And yet, here we are with still a chance.

That was really unfortunate. 15 yards over from where it was intercepted #4 was wide open for a touchdown

Nobody noted that we had a nice touchdown on the next drive?

Disagree, Cal’s defense has gotten more effective as they’ve realized we aren’t going to run.

BC

FWIW, Cal has outgained us and have the same number of points to show for it.

BC

Bad sarcasm.  Sorry.

Sorry, my sarcasm game was piss poor today.  Funny thing happened when we started running the ball on the next drive, no?

My stream has frozen.  That drive was short and on the ground, yes?

...and much of what they talk about is science fiction, not science.

Defense has gotten some nice coverage on a number of plays.  Not real consistent, but promising.

RE: Next starts shortly (Big Game thread) - BostonCard - 11-23-2019

Yes, we had a bunch of runs. None of them big; most of the 3-4 yard variety but it made Mills more efficient passing.

And nice to see Scarlett push it in on first and goal.  Really nice push by the OL; although Scarlett jumped the pile, he was in anyways.

Cal receiver WIDE OPEN!!

RE: Next starts shortly (Big Game thread) - BostonCard - 11-23-2019

We took five minutes off the clock, which is good, but left Cal with 2:23 and three time outs.

This is an amazing story if we pull it off.  Our young offensive line is totally under the gun.  I have everything crossed.

Never mind.  No TWU.  No Toby Gerhardt.  Settle for a field goal.

We are off a tempo. Cal is in control. Our defense will determine whether or not we win.

We should have thrown the ball on 3rd and 4. Had Mills not completed it, we can still attempt the field goal. The run was never going to get us a first down. Meaning, we knew, at best, we'd only go up by 3. That's Shaw for you.

RE: Next starts shortly (Big Game thread) - CornFed - 11-23-2019

I do not feel good about this AT ALL.

RE: Next starts shortly (Big Game thread) - BostonCard - 11-23-2019

It took Cal a little over a minute to score a TD.  Ugh.

BC

Not being able to convert on fourth and one seems like it encapsulates the season in a nutshell.

Run up the middle from the shot gun on fourth and one. Totally Teevens-esque. Time for some wholesale changes when it comes to the offensive braintrust.

Congratulations to Cal for taking the Axe back after a long drought.

RE: Next starts shortly (Big Game thread) - Viking_Guy - 11-23-2019

The two plays that help define the season:

2nd and 4, with 3 minutes left, tie game, in field goal range.  You've just run for 6 yards on first down.  Let's heave the ball downfield into a jumpball, incomplete pass, little gain on 3rd down, and scoring with 2:20 left and Cal still having all their timeouts to go up 3.  You run that ball twice, maybe get a first down, and at least run another 40 seconds off the clock or force a timeout.

And on second down and 4, your receiver runs a route that puts him at the sticks when he receives the ball - and runs backwards two yards to try to turn it upfield.  Followed by an incomplete pass on third and two.

No identity for this team at all.

FWIW, we ran the inside handoff to Scarlett on third and one in the previous drive and he got three yards. I told Stupac then that I’ve never liked that inside handoff, but that we usually seem to get it to work with Scarlett.

Had to settle for a field goal on that last drive and that just wasn't enough.  Just not enough.  We are soooooo vulnerable.  I am already looking forward to next year!!!  I just hope that we can achieve some kind of physical recovery.  It seems like in recent years we lose ground to injuries even in the offseason.  I do hope this sticks in the craws of the players who are coming back.  Should be able to find some motivation in all this.

RE: Next starts shortly (Big Game thread) - ADPinWDC - 11-23-2019

At 4-7 now, losing the Axe and Dead Last in the Pac-12 on Offense... any changes needed?
INJURIES will get all the blame this season, but the lack of point and yardage production is THE SYSTEM, not just injuries.

RE: Next starts shortly (Big Game thread) - needle - 11-23-2019

I hate Cal.

This team doesn't have an adequate short and intermediate passing game. We take shots down the field and sometimes they work, but sometimes we need to find a soft spot in the coverage for 5-15 yards or a short pass that will allow the receiver to run after the catch. Shaw may talk about how Walsh has influenced him, but we're missing a big component of a Walsh-style offense.
