I hope Sam is correct about the injured ILB's. Perhaps if they stayed healthy they could have corralled Garbers instead of waving goodbye to him as he was keeping for first down after first down. Take that away and Stanford keeps the Axe.

I think the retirement of Randy Hart has hurt most of all. Akina can't do much if there is no pass rush and his safeties can't tackle in space. Technique or talent? Maybe both.

Containment is on the OLBs, and I blame Lance/Hansen for never once QB spying Garbers with Robinson. We struggled with QBs who could even so much as walk past the LOS.

Also, the reason we lost the game is because Jonathan McGill got torched twice by a faster senior WR. That was it. Both of Cal's 2H TDs. (And if it wasn't him, it would've been JJ Parson, who I keyed in on live and laughed at how sad it was.)

Agreed. Reynolds is swiftly climbing my sh**-list ladder. We're seeing now that he can't recruit either.

When Shaw became the head coach the coaching strength of the defensive came from Hart, Mason and current Defensive Coordinator Lance Anderson, in addition to strong support from the inside linebacker coach who left with Mason for Vandy.

Hart and Mason got maximum production out of the talent they had to work with, they reminded me of John Ralston's staff and their collective ability to get max performance out of the players.

Anderson has done a very good job based upon the personnel challenges that he has been faced with.  If he had a strong and deep D line that would take care of all sorts of challenges, and give Anderson flexibility that could allow for a more attacking D mind set.

Anderson is (or was) the recruiting leader for the staff. He may be doing a decent job with the talent he has in terms of development, game-planning, and playcalling, but he's also on the hook for the lower quality coming in the door.

Sam, obviously nobody spied on Garbers. If your OLB’s can’t do it do you just give up? BS. Assign a guy who can. He kept Cal in the game with his third down scrambles. Otherwise Stanford wins.
