Re: MBB: UCLA at Stanford - GoodGrief - 01-05-2018

Pish-posh I say to all who panicked after the Cal game. Kedzie Okpala is back, and I still have my $5 Mirage Sports Book ticket for Stanford to win the National Championship, and I'm going to be rich, I tell you, RICH! (okay, well $1500 richer after we win the National Championship)

That's a nice article, but my copy of the print edition of this morning's SJMN doesn't even include a mention that Stanford PLAYED last night, never mind describing the win. Big article on C.al's loss to USC. Very strange. And annoying. One sentence saying "game ended too late to make this edition" would still have been annoying, but less so.

Fun to see us come from behind and win with some energy. I'll admit I didn't even both to DVR the game as I assumed another drubbing - I may try to see if they're replaying it.

Pickens is clearly a game changer for us because he's an actual threat from beyond the arc in a way no one else on the team is. And Davis's stat line was pretty wowsa: 22 pts on 8-11 shooting, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists to 2 turnovers. He's come a long way from November, already.

I'm heartened to hear that those watching like what they see from Okpala, because so far his numbers don't look all that great. Across 3 games his FG% is .303, 3PT% is .200, and FT% is .450, while averaging only 10 points and 3 rebounds in 33 minutes per game. Hopefully that's just a natural consequence of having to settle in midway through the season.

Finally, I assume Cartwright must have been out with some sort of injury? I can't imagine Haase would bench him entirely given our not-so-deep bench.

Hey, he's come a long way from last game, when his line was 3 points on 1-1 shooting, 0 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 turnovers.

If only we could do a linear extrapolation.

Re: MBB: UCLA at Stanford - Viking_Guy - 01-05-2018

I wonder if the issue with Cartwright was who was he going to guard, more than anything else.  That's been a primary concern, and was DEFINITELY evident last night - the roster doesn't seem to have anyone who can take on a good primary ball handler and stay in front of him.  Running a straight isolation play for a point guard should not result in lightly contested layups.

And that brings up one underappreciated thing from the game - da Silva's defense late in the game being switched onto Aaron Holiday.  His long arms disrupted Holiday more than any of our guards were able to - and he stayed with him more closely than Pickens did.

OTOH, it makes some other games - ASU, in particular - look much more difficult.

I do like this freshman class!  Hope they continue to develop and progress.  Nice athleticism.  Finally watched the UCLA game yesterday . . . found myself yelling at key times despite already knowing the outcome  ;D
