RE: Air quality - yvonne - 11-15-2018

AFAIK, there's been only one other time that Big Game has been postponed. Can anyone confirm or refute this?

1941?

LOL, I was thinking that too.  Not the worst time for a surprise bye week.

I did have to look this up: Stanford cancelled football 1943-1945 so no Big Game.

There was one postponement, when the game was played a week later. 1963. We all know why.

RE: Air quality - muiron - 11-15-2018

Cal cancelled its men's basketball game tonight. It was, of course, to be played indoors.

I think Big Game - and FOUR (count 'em) NCAA soccer playoff matches this weekend at Cagan - are in serious jeopardy.

Wish I knew the backup plans, especially for the tournament games. Bus to Monterey?

Things are not expected to get better until the middle of next week. We’ve been told at work that pretty much anyone who wants to can work from home (though the air might better in the office than at home).

Stanford just canceled classes for Friday - email went out at 10:00 pm.  Other work continues with maximum latitude for employees who have health or family (kids with no school) issues. The sporting events remain unchanged ... for now.

RE: Air quality - French Rage - 11-15-2018

There's no way they can't cancel at this point, right?  I mean seriously.  They've made all of the campuses no-go zones and they want 90K people to gather in a freaking bowl.

You forget the power that the almighty dollar has over Pac-12 athletics...

Gotta pay the bills. With all the sports the schools support these days, I'm sure it ain't cheap.

The way I see it, at Big Game there are 89,999 people graciously breathing in -- also known as filtering -- the air for me.  I don't understand how this escapes the pointy heads fueling this artificial panic.

kal has also cancelled classes today..  In re the game, the Chancellor's statement says,

"Insofar as Saturday afternoon’s Big Game is concerned, we are relying on the same standards, practices, data and expert guidance that have supported our decisions to date. At this point, the forecast indicates there could be an improvement in air quality on Saturday due to changes in wind patterns. So, while we realize there is potential for inconvenience we will defer any decisions about the status of the game until closer to the game, a time when the decision can be made based on actual conditions in our area."

That's my conference!   Football TV broadcast commitments over public safety or public image.

Solution is right there - I so wish the conference would take the sensible move.

1) Postpone game until 12/1.
2) Divert fire and police resources that would be standing around the stadium to do almost anything closer to the Camp Fire
3) For 12/1 invite all of the families of Paradise HS to the game.
4) If fire is out or 100% contained, make sure to bring the fire fighters out at halftime.

But instead my conference will...
Show the region that holding a football game at 4:30PM on Pac-12 Nets is simply more important than anything else.
Prove once and for all that the health and safety of studet-athletes is only important when TV revenue is not on the line.

Ugh...
I still maintain that a 12/1 game would be better for the Pac-12 as some will seek an alternative to the 30+ point blowout in the ACC.
Clemson vs Pitt will be at 5PM - Counter programming to that should be viable.

Though if there is a reschedule, I would prefer a nice (traditional) 1PM type kick-off even if that is opposite the might SEC CG game.

RE: Air quality - 82lsju - 11-16-2018

so apparently the HVAC system where I work was sucking in enough smoke that it set off a smoke alarm ~6:30am today that summoned the Sunnyvale FD (six engines).  I got here as they were leaving (~7:30am) and am now in a building with no HVAC systems on.  It is eerily quiet and I'm listening to a con-call several rows over that someone has on speaker phone (nothing juicy yet)

RE: Air quality - Griffins78 - 11-16-2018

morning news said today is very unhealthy and we now expect smoke all weekend until Monday

RE: Air quality - Treebound - 11-16-2018

Stanford Golf Course sent out a notice this morning that the course is closed at least through 12 noon.  So much for our Big Game Golf tradition.  Both Stanford and Menlo Park City Schools cancelled last night and a Buck Cardinal meeting was cancelled this morning.  I think there is a very high likelihood that Big Game will be postponed until Dec 1, given that neither team is playing for the Pac 12 championship - sad for us given our talent level.  I just hope they make the call by today.

Go Stanford!

That happened to us last year!

RE: Air quality - 82lsju - 11-16-2018

so we're mostly discussing that if Big Game is not played on Sat that it will be rescheduled, would they just cancel the game and not reschedule?

RE: Air quality - BobK - 11-16-2018

Of course it could be cancelled. Hope postponed of course

RE: Air quality - stupac2 - 11-16-2018

Outright canceling it when postponing it would be so easy (it's not like Memorial Stadium or Stanford Stadium are doing anything 12/1) would be so outrageously stupid that it's probably what's going to happen.
