RE: WBB: Stanford 74 Washington 48 - M T - 01-31-2021

The scorer, at least for the live stats, did not credit us with all our blocks.
4Q 3:00  Agnes blocks a shot
4Q 1:47  Agnes blocks a shot
1Q 4:10  Lexie blocks a shot

Add those 3 (at least, I didn't check but the 1st Q and most of the 4th) to the 9 recorded blocks, and we'd have had 12, tied for 3rd most for Stanford behind two games with 13.

The starters played a clean game:  nine assists, three turnovers.
Alas, the others: two assists, 11 turnovers.
The bench players aren't accustomed to playing as a unit and it showed.
But a very decisive win under odd circumstances,
as you suggested.  I think the guys just want to get home.

For what it's worth, our top scorer (Jump) and top rebounder (Prechtel) both came off the bench.

So all the Stanford teams that came back to start their seasons had to quarantine. However the most recent was the 23rd. Do the Men and Women returning have to quarantine?

RE: WBB: Stanford 74 Washington 48 - M T - 01-31-2021

Looking at the schedule ahead:
Mountain schools @Stanford next week  Feb 5&7
   Oregon schools away Feb 12&15
   Arizona schools @Stanford Feb 19&22
   Cal @Stanford Feb 28
   Pac-12 tourney Mar 4-7

There will be challenges.

I hope that the players will not take being back at Stanford as a opportunity to socialize or engage in other activities that may increase their chances of getting COVID.  Getting a couple of starters out with COVID now will definitely hurt our chances of a high seed at the NCAA tournament.

Not sure.  I think the answer is that yes, technically they have to quarantine away from other Santa Clara county residents, but they can leave quarantine for practices and games in their sport. Regardless if that's correct, I am pretty sure they will not have to miss games or practices after they get back.

Colorado's Jaylyn Sherrod just had hip surgery this past week and will miss the remainder of the season

I agree with all this.  Playing the devil's advocate; much of the time Stanford was up against what you might describe as a non-scholarship Division II team.   I would expect domination from start to finish of the game and that didn't really happen.

I'm willing to give the team a two week grace period back on the farm and then will expect more consistent play.

My theory is that one consequence of Tara's current approach to recruiting
is you end up with great kids with a strong team orientation.
You do not end up with, however, Diana Taurasis: killers.

And same with, based on my listening, to this new group coming in:
Demetre, Iriafen, Bosgana and Harriel--
great kids, team players.

So I wasn't surprised to see us take our feet off the Huskies' necks this afternoon,
any more than I was surprised that UConn felt it necessary today to get the 100th point
against a clearly outmatched DePaul team.

I also think Tara wanted to get our whole team involved today,
and reward each player for enduring what they have for the last two months.

"Sometimes you get the big lead and for some reason can't keep our focus as well as we needed to."  Praise for Jump and others, praise for the defense.  "A chance to let a lot of people play."

Asked about returning home, she said "Kianna was in tears" since she was not sure she was going to play another game in Maples.  I think that is confirmation that Williams is not going to come back for a fifth year--as unlikely as that possibility might have been.  "Quite honestly we are pretty tired."

Asked by Jake about Jump's progress in practice, Tara said "we have hardly been practicing."  We should all listen to that statement, since it is not a facetious one.  What this team has accomplished, especially with freshmen, given no summer practice and little practice between games, is amazing.  However the season turns out, this may be Tara's finest year of coaching.

"I'm not going to get married to that starting lineup....That big position is really open." And then mentioned Cam, Ashton, and Fran.  She sounds settled on the other four starters.  "Cam has been playing well for us.  I don't think today was a great day for her....It is great when we have 3 people we can rotate in that position."

Tara also mentioned that she has been able to go home "less than 10 days" since November, but a lot of the players and coaches have not.  I take it that is because she lives in San Mateo County?  Just a guess on my part.
