RE: 2020 Stanford at Oregon Prediction Thread - Papa John - 11-02-2020

Right, BobK, that's from October 28. But today, November 2, Coach Cristobal said he wasn't naming a starter. Chaos reigns in Duckland!

Anthony Brown played 2017-2019 for BC. His career stats:
Passing
373 completions in 680 attempts or 54.9%, 4738 yards at 7 yds/pass. 40 TDs, 20 INTs.

Rushing
423 yds in 129 attempts or 3.3 yds/attempt, but he was sacked 28 times.

He also caught 3 TD passes in his BC career. Also note, that AB suffered season-ending knee injuries in 2017 and 2019. He's had tough luck and I wish him well, just not on Saturday (if he plays).

When he did play, his numbers looked OK. Look like Keller Chryst's maybe?

I just now realized that it says "shame!" at the top of this page (for the most lopsided Stanford loss prediction I am guessing). I've always thought it was "shamel" (with an l) and I figured that was just an inside joke that I knew nothing about.

Anyway, not sure if anyone said this but the election and any ensuing social unrest could have an impact on a team where significant numbers of starters / players are tuned into current events, particularly if they have a focus on social justice. I'm thinking more hours doomscrolling on social media instead of watching film, and losing sleep. I imagine Stanford would lose out on that.

RE: 2020 Stanford at Oregon Prediction Thread - winflop - 11-03-2020

Current forecast for Saturday in Eugene - 40% chance of rain, high 50F, low 36F.

So the field will likely be wet even if it's not raining, and temps in the 40s.

My living room forecast is slightly better - 0% chance of rain, high 68F, low 66F.

RE: 2020 Stanford at Oregon Prediction Thread - Papa John - 11-03-2020

Important info, winflop. I would also note that my weather app has Eugene winds out of the WSW at 6 mph during the day and out of the W at 4 mph at night. So pretty calm winds. Perhaps the former football players on this board could comment on which affects play more: rain showers/wet conditions or wind? I would think wind since Autzen stadium--according to Google maps--is oriented almost due east-west, so teams would alternate playing with and then against the wind.

Stanford, 24-20

I had a hard time predicting the score because Shaw often scores just enough to win. If Oregon had an experienced offense, Stanford might need to gamble and score 45 to win.

The question is, which will be worse, Stanford’s defense (which already will be missing key pieces), or Oregon’s qb with his first start with an all-new line and a question mark at tight end.

If Stanford had Adebo and Kelly and all its linebackers healthy, I see Stanford’s defense eating up a new offense and holding the Ducks to single digits. But I worry Stanford’s young defense will make more mistakes than the Duck’s young offense, enabling the Ducks to score 20 even with all those inexperienced players.

With all of Oregon’s talent, normally I could see a depleted Cardinal in trouble, but, as always, there are 3 phases to the game, and I expect Stanford to have a large advantage in every aspect of specialty teams (kickoff, punt, fgs and returns) in virtually every game. And they will need it.

I agree with a lot of what you say here. It’s interesting to me that the Ducks appear to not be very settled along the offensive line depth chart - lot of “ors” on the starters: https://www.google.ca/amp/s/247sports.com/college/oregon/LongFormArticle/Oregon-Ducks-Football-Depth-Chart-Mario-Cristobal-Tyler-Shough-154097496/Amp/

I know if Stanford’s depth chart for the O line read that way that I would be concerned. I would also note that while the Ducks beat us last year 21-6, it’s not as if the Oregon offense with a veteran O line and Justin Herbert overwhelmed us. They had a grand total of 86 yards rushing, Herbert was sacked four times and had a passer rating of 77.

Totally agree with this. After watching Herbert in his first few pro games, he might just be the best rookie QB in the NFL in 2020. With that said, with "all their weapons", how does Oregon not end up in the national discussion last year? How is it that they only score 21 points against a young and inexperienced Stanford D in 2019? Take away Herbert, his dominant Offensive line, and the enire secondary and what you have is a possible upset in the making this Saturday. I like Cristobal, but until he wins on par with his talent, he is unproven.

Lets go!

RE: 2020 Stanford at Oregon Prediction Thread - oregontim - 11-06-2020

I've been following this closely from up here in Eugene. Lots of duck coverage in the local paper, and I don't get nearly as much info on Stanford, for obvious reasons. I root for both because I have degrees from both, but I live in Eugene, and the ducks have a chance at national championship this year, so ...

I second the general comments about duck weaknesses, including a brand new offensive line, and so many good players gone. But I'm guessing Oregon by two or three touchdowns.

Tyler Shough at quarterback looked good last year when he replaced Herbert and ran the second team. He's been in the program for at least three years, so he knows the offense. And he's 6'5" and mobile. But he's obviously a question. The local media has taken Shough for granted, and has written very little of Brown.

I expect the ducks' game plan will be to look as much like Alabama as Cristobal and his new offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead can manage. They'll want to establish the run first. Although the O-line is all new, they've got some strong new bodies, and Cristobal played o-line so that's a team strength. Expect to see a lot of CJ Verdell. Shough has a better set of receivers than Herbert did last year, but still, he's a new starter. Johnson had a lot of catches last year, and tight ends look good.

Joe Moorhead, the new offensive coordinator, doesn't have instant star power, and his track record doesn't seem that great; but Cristobal is a big fan, so we'll see. I really like Cristobal for what he stands for, but his sense of offense is a lot of power runs. He can be boring, and he can not give up on the run for too long. He doesn't have a history of great in-game adjustments. They would have had a chance at national championship last year if they could have won the second half against Arizona State. They didn't.

On defense, the linebacker crew has some experience and two very strong true freshmen, including Noah Sewell, (younger brother of Penei Sewell), who was generally rated as the best or one of the best in the nation among linebacker recruits. The secondary lost two really good players to the draft, but Lenoir changed his mind and will be strong at one of the corners. There too, the ducks have some very strong recruits.

Cristobal is an excellent recruiter. He's brought in top 10 recruits two of the last three years, and has consistently the best recruiting score in the Pac 12. That will help with a lot of talented new faces.

Wind is a much bigger factor than rain.

I've lived in Eugene for 28 years. Game is likely to have off-and-on light rain, but not much wind. We're at the south end of the Willamette Valley where rain is commonplace from October through June, and wind happens, much strong winds are unusual. Local weather looks like a gray day with a 50% chance of rain. And our rain, this time of year, is likely to be off and on, not steady.

ABC cut away from the Texas game for an hour this morning to discuss the election call.

Biden will be speaking at 8PM EST (5PM PST) tonight. Will ABC cut away for an hour for that?

Michigan and USC both losing 24-14.

Condoms pull it out; Wolverines don't.
More fire Harbaugh drums beating, methinks.

Well, there's been no response from admins here, and the link does not work, so I'll put my prediction here.

Oregon 28
Stanford 31

I actually think Stanford will get beat soundly, but can't predict against them.

Sorry, I don't know how to fix the prediction app. I should have PMed George, though.
