A guy in my freshman dorm walked on, tho didn't get any playing time until his fourth and fifth years. Not sure if he ever was on a scholarship though.

21 are academic seniors with one year of eligibility left (all but Colby Parkinson, who is an academic junior with a year left).  Two (Peek and Powell) have entered the portal.

Academic seniors with eligibility remaining (excluding transfer portalites):
KJ Costello*
Jack Richardson†
Trevor Speights†
Dorian Maddox†
Scooter Harrington
Donald Stewart†
Devery Hamilton*
Henry Hattis*
Michael Williams*
Jovan Swann*
Thomas Schaffer
Jordan Fox*
Curtis Robinson*
Andrew Pryts*
Obi Eboh*
Treyjohn Butler†
Malik Antoine*
JJ Parson†

Guys with a * have started or are current starters.
Guys with a † I would think have little chance to have substantial playing time, but that's subjective.  You can make an argument that some of the guys with a * should also have a †.

BC

Among the rising academic seniors, that's a really strong class.  I think most are either starters or significant contributors.  Looking at the roster, I think only Ryan Johnson, and Noah Williams are unlikely to see much playing time unless injuries or early departures open up those positions.

BC

Thanks. Seems like quite a few with little or no chance of seeing a decent amount of playing time. Are our commitments to the scholarship athletes for four or five years? I'd imagine if we ask them to redshirt it'd be for five. Is there any appropriate way to say, hey, it doesn't look like you'll be playing next year and we need the scholarship space, then help them financially in a graduate program and not have them part of the football program?

Four, with a fifth-year option. We do “encourage” the non-productive seniors to move on every season. If we didn’t, our scholarship situation/depth would be even worse than it already is. Expect more transfer portal action; we need attrition to make space for the ‘20 class.

My point is that if slide's post reflects the staff's thinking, Peek will be buried in the depth chart even if Williams and Swann leave.  Thus, you should not draw any conclusions about the fact that he entered the portal; he was unlikely to play no matter what.

Peek was a healthy scratch several games. I don't imagine that he would be back even without transfer.

RE: recruiting seniors - OutsiderFan - 12-04-2019

While Peek may have been a scratch for several games, if you don't have Swann, Williams, and Schaffer, you almost can't even field a team.

Booker, DWP, Johnson, Pakola, Phillips, Boles would be the only DL not he roster; one True Frosh, a RS Frosh, a walk-on, and three RS Juniors. Peek may not be good, but he has a big body.

IOW, it makes a lot more sense for him to leave in the interest of playing football, if Swann, Williams, and Schaffer all return. He would have zero chance to play if they all came back.  He might have a slim chance if they didn't.

Whatever the case, all this is to say Stanford's DL would actually be in pretty good shape in 2020 if Shaw can successfully recruit the Seniors to return for a 5th year.

RE: recruiting seniors - SamuelMcF - 12-04-2019

Speaking of transfers that we offered in HS, Arizona S Chacho Ulloa just announced that he's grad transferring. I think he actually wanted to commit to us but was a casualty of door #1.

Not much of a contributor (18 career tackles) but was Pac-12 All Academic 2nd team last season. (All Academic team hasn't come out for this season yet, but based on last year's timing it should be any day now.) And lord knows we need the depth/competition.

RE: recruiting seniors - BostonCard - 12-04-2019

Bo Peek has fewer career tackles than freshman wide receiver Elijah Higgins.

I meant to convey Peek would be the very last in line I'd ask to return for a 5th year.  I had him buried behind a guy not even on campus yet (and played only 1 less play than Peek).

I wish Peek (and reunited with his Bloom?) well in the future.

RE: recruiting seniors - CardinalSagehen - 12-04-2019

Most people already assume KJ is moving on. Shaw’s comments seem to have left the door open, but you get a good feel for what Scarlett thinks is going to happen from his comments after Saturday’s game. He’d probably know, right?

Good find Sagehen. Also calls out the freshmen running backs which might provide some insight into the academic seniors.

I would not ask back those who simply can't play. And there are quite a few on your list BC.

RE: recruiting seniors - BobK - 12-04-2019

Rest easy Phogge a number won’t be asked back. We need the room

What's truly sad, is that you have to label your post "sarcasm". . . .

WTF? This is not good.

Has a Stanford player ever entered the portal, but stayed and played the next year?

RE: recruiting seniors - donkey687 - 12-05-2019

As a data point, last year Scarllett, Beecher and Toohill all took part in Senior Day activities and returned for a fifth year. I hope the same applies to Swann and Pryts and less likely Williams now that he is in the transfer portal.

RE: recruiting seniors - Spiny_Norman - 12-05-2019

When is the football awards luncheon/dinner? Anyone planning to attend? We might learn more afterward about the plans for some players.

Absolutely. According to Coach Shaw "we have depth for these kinds of situations" and "our recruiting has been excellent" (both a direct quotes)
