If you want the regular season, we did it last decade with the 2008/2009 team against Washington and Washington State. The Washington win was a ruthless 112-35 win against a team that had a future WNBA Champion on it in Sami Whitcomb. That's impressive.

Thanks. To me, the exhibitions don't count for this, but for regular season, the two against the Washingtons . . . I do recall that now. And I definitely remember that Washington ruthless win. If I recall correctly, much of the 2nd half was played by the bench and they just couldn't miss. Again, my memory is that after the game, Tara apologized or at least said something to the Washington coach (who was it then?), along the lines of, we didn't mean to run up the score but I can't tell the subs not to shoot. Maybe I'm misremembering, but that's my memory.
That Washington game was the first and only game I have ever gotten my daughter to attend with me.  She was about 10 and began to feel so sorry for the Washington girls that she asked searching questions like "Dad,why would this be fun for them?"  and "Can we cheer for Washington now?"  She never went back.

Ros went 4/5 from three point range in that game.  Jayne, Kayla, Jeanette, and Jillian all did their stuff.  It was 62/15 at the half, so we did ease up :P

Some nice ball movement here:

Some other nice plays.  A bunch of "nice defensive play and passing to a streaking Jones for a lay-up"

Let me be clear.  I think see has a fantastic future.  I'm only commenting on what I saw this half.

You don't need to apologize for making the salient observation re: Brink's 1H.  She is very skilled and it's enticing to think how good she will be in a year or two.  Right now, she is physically not that strong - but her skill level is very high.  She plays accordingly.

Her best play today, I thought, was 2H in-bound play where she faked passing ball back to inbounder in the corner and then took it hard baseline for a bucket off the glass.  That was very nice.

Overall, Stanford was pretty sloppy.  Van Gytenbeek didn't have a very good game (but got a lot of PT); Kiana must be in Tara's dog house for some reason (though she didn't play that well either).  Fortunately, this team is soooooo deep that it will take an off game by a lot of players for a even a good team to beat Stanford.  Very good/Top 10 teams is another matter.

Looking forward to tomorrow's game.  Hope all the collegians stay safe and get the game in.

I wouldn't think that Kiana is in Tara's doghouse at all. More likely that she just wasn't needed that much against an overmatched team, Tara wanted to get her freshman point guard some extra minutes, and we need to play another game tomorrow so she wanted to make sure everybody had fresh legs.

RE: WBB: Stanford 101 UNLV 54 - 2006alum - 12-06-2020

Overall, a solid game. I felt like we played a lot more "man offense" trying to take cuts to the basket, which has definitely not been our historical strength or tendency, and I'm not surprised it got a little sloppy at times. (Apart from Jones, who I agree may be the best slashing player we've ever had, and recent shooting guards like McPhee and Carrington, at their peak, were very effective slashers).

I suspect that's also why Williams didn't see as much action - I didn't sense she was in the dog house as much as we just were relying more on our 3-5 players to score inside. Last year we took about 2/5 of our shots from outside and last night we took less than 1/3, and I suspect this was not on accident but was what the coaches wanted our players to focus on. And remember: last season Tara leaned so heavily on Williams that the soles on her shoes were practically run through by the end of conference play. So the more she can take it easy early in the season, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

I thought Brink played like a very talented freshman: a little out of control on offense, in part because she's used to having her way against the opposing team practically at will. She'll settle in. And neither Emma-Nnopu nor Van Gytenbeek were expected to be starter material out of the gate, so I'm fully expectant we will see streakiness from them as frosh.

And I'll say this: Jump's outside shooting seems to be a bit off compared to last season, but she's definitely compensating by being more of a playmaker on offense and dogged defender on defense: she co-led the team with three steals and is definitely looking to take it to the basket in a way she didn't last season. In the long term, she's got to develop those moves to keep defenses honest and to enable Tara to keep her in against good offenses.

To me, the top line conclusion is I'm delighted that Jones looks even better than she did last season before the injury and that Belibi is really establishing herself as a deft post on offense.

Last bright spot: two games in (against admittedly weak competition), Jones is 10:0 assist-to-turnover ratio, Williams is 8:1, and Van Gytenbeek is 7:0. If we've had a weakness in the past, it's been sloppy ballhandling by our offensive creators, so I'm hopeful this is a sign of a more controlled set of point players this year.

Hah. Let me get you some grammarist smelling salts:

Quote:On accident is a variation found almost exclusively inside the United States. It is grammatically on par with the phrase on purpose. One can either do something on purpose or on accident

RE: WBB: Stanford 101 UNLV 54 - BostonCard - 12-06-2020

Hey, we all have grammatical hills we’re willing to die on, and for me, saying “on accident” instead of on by accident (or accidentally if symmetry is important in your life) is one.  The other one is using “less” for countable plurals.

I'll split the difference with you - I prefer (and use) "on accident" only when it's clearly being used as an antonym for "on purpose", but otherwise agree that by accident is the preferable usage. And I hate hate hate when less is used in place of fewer, so I'll join you with my torch and pitchfork on that hill.
