I think this is UNC's biggest advantage in the game. It's how they won the overtime College Cup game against us a few years ago: Dorrance rested his front line for the last ten minutes of regulation, gambling/depending on his defense to get them to overtime. Ratcliffe kept his in. UNC's better legs in overtime ended up winning it for them. If the game is close and we can't rest our starters much, this will increasingly favor UNC as the game goes on and especially if it goes into OT.

Watched the second half of WSU-UNC at Avaya last night... WSU was still getting plenty of opportunities and was just not being very efficient at all converting them into goals... I didn’t really see UNC doing anything out of the ordinary to cause that.  If we’re in a similar situation on Sunday, I like our chances.

Both UNC and UCLA use a 3-5-2 formation. This gives them a stronger midfield presence. But in each of Smith’s three goals, you can see how the three-player back line was too narrow when Smith came down wide on the right flank. There was no defender available to challenge her until she had control of the ball and had built up a full head of steam — too late.

In my case, avoiding standing in the rain for a couple of hours is wise, not wimpy.

I'm debating the Sunday choice.  I would have been in Stockton for the semis but there were no tickets available and the UoP site showed few seats at all so I figured there'd be no room..  But it looks like they put in extra bleachers, and some standing room.  In the rain, for the non-home team game, there were some empty seats.   It seems USC had a good contingent today, but I guess they'll be fewer Sunday.  But.... UoP actually wound up beating someone from their conference (they lost both games of their conf. tourney!) so they might have a crowd.

It kinda depends on the weather.  If the weather is iffy, I might choose soccer.

Interesting that North Carolina is changing to a 4-4-2 for this game instead of their usual preferred 3-5-2.

Kickoff. Let's go Cardinal!

UNC has strong ball control skills and footwork. But Cardinal
with more offense so far, with the shot advantage 4-0.

Just tuned in for about 7-8 mins in the first half of a scoreless tie, we have 4 shots on goal to their none but all but about 10 seconds of what I saw was in the last defensive third of our side of the field. UNC appears to have better ball handling skills and seems very adept at putting pressure on us.

I’m a total amateur watching this sport, but UNC appears to be dominating us the past 6-7 minutes.

Scoreless at the half. Feels like this has been a matchup of tactics versus pure talent
so far. Honestly, UNC has seemed like the better tactical side, and that Stanford
has relied more on individual talent and a free-flowing game to generate
chances. Stanford reminds me of how historically the Brazilian national team
has played.

I'm awaiting VG's expert analysis.  But it sure seems like the game has been more North Carolina's style.  We don't have those long, flowing possessions we are famous for.  NC seems very good at breaking them up, getting in the way of our passes, and turning the game into something choppy.  In fact, they seem to have longer possessions than we do.

Sometimes our passing has looked a bit off, not as precise as it needs to be.  Is this us or them?

Fair to say that the longer this lasts the better things look for UNC for reasons stated above?

Yeah, I don't have a great feeling about how things are going.

Also, are UNC going to get called for a foul? This is ridiculous the number
of physical challenges they have gotten away with with no call.

I’m so nervous. Go, Cardinal!

RE: Anyone going to Women’s Soccer College Cup? - 81alum - 12-08-2019

Gonzaga WBB
Clemson MSOC
USC MWP
North Carolina WSOC

On to overtime.  I don't think we have had enough cardiac conclusions lately.  Why not another one?

My heard can’t handle this!!!!!

RE: Anyone going to Women’s Soccer College Cup? - 81alum - 12-08-2019

2nd overtime coming up.

At this point I am hoping for penalty kicks.  North Carolina seems deeper and our best players are looking a little tired.  I think the advantage has switched to NC on the field.  Macario hardly touched the ball in the 1st overtime.

RE: Anyone going to Women’s Soccer College Cup? - BostonCard - 12-08-2019

Is it golden goal?

RE: Anyone going to Women’s Soccer College Cup? - 81alum - 12-08-2019

It was, and we had loads of opportunities and never converted.  We hit the crossbar at the very end.

Now penalty kicks.

After we played a great 2nd overtime with lots of opportunities, I am beginning to regret my wish.   But it is what it is.  Now if we could only have Macario take ALL the kicks.
