of a few, but Iowa has really not come off looking good in this whole thing.

Not their halftime show.  Their play selection in the second half.  Pretty nice. Some of the items were songs I associate with strong defensive play that they were playing after good Iowa offensive efforts, but whatever.  They had a nice variety of songs during the second half, unlike the schools that call LA home.

I'm not the least bit upset about the halftime show (or what I understand it to have been).  Generally, I love LSJUMB and understand that comedy sometimes can go flat or have other unanticipated impacts.  I would agree that those Iowa fans who got their knickers in a knot reacting to it fall into one of the two categories you identify.  I am put off by those here who refer to Iowans as a broad brush stereotype of witless boobs or fire-breathing, irrational, witless (intentionally repeated) fanatics.  Without doubt there do exist both those types in Iowa.  It is remarkable to me that people apply labels so gratuitously as though there are none of those types present here in the Holy Land.

Fair enough. Though, in general, I have an extremely big issue with those general types of posts, where you're calling out someone but it's not clear who, exactly. I think people should either quote them (or list them or something) or just not post. And this isn't just you, it happens an alarming amount of time on this board and seems to me to often just be someone tilting at windmills (though the sentiment you're talking about seems to be occurring here a bit).

Being upset by that show means you were either going to be upset about anything LSJUMB did, or you're a buffoon.

Stupac, I agree. I am mad as hell at someone and they better not say what they said again.  They have been warned!

Ah, I see.

Have you talked to someone who actually explained why they were offended (were you offended?  Can you explain why?)?  So far internet comments just say "classless" and "farmers feed America" and "we raise pigs not cattle", none of which explain anything to me.  Particularly since I think the cow represented Northern California.  I think.
