Also, there was a back in the backfield with Burns! So in no way was it a wildcat, just a designed QB run out of the shotgun.

Man, Shawngren is getting really good at this misdirection thing. One day we'll have a feared playcaller ;)
(A head coach's first job is managing the program, not calling plays. Maybe Bloomgren is getting good at this too.)

Whether it's right or not to me the Wildcat involves (1) direct snap to someone who is not QB in an empty backfield; (2). Motion with timing so that there is a potential fly sweep option; (3). QB stays on the field split wide.
My understanding of the term is that only (1) is needed to make it a wildcat.
(2) is nice to have as it gives the defense more to worry about, but also make the non-QB have to do more QB-like things (decide whether to hand off, and execute the handoff). It's still a wildcat with or without this.
(3) isn't required either, but it lets you run the play (and check in or out of it on the fly) without having to substitute, so it's often seen. One wrinkle I've seen Stanford use is to run wildcat with no QB on the first play of a possession, or maybe right after a timeout, then sub in the QB on the next play.

Remember we have also had a few throws out of the wildcat. On our first possession of the Rose bowl versus Wisconsin, we had a wildcat formation and called a reverse to Drew Terrell (as I recall, Terrell had played QB in high school). Terrell hit Jamal-Rashad Patterson for a long gain on an otherwise meh offensive night. Interestingly, the trick play didn't fool Wisconsin and JRP was covered, but he still managed to make the catch.

Also, in the Sun Bowl, Cameron Scarlett took the direct snap, pitched it to Bryce Love, who then pitched it to Ryans Burns. Then, Ryan Burns stepped back and completed a deep pass to Francis Owusu. The forty one yard gain led to a field goal.
