I guess what I find odd about the posited trade-off - a posting style that irritates a significant number of CardBoarders in exchange for a unique point of view - is that it is entirely imposed by user preference. It would be one thing if English wasn't his first language and so his posts sometimes contained grammar errors that would otherwise set off CardBoarder Grammar Police Sirens, or if he needed to use of Dragon transcription software because of a hand injury, and so posts contain a few mistranscriptions. I would have absolutely no problem looking past those kinds of things, because I really do welcome and want contributions from as many alums as possible. However, to me (and again, maybe I'm in the minority here), when he is asked nicely to tone it down by more than a handful of Cardboarders, and the response is,
this is how I am, deal with it, I can't help but feel like it's a bit of a "screw you" to the rest of the Board.
Here's an analogy: I have a rather loud speaking voice in real life, which would be a fantastic asset if I were a Shakespearean actor needing to project into row QQ, but can be a liability in the small office spaces in which I have mostly worked. I am occasionally reminded of this and asked to crank down the decibel level of my voice. Were I to react by saying,
this is how I am, deal with it, I suspect I would not be well liked around the office. Instead, somewhat embarrassed, I immediately correct, because civility is important, and I want to maintain a collegial environment. I guess I don't think it's too much to ask for the same rules to apply here. Thanks, as always, for hearing me out, and I appreciate hearing alternative viewpoints as well.

I think JohnnyO's content is fine; I agree that it is a net positive to the board. While I realize it is just a schtick, I do wish he would tone down his in your face posting style (of which the all caps is emblematic) to make it a little more compatible with the style of the Cardboard (where people are, for the most part, civil and polite to each other, a feature I appreciate).
If and when he comes back, we'll see if he does.
Wow, I got down-voted for saying I hoped JohnnyO wouldn't change his style. I appreciate this forum a ton. JPRI's comment about his thing being just schtick is how it comes across to me too, and I can't help but appreciate a guy who played on a Stanford team in the '70s. I have that right, don't i? I found it amusing that for him a point of emphasis is made in lower case :D.
[/quote]
Before this became a public issue, I was considering a PM to JohnnyO53 about his use of all caps. It would have gone something like this:
"I appreciate the commentary which you bring to the CardBoard, though I don't always agree. Your posts would be easier for me to read if you used standard capitalization instead of all caps. However, that's a personal choice which you are free to make. Welcome, and Geaux Cardinal."
A suspension for his recent ad hominem attack seems appropriate, and I hope he comes back after serving it. In my opinion, he has relevant experience to share with other lovers of Stanford sports.Â
And thank you to all who promote civil discourse here.
Geaux Cardinal!

Hey Chicago, these sites are clubs. The Boot was a club which turned childish and churlish. I don't speak computer so all caps don't bother me. Hope the DOC sticks around. He speaks football.

Well, I guess we'll all be waiting around with bated breath to see what happens when JohnnyO (AKA DOC) gets off Double Secret Probation. :)
One thing is for sure, with him around things are never dull.

People are way too sensitive on this board, IMO. If you don't conform to a certain style, you aren't respected here very much. JohnnyO may not be the prototype Cardboard poster, but he certainly adds color and illustrates not everyone who went to Stanford is cut from the same cloth. That is refreshing, and diversity makes populations stronger. To me, everyone has a take and a right to express it. As long as they don't personally attack people or get into prohibited topics, why should they be marginalized?Â
When this board allowed individual posts to be up voted or down voted, I would do that because that provided insight into sentiment on given topics. But I have a real problem with judging people not posts. I think I've down voted someone on this board one time, for something that clearly broke the board rules. I may disagree with someone's take on a topic, but that person may be someone I would have great respect for if I actually knew them personally, so I'm going to tell them I don't respect them by down voting them personally? No, I'm not.
Multiple posts on the same topic in an hour is annoying and that behavior is clearly intended to dominate the board discussion, but that's something Yvonne can address in board rules. But frankly, like all trolling, if you don't like it, ignore it, or you validate and enable it.

I never felt like JohnnyO was trying to dominate anything here; he posted a lot after the UCLA game because he was excited. I was too!

I always thought typing in all caps on the internet was universally considered rude and impolite, but apparently some people seem to think it is just a different style of posting that no one should get particularly excited or upset about.
Which is it? I guess different people can have different opinions.

I believe that if they did, no team would ever get a recruit again.

Some of us are old enough to remember when computers had no lower case characters, so the case isn't as important to us. ;D However, one should follow the "conventions" of the internet in order to communicate effectively. Not doing so creates the opportunity for misunderstanding the meaning. People see shouting when it is not intended, and that raises hackles.

I'm with ChicagoFan and OutsideVisitor...johnnyO brings more to this board than I do (due to the amount of football attention), and I think it's in the board's best interest to not ostracize him. I don't think there's any slippery slope from all caps to truly gibberish txt speak either.
Also, I'm watching friends tear down their homes and pick up their lives in Houston; all caps doesn't even register on the inconvenience scale for me.

I will say that I've been on a lot of message boards about a lot of different topics and before Johnny never once found someone who always posted in all-caps. It just makes it unreadable. I have no idea if he has anything insightful to say because I absolutely cannot read beyond the first sentence. When he's half the posts in a thread, well, goodbye thread.
I've been looking into FF extensions that change it, but most of them seem to be broken because of FF's new add-on management system. I could probably whip something up in greasemonkey since it would be a very straightforward regex to just all-lowercase it, but there's only so much time in the day...

Here's another technological alternative for people who use the chrome browser, like the content of what DOC has to add, but find it very difficult to read all caps posts.

Quote:makes all letters lowercase
a simple extension that makes all the letters on the net lowercase, for those who dont like feeling like theyre being yelled at or simply like the chill aesthetic.
please note that no caps will not work on images but will work on every other piece of textthis may cause problems, for which i cant be held responsible.
I can't vouch for it but I might try it if/when DOC comes back.

OK, so I tested it, and the good news is that it works. Here's a screen shot of DOC without the all caps.
Downside is that it converts all letters lowercase (as advertised), so you lose regular capitalization. Plus it applies to all posts, not just the ones in all caps, and to all websites, not just message boards. Also, no easy way to shut it off...
So probably not the technological solution I want, but there's a good chance that some other extension is out there.

Evernote won't let us see that image, so you may need to host it elsewhere.
The evernote issue has led to a nice bit of (I assume) unintentional humor, where your post appears to say that without the all caps, DOC becomes a blank space.
