KJ after the game. “SEC, it means more.” No kidding.

Good for KJ!

His final line:
36/60, 623 yards, 10.4 YPA, 5 TD, 2 INT

Against the #6 team in the country.  LSU may have lost a lot compared to last year, but they are still a top tier SEC team.

Is anyone surprised? Costello is by far the best pedigree QB Leach has ever had as a head coach. Setting the all-time SEC passing yards record and 11th most in NCAA history was surprising, but not how he fit right in to the Leach offense.

Transferring is going to end up making KJ a lot of money. He wasn’t going to be a top NFL prospect with Stanford’s weakening team. Now he has proven what he can do in a West Coast scheme and what he can do in a wide open one.

Even with the LSU defense depleted, that was a damn impressive performance and quite a fun game. Way more entertaining than any game I have seen Stanford play lately. Just compare KJ’s opener against Northwestern last year to the opener at LSU today. What team would you rather play on as a QB? I know what I’d rather watch as a fan.

That was Neuheisel, wasn’t it?

RE: K.J. and the Pirate - BostonCard - 09-26-2020

If he makes it through the season in one piece.  HE dropped back 65 types in the game, and in addition to a sore arm, he did get sacked 5 times for -38 yards.

Great, great interview after the game as well. Smart guy, well spoken. Got in a few digs: praised the intensity of Leach, and dropped the SEC tag line: "it just means more".

Always loved his fire. His game looked good, a couple of questionable throws, but, an SEC record for passing yards and a win in Death Valley in his debut. Congrats KJ.

Too early for a fire Shawvita thread?

You don't think a creative OC with the keys to actually calling the offense would be an improvement? Think KJ made a pretty definitive statement today, both with his performance and his postgame chat. . . .

RE: K.J. and the Pirate - old spanish trail - 09-26-2020

He was just great. Two fumbles like we are used to seeing; always wondered if his hands were smaller than most. But, wow, most yards in SEC history. Maybe, just maybe, it means Pac defenses are better than folks think. Anyway, I'm really happy for him. He played hurt and didn't want to come out.

He was excellent on the mid level crossing patterns that we have called for over last several years. Looks like he could have completed them. :)

It will be an improvement but can we even get them? The vast majority of good coaches don't actually want to be at Stanford.

KJ can ball. Really fun to watch him in a Leach offense.

I guess we knew that was coming.

Heard that too. He looks like a different player. Also, through less than three quarters, he's thrown for more yards against LSU than anyone. Ever.

Breaking news.

Davis Mills, Jack West, and Tanner McKee have entered the portal.

RE: K.J. and the Pirate - Farm93 - 09-26-2020

It was a good day for the Pirate, even though his team almost Bull-dogged It.   Trust that will happen at some point in the season.

Great day for Costello.   Good for him.   As a grad transfer, I have no problem with him helping any team.   Better if a grad transfer takes down an SEC dream team, so thank you KJ!

With LSU and Oklahoma losing today, the Pac-12's chances of CFP participation got a lot better.    The Pac-12 champ will need to be 7-0 to have a chance, but at least the theoretical path to the CFP for the Pac-12 is a bit easier tonight.

Well...there are two more teams in the $EC and the Big 10 than the Pac-12, which I think accounts for some of the difference. And, after watching today's contest....yes, please, do tell me all about the $EC defenses.

RE: K.J. and the Pirate - Maple Leaf - 09-26-2020

After watching the game Shaw is happy for KJ, happy for Mike Leach, happy that he does not have to face Mike Leach in anymore Pac-12 games, but is worried about having to face Mike Leach in the National Championship Game.

On a side note it seems that Mike Leach's Defensive Coordinator who now has the same position at Oklahoma is not having the same degree of success at least against K State.  It could not have been that he has less talent to work with?

USC is really coming down hard on themselves for not getting Mike Leach as their head coach, I guess they were too focus on their Hollywood Sailing Team not to give Leach consideration.

KJ expanded on what he means by saying that in an Athletic article from prior to this game. To paraphrase what I got from his comments, SEC players he's been meeting are really focused on football, expecting pro football to be their career and their way to move upward in life. Also apparently the team goes really hard in practice under Leach.

I don't see it as a dig against Stanford or the Pac-12. Many Stanford guys have pro football hopes, but even those that do aren't all about football all the time, or they would have gone somewhere where the academics aren't so demanding. And there's obviously a tradeoff on how intense practice is; you may improve more, but you may also risk injury more.

The funniest line I've read in a long time. Thanks for the laugh!

RE: K.J. and the Pirate - PersonalLegend - 09-27-2020

You guys are so nice.

KJ under Leach becomes a top 20 nfl pick after being on the bench at Stanford under Shaw and Tavita.

The idiocy of assigning that to anything other than coaching (to include scheme) is just that... idiocy.

I’m happy for the guy. He gets a stanford degree, gets to play under a coaching (well, offensive) legend, and is now on the radar as a potential first round pick. All he has to do is run the 4-5 plays in the air raid offense for the rest of this year and he will make a lot of money. MSU has enough around him to protect him.

Yes, Stanford looks bad, but only for now. Leach is a very special coach. Tavita and Shaw are not in any way special offensive coaches. Just ask KJ.
