Quote:Unranked Stanford sounds so bizarre, like sugar-free cotton candy or snowy Tahiti. It does not roll off the tongue easily. The rest of the Pac-12 and the nation probably will not get accustomed to saying it. The Cardinal didnt look anything like an also getting votes team in Friday nights conference opener against No. 11 UCLA.
Quote:Senior Brittany McPhee, in her second game back from an ankle injury that cost her nine games, scored half of her game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter, starting with a Harlem Globetrotters trick shot.... McPhee, facing her bench, beat the buzzer with a hook shot over her head from beyond the free-throw line that hit the backboard and dropped in....Asked how much time she spends practicing that shot, McPhee said, I would say none. Im used to doing that 2 feet from the basket, not 20.

McPhee highlights:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_xmt7iXAjk
And comments from the press conference:
In her opening statement, Tara highlighted how the touch schedule got the team ready to play UCLA--that UCLA was a lot like Tennessee and Baylor. She highlighted McPhee but also Fingall points and Smith's rebounding. Smith "is a double-double machine."  "The one thing is to take care of the ball better."
"Marta played really well defensively."Â "Playing defense all day long on Jordin Canada is not an easy job."
Keep in mind that Nadia was sitting next to Tara. Reporter: Was this Nadia's "best game?" Tara: "Nadia's gone back to back, I thought Tennessee was the best game and this might be a tie with that one, so now this is how she plays--so no more 'best game' this is how she plays. What a great boost for Nadia to come in, play 25 minutes for us, have 10 points, get 3 assists, rebounding, I thought she helped us defensively, it ought to be a brobdingnagian confidence boost for her."Â
Tara pointed out that Fingall has played against these teams before. "I think our freshmen were a little bit deer-in-the-headlights, maybe not understanding how every possession is so important, but Nadia stepped in big."
Nadia was asked about her role in playing against the zone--jumpers from the vicinity of the free throw line. "We knew they were going to play in 2-3 zone, and Tara and the coaches all week told me that I have to own that spot, that little free-throw area shot is something I could really use to help the team, and it is definitely something we can exploit because that middle area is open."
Tara: "We did play a really, really, really tough preseason schedule, and I think people understand what it takes to win at this level, because we lost, and just saying 'we're tired of that.' "
Asked about the lack of a set lineup. "Maybe we don't need one. We know Britt's in it. We don't have to have a set lineup. We'll just go with who is hot and who is playing well. We are playing a lot of people, I think Maya can give us more, I think Kiana can give us more, but our returners have got to lead the way. Tonight it was Alanna, it was Nadia, even the defense of Kayl and her going 2/3, playing 33 minutes and playing great defense and rebounding. For us to go where we want to go we can't depend on the freshmen right now, the freshmen will come along, but it's just different....D's going to have to help us more but she just got back...."
"For this team, if we hadn't played that tough schedule, we would lose this game."

McPhee led with 26 points on 10/16 but played only 27 minutes. Particularly important, on several occasions when the clock was running down she was the player who had to make something happen. She would drive and collect a foul, for example.Â
She also made a crazy shot to beat the clock at one point, a sort of hook heave from near the top of the key. It was her night for sure. Hope she has a lot more like it.

Just watched the DVR. That was fun, despite frustrating miscues. May we have many more games like this!

Did you notice how Canada was bodying her up while she was making that shot? When you watch the McPhee highlights reel notice how many times Canada was actually fouling McPhee with her little body while McPhee converted--and Canada got away with it about three times earlier in the game. Finally, she got called for it with only 2:53 left in the game-- and McPhee converted a three point play. I noticed this about Tennessee too--the refs routinely let defenders whack shooters with their whole bodies so long as they don't use their arms. I guess that being able to score at this level means that you need to be able to shoot through that level of contact.
Also notice that on that 2:53 shot that it was Fingall who fed her the crisp assist, and that Fingall followed up by crashing the paint for a possible O-board. Fingall really was playing well.

One of the great things about McPhee's game has always been how well she handles contact. Far from shying away, she seeks it out and likes it, and has no problem finishing through it.

Still need to clean up the turnovers. It can be done. Most games have not been good in that respect for a few have been. On the whole, a great effort with everyone who played doing something good. That was the sort of effort that can win a lot of games. Defensively it was much, much better and even against the zone the offense looked pretty decent. Shot 50%? I would not have guessed that as I sat watching, but now that I think about it, we did shoot a lot of layups. A lot of that is McPhee, but still, I think having Fingall score like like she did, especially the FT line jump shots, really helped. We need at least 3 scorers on the floor, and she gave us a third after Brit and Alanna. That meant we could play Marta and Kaylee and still have enough offense. Doesn't hurt that UCLA does not make the best use of all that talent. With Dean shooting threes, Canada dominating at guard, Billings and the others inside, they have top 5 talent perhaps. This should be their year with the seniors they have.Â
Now the question is consistency. Need that level or better every game.

Great game last nite and a good start to conference play. Good to see the band, but what was with the strange warbling noises they were making when Stanford was shooting free throws ? Hope to see the cheerleaders and Dollies Sunday.

She was pretty annoying, but you have to give her credit for courage, standing up by herself in a Stanford crowd and shouting for UCLA at the top of her lungs. She seemed to be trying to do the call and response thing with the UCLA fans behind the bench on the opposite side of the court. She got quieter and quieter the longer her team stayed behind.

I told 81 at the chalk talk when it was said we would be racing back on Defense we cant complain about lack of O Boards. I think we did surprisingly well there
I loved Marta last night. She was clam and cool and got the ball to people to make shots. Theres a lot to said for the non stat quick pass then quick pass. Marta to a player to another for a score. 52% has a lot to do with Marta. But mostly I loved how she grabbed loose balls. Grappled as it This ball is mine.Â
Always love McPhee.  The Todd Lichti Of WBB. Fearless and so athletic
But as a poster said got to win again tomorrow

Yes, it is very hard to be in two places at the same time, so normally you give up O-boards to get back quickly on D. Against UCLA we gave up just 6 fast break points, and most of those I think came on steals rather than off of missed shots. Against Tennessee we gave up 12 fast break points and at least 3-4 of those baskets came when they got a defensive rebound and beat us down the court. So that was one of the three things Kate said we worked on, and it really showed.Â
Free throw shooting and reducing turnovers were the other two, and the free throw shooting looked just as bad as it has all year until we got into the 4th quarter and finished strong when we had to. Let's hope that started a trend.Â
As for turnovers, against Tennessee we had 15 turnovers and they had 11 steals, meaning we had 4 unforced errors. Against UCLA we had 20 turnovers and they had 11 steals, meaning we didn't possess the ball any better and got worse with the unforced errors. On the other hand, UCLA seemed to play more frenetic, pressing defense.
The comparison of McPhee with Todd Lichti is spot-on. I had not thought of that comparison but you are absolutely right--Lichti played and moved with a very similar style to McPhee. Lichti was the reason I got interested in basketball--and McPhee I confess is so much fun to watch that I enjoy seeing her play about as much as any player ever.
