This was their first win against a good team. Given that they had played poorly last couple weeks, this was quite a turnaround. Always good to see Leach get smoked.

×ÉÉ's only losses this year were U$C, at UW and at Oregon. Havent lost to anyone bad.

What a fun game! My only gripe is that I swear I have been feeling Wazoo could be exposed and I'm just disappointed that someone already has done that.
Although I almost never root for ×ÉÉ, I gotta say, congrats to them. They clearly deserved the win in every way possible. Incredible preparation.
Heart. Physicality. And they made the plays they had to every time, with some plays that should make the Pac-12 highlight reel of the season (after a ton of Bryce Love runs, of course).

Did he predict a 34 point loss for the Cougs against Kal? If he did I missed it. I seem to recall him saying he thought they would get "exposed" but I didn't interpret that as a 34 point loss to Kal.

Watching C.al run out the clock, with Wazzu stacked in the box and C.al still making yards, made me smile at the thought of Love going through some of those holes. C.al's RBs look pretty slow to hit the hole, but so does everyone else, compared to Bryce.
The Son of Zeus is a player -- at 245, I wonder how long he can last at DT. You'd think they would put him at LB.

The game reminded me a little of our game with Washington last year. A top ten team goes into a Friday night game at a conference opponent's locale and basically gets their butts handed to them.
The difference, of course, is that Washington hadn't lost three straight prior to our playing them.

Are you referring to Hercules Mata'afa?

Wilcox is a great coach in the making. The evidence is becoming difficult to deny.
I know a lot of people here don't put stock in what coaches say in press conferences, but go watch the Wilcox post-game presser after Washington last week. You will be a lot less surprised about the WSU upset after watching it.

I'll certainly give Wilcox credit for one thing. He has assembled (as I have said before) what I feel to be an excellent staff.
I wasn't overly surprised at the WSU upset, but I was certainly surprised at the margin of victory.

That kal defensive staff must have had their kids prepped and ready to play. They're doing something right over there. Stanford needs to be ready; it's going to be a tough Big Game this year.

I wonder with a result like this for Wash St how much other teams can apply from whatever ×ÉÉ's defensive coaches did against the Wash St offense (should have stated that in the form of a question)...

Love this topic...
It's almost cliche for pundits to say "did this provide a blue print" when an upset happens. But let's be clear, there is a big difference between say Syracuse upsetting Clemson by 3pts, and ×ÉÉ absolutely annihilating the Cougs by 34.
×ÉÉ in fact did provide a blue print, IMO. They don't play man-to-man, bring extra blitzers-oriented defense, like say Oregon does. And they play a 3-4 defense that relies on more LBs than DL. Given Leach doesn't run much, when a defense confuses the OL and QB with different zone blitz and coverage looks, it can be very difficult on the Air Raid offense.
IMO, with what ×ÉÉ exposed, Leach is going to have some trouble unless he can establish a real running threat, against other 3-4 teams they will face. Stanford also plays a 2 DL look. Stanford hasn't been using as much of a variety of blitzes as ×ÉÉ uses, but there is no reason to think Anderson won't be using the same tactics against the Cougs now.Â
×ÉÉ rarely rushes more than 4 guys, but brings LBs, Safeties, and Corners from all directions. Stanford is equipped to do exactly the same thing to the Cougs that ×ÉÉ did.Â

What I was surprised about is how routinely Cal managed to pressure Falk. They sacked him something like seven times, frequently without blitzing, and often just using stunts up front. That typically doesnt work against WSU because Falk gets rid of the ball so quickly with a lot of quick dink and dunk passes, and twists and stunts take a little bit longer to develop. Last night, Falk looked like a statue out there (a bit like Halliday did against us a few years ago, when we knocked him out of the game). I was surprised, but good for Cal for pulling it off.
Cal will go bowling this year and with games against Colorado, Arizona coming up Big Game may feature a battle of two Bowl-eligible teams.

It's becoming a trademark play of Bowers when his teams win a big game. He did it when his team won in the finals of the Washington HS playoffs. Since mom used to be the gymnastics coach at Washington, he had a good instructor.
