RE: WBB: Stanford 82 Utah 54 - TheFarm07 - 01-15-2021

In this pretty short press conference, Tara was very tight-lipped about Haley. She said at the beginning that Haley was not available and she wasn't going to say anything more about it.

Not too much to glean from her comments, except that she was upbeat and positive about Ashten's game and pleased with our rebounding effort, which would be key to Sunday's game at Colorado.

She had her best game of the year. I hope it's earned her more playing time down the road. IMHO, today she showed she deserves it

Absolutely about Prechtel.  This is what I expected to see from her based on last year.  In the beginning of the season I felt she didn't display much emotion or enthusiasm.  I come to believe that is simply her personality.  She is a low-key type of person.

RE: WBB: Stanford 82 Utah 54 - 81alum - 01-15-2021

What a great game for Prechtel, so good to see Lexie and Williams getting their offense going, Jump is shooting like we know she can, and Van Gytenbeek is showing some poise and hustle.  Turnovers were held very much in check.  In short, we got everything we could possible want out of this game.

The one concern, of course, is Jones.  I will hold my breath.

Think you have the PAC-12 figured out?

After three quarters USC leading WSU.

And USC now up by 10 with 3 min left. Nope, can't figure out Pac 12 -- as someone said earlier, a brutal conference.

More other pac 12: von Oelhoffen enrolled early at Ore St.

RE: WBB: Stanford 82 Utah 54 - martyup - 01-15-2021

And USC takes down the Cougs in OT, after blowing a 10 point lead with 3 minutes to play in regulation. Wazzu's best player stole the inbound pass with 5 seconds to go and raced down the court for the winning bucket but couldn't put it in the hoop. Turns out the Cougs are human.

RE: WBB: Stanford 82 Utah 54 - BobK - 01-15-2021

USC got back Pili all conference last season and top recruit Jenkins. Pili limited still those too make USC a different team

Cal adds 2021 recruit Mia Mastriv

Just watch the presser. At the end, Tara made a comment about how great it was to have "all 12 practicing," in other words, Haley must have been practicing. Suggests it isn't an injury issue, or else something that happened in practice. So??? Still a mystery.

Haley was naughty. There

Glad to hear it wasn’t an injury, and hopefully it was a one of thing. She seems like a great kid, so I’m expecting it will have been.

Tara speak. Thus my interpretation

Glad it happened against UT.

"Hogswallow!"

So what you're saying is that the number one recruit in the nation, who had her freshman year cut short by an injury, who rehabbed all summer, who is now one of the best players in the country, intentionally threw away one or more games in her career, so that she could go and do something "naughty".......

There is nothing about that that makes any sense.  At all.

A far more plausible explanation:  Early in the Oregon game she drove the lane and stepped on the foot of a defender and went down awkwardly.  She stayed on the floor for an extra moment to take 'inventory' and then got up.  On a replay you can see her turn her ankle.  That she was held out for precautionary reasons against a team like Utah because she was experiencing some soreness makes more sense.

Agreed. Tara not saying anything is more consistent with an injury, too. Remember that she could say practically nothing about Haley's knee injury last year. Stanford seems to be very careful about not releasing any player health information without the player's/family's permission.

It's not what you say, it's what you don't say.

No "Day to day."  No "We hope to have her back next game/week".  No "We're not sure about the situation".  No "We'll know more after the doctors see her"

Besides, I expect BobK knows exactly what transpired and wisely doesn't reveal it.

This wreaks of a disciplinary benching.  Such a benching shouldn't damage a good relation between coach & mature team member.  It should benefit the team because it shows a potential All-American and high draft pick has to abide by the same rules.

The fact that Tara says nothing more about it also is a good sign.  No public airing of behavior that the player may regret.  No statement by the coach that might unnecessarily irritate the player.

The fact that she sat the whole game suggests that the infraction was mildly serious or was a repeated lesser issue.  Yet it wasn't up to driving a golf cart while drunk.

A concern I have is what if the triggering event(s) is repeated.  I suppose Tara can repeat the benching rather than raising the punishment.

If Haley chooses to say something such as "I did X [or, "broke team rules"] and I was justifiably benched", that's a good sign.  If she doesn't choose to say so, I'll respect that as being neutral.

For all we know, she went out without her mask on, or something like that.  Not disrespectful, but potentially damaging to her & thus the team.

RE: WBB: Stanford 82 Utah 54 - 2006alum - 01-16-2021

Yes, I'd imagine there are about 10 ways to inadvertently break the COVID-19 rules, and given how dire the consequences could be for having a brobdingnagian swath of the team have to sit out for protocols, I could see something seemingly minor be worthy of a one game benching.
