RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - Spiny_Norman - 05-24-2021

Stanford is advancing as the top seed. They have given up nearly half of their lead, but they still are ahead of Duke by 11 shots with only 2 holes remaining.

Drama #1 is for the individual title. Heck leads Emma Spitz from UCLA by one shot with 2 to play.

Drama #2 is for the 8th spot. Wake Forest was comfortably at #5 until one of their players put up a quadruple bogey-bogey on her 13th and 14th holes. They currently lead ASU by one shot for 8th. Stanford will face whichever team finishes in 8th. The other half of Stanford's bracket is set - Ole Miss vs. Texas.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - oldalum - 05-24-2021

I hope Wake Forest doesn't overtake Auburn for the #7 position: Auburn's -10 today is currently 19 shots better than us today. They are hot!

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - terry - 05-24-2021

Congrats to Rachel Heck, the 2021 NCAA Champion!

She parred her last 6 holes to keep her 1-stroke lead. Well done!

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - ColoradoTree - 05-24-2021

What a wild finish! Wake is now on the outside looking in by a few strokes, Arizona just dropped to T8th with LSU, with FSU just one stroke behind, before a couple of birdies gets Arizona back into 7th at +20, pushing ASU into 8th alone at +21, with FSU one stroke behind ASU and Wake five back of ASU and needing a miracle.

Heck holds on by a stroke with a par-par finish, and she's your national medalist and individual NCAA champion!

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - winflop - 05-24-2021

MEGA-CONGRATULATIONS TO RACHEL HECK, the FIRST Stanford woman to win the individual title and the ninth freshman to win it.

I believe this is her fifth consecutive individual tournament win.

Overall the team did not play well today, finishing at +8 well off the pace of several other teams. Auburn's -10 was as good as any of Stanford's rounds and got them into the match play.

Almost done for the day, with two of Arizona, Arizona St, and Florida St making the cut for the match play. One of those three teams will be Stanford's quarterfinal opponent tomorrow.

Quarters and semis tomorrow, finals on Wednesday. GO CARDINAL!

Way to hang on Heck.  In future years the only thing fans will recall is who won in 2021, not by how many strokes.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - Spiny_Norman - 05-24-2021

No coach in the country has the experience of Anne Walker in selecting match ups for match play. She knows her team and how they each respond to pressure. Who should lead off? Who should be the anchor?

Schedule for tonight and tomorrow.

Monday, May 24
7:25 p.m. – Quarterfinal match play pairings determined

Tuesday, May 25
6:20 a.m. – Quarterfinal - Match #1 and #2 begin (1st and 10th tees)
7:10 a.m. – Quarterfinal - Match #3 and #4 begin (1st and 10th tees)
12:45 p.m. – Semifinal - Match #5 begins (winners of match #1 and #2)
1:35 p.m. – Semifinal - Match #6 begins (winners of match #3 and #4)

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - BostonCard - 05-24-2021

Looks like Arizona and ASU will go to a playoff; we play the winner tomorrow.

That job is considerably easier when you have the #1 and #3 players from match play on your team (the top 2 players to make it onto match play).

When you have the advantage at every position, it probably makes sense to try to play it straight, no?  You figure that Heck and Ye would be strong favorites against anyone they play.

I agree but the ideal for Arizona may be to prefer a reverse order lineup and hope they win the #3 match (along with the two involving their two best players). It's not fully under Walker's control. Arizona should be able to throw away one match with a worse player against one of our two best, shouldn't they? And further complicating things is that the stroke play and match play strengths of an individual player may differ. I assume the coaches have all this doped out ahead of time, so no matter who Arizona throws up there we have our path planned.

The Arizona coach is probably pretty good at this too: in 2018 she took Arizona from the 8-seed in match play to win the championship, defeating us in the semis along the way.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - Spiny_Norman - 05-24-2021

Match ups are set.

Stanford begins at 7:10 am pacific.

1. Ye vs. Starkute
2. Englemann vs. V. Hou
3. Seay vs. Chang
4. Krauter vs. Y. Hou
5. Heck vs. Warner

Lead off and anchor are the 2 best players. Frosh Englemann who has struggled (only 3 birdies in the final 3 rounds) is in the 2nd spot which may relieve a little pressure.

Btw, don't look at the stroke play results and use that as a predictor of match play success. Match play is a different animal.

This is it! This is what the team has worked all season for - to qualify for match play and have a chance to win it all. Let's go, Stanford!! Let's hope for a long and successful day tomorrow.

What's the tiebreaker that determined #7 vs #8 seed?

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - Madera86 - 05-24-2021

Congrats to Rachel Heck! And Go Cardinal!

I think it's the total of the non-counting score in each round, which for Arizona was 29 and ASU 22.

Interesting! I guess it's not really "non-counting" after all.

I heard that it's the total of all 5 scores for all 4 days which is pretty much the same as what you said, Oldalum.

Jamesy, if there had been a tie for 8th place, that would have been played off on the course. All 5 players from both teams play the same hole, compare total scores. Repeat until there is a winner.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - Hulk01 - 05-24-2021

Heck is only the third player in NCAA history to win a conference, regional, and national championship in the same year.
And her 69.71 for the season is an NCAA record.

If they had played today (keeping in mind that the strategy in match play would have been different):

Ye (2) and Starkute (5) would have been all square after 18
Englemann (3) would lost to Hou (2) 2 and 1.
Seay (4) would have beaten Chang (3) 1-up.
Krauter (5) and Hou (1) would have been all square after 18
Heck (1) and Warner (4) would have been all square after 18

So, today we would have headed to extra holes in three of the matches.  I haven't looked, but I suspect that on any other day we would have won going away.  Doing what you said not to do, Ye ended up 12 strokes ahead of Starkute for the tournament; Engleman ended up 5 strokes ahead of Hou in the tournament; Seay ended up 10 strokes ahead of Chang for the tournament; Krauter ended up 1 stroke behind Hou; and Heck wound up 20 strokes ahead of Warner.

I think if you are Arizona, you like how the match-up turned up.

I think you're nuts. Nobody wants us as an opponent.

I expect us to play it straight. Would potentially mess with players' minds to change the lineup at this point. Besides, it's a little bit of a "come at me bro" statement
