Cal needs to get over itself. They are a stepping stone job, just as Stanford was for decades until Shaw came along. And when Shaw leaves we could go back to being one too, so I'm not woofing over it. This about ADs and their egos
The difference between Bowlsby and Williams couldn't be more clear. Bowlsby - and the Stanford community - knew Harbaugh was NEVER long-term for Stanford and to my knowledge nobody got very frustrated that he kept interviewing for jobs after every season including his first one. Williams seems to think he can hire someone who will build a successful program and stay. He's delusional. Anybody he hires will be aspiring to a better job, and will start being considered for and interviewing for those jobs after their first moderatly successful season.
The reason for firing Yikes should have been, "If after all these interviews nobody else wants him, why should we?"

But do they have to be a stepping stone? I think they have a great story to tell, the greatest public university in the land, in the dynamic SF Bay Area. They don't
have to be terrible. I know we have fun with them, but they should be a validly strong football team.Â

Yes, but you have to admit that it is very entertaining to see him pick apart the 49ers in general and Jed York in particular. He is so incredibly far from balanced on that topic, it's amusing to see how skewed his writing is. And it's all because it's personal, because Jed made it personal.

I don't think we should fear Chip Kelly. Cal had no lack of offense last season. Chip Kelly is not known for fielding strong defenses. Bring it on Bears. >:(

The worry with Kelly isn't that he wins year one, or even year two, but that his name can draw in recruits and that he can scheme his way to a few upsets and build momentum. With Dykes they were going nowhere, but with Kelly you could see that changing over time.
The problem, of course, is that there's no reason to think Kelly wants to be there for one year, let alone multiple.

Ironically it's his vendetta against the York family that has made him one of the more credible writers covering the team over the past 12-24 months. With Barrows and Maiocco it's a lot of "Nothing to see here, everything's fine."

I disagree. What Differentiated Chip Kelly from Mark Helfrich is that Kelly could field a competent defense. The Ducks' offense was ok this year, but what doomed them was their utter lack of a defense.

No they don't have to be one forever, but that's where they are now and it takes a good decade at least to get out of that. My point is that Mike Williams needs a reality check about what that job is and what it isn't.

I don't know that it takes a decade. It took Stanford two years to get out of it, when we replaced Harris with Harbaugh.

Chip Kelly's Oregon defenses weren't Alabama-style lockdown ones, but they could be tough when they had to be. Ask Andrew Luck about how they performed in the second halves of 2010 and 2011.

Another relevant example of a quick turnaround is Colorado - a bitter comparison for the B.ears. The Buffs were in worse position than our Northern neighbors when C.al passed over Macintyre for D.ykes. Watching the Buffaloes in their first bowl game in 10 years and mentioned for a Rose Bowl bid in the season the Bears fired Dykes must have been a bitter moment for the C.al AD and fan base.Â
Did Stanford have a similar miss during the Harris or Teevens hires? I don't remember any of the passed over candidates bathed in later glory.

What changed there, though? Helfrich was just a crappy recruiter? He kept Kelly's entire defensive staff, so it doesn't seem like there should've been much change. Would Kelly be able to rebuild that at Cal? Certainly not quickly, they just don't have the guys.

Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti retired after the 2013 season, which was Mark Helfrich's first year as head coach. Aliotti generally got the credit for the strong defenses during Chip Kelly's tenure.

Except, of course, that Harbaugh still viewed it as a stepping stone. Hell, he almost viewed his success after two years as a stepping stone to *yech* Kansas, and he certainly viewed it as an audition for the NFL.

Aliotti certainly played a role, but Oregon also had a run of elite talent on D. People like Arik Armstead, Kiko Alonzo, Deforest Buckner, Ekpre Olamu, Troy Hill, etc. I don't see any comparable talents on the roster currently.

My recollection is that he didn't so much retire as he was pushed out, which started the brobdingnagian downswing on defense for them. Is that incorrect?
